Waterside art group is a diverse gathering of local artists who all appreciate the opportunity to meet together to paint and draw and to share and learn skills and knowledge .

Join us for a Plein Air Painting Session on Sunday 14th June 2pm at Prospect Place in Hythe (or we will go to The Boathouse if the weather is bad)

It’s a good location as there is plenty to paint or draw: the row of quaint houses, the tidal estuary with ships and ferries coming and going, the marina, the historic pier and, most probably, a seagull or two. The Group welcomes non-members as well as members and it’s free of charge. Just bring your art materials, and don’t forget a portable chair. (If you haven't got a chair, please ask as I have a couple spare)

Brilliant results from our 'Back to Basics' Drawing Workshop today tutored by John Edwards. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were drawing with charcoal and learning about tone and value. We ceated a landscape first, putting down the values in charcoal first, then we added watercolour over the top then went back in with charcoal to enhance the values further. Then we practiced drawing quick portraits with the aim to capture the character with simple lines and not get bogged down in the details.

A Date For Your Diaries: Art Demonstration Portraiture with Ronnie Ireland. Tuesday 21st April, 7pm, £5. Members and non-members welcome.

Professional artist and teacher Ronnie Ireland will give a brief talk on the theory of portraiture and show us his approaches to creating a self-portrait.

Waterside Art Group invites members and non-members to bring one of their paintings or drawings to be reviewed by professional artist and tutor John Edwards on Tuesday 17 March at Hythe & Dibden Community Centre, starting at 7.30pm.

John will look at each attendee’s painting or drawing in turn, offering a perspective on the various elements within it. John is an excellent teacher with a huge body of knowledge of art history and techniques, so this is a valuable chance to learn from him and to talk about art. It’s good fun, too! Even if attendees don’t want to bring a picture, they can listen, learn and enjoy a sociable evening. The photo below is from last year’s event.

John will look at each attendee’s artwork in turn, offering a perspective on the various elements within it. John is an excellent teacher with a huge body of knowledge of art history and techniques, so this is a valuable chance to learn from him and to talk about art. It’s good fun, too! New year, new hobby? Why not try Waterside Art Group!
Waterside Art Group starts its new term for 2026 on Tuesday 13 January, 7pm to 9pm, at Hythe and Dibden Community Centre. Open to all abilities, the Group meets weekly and welcomes anyone who enjoys making art, or who wants to try a new pastime and explore their artistic potential. As well as regular meetings, the Group organises occasional demonstration evenings and workshops. The most recent of these was a soft pastels workshop last November (photo)
