🐝 A Strange One for a Sunday Afternoon

Got a call from a couple just down the road who said bees had moved into their window. Not something you hear every day.

After a quick chat we headed over and, sure enough, a swarm had settled right on the window frame. First time we’ve seen bees choose a spot like that — but these girls were simply settling in for the night.

Before they became a nuisance for anyone else, we carefully popped them into a collection box. They’ll stay safely contained overnight, and we’ll collect and rehome them tomorrow so they can continue doing what they do best.

If you spot unusual bee activity around your home, early action always makes things easier — for you and the bees. Advice is always free.

Seen some bee activity and not sure what to do?
Most of the time, a swarm in the garden is nothing to panic about — they’re usually just passing through.
But when bees start moving into a roof, chimney or wall cavity, that’s a different story. Left too long, it becomes a much bigger (and more expensive) problem to deal with.
A quick call early on can save you a lot of hassle later.
👇 Give us a ring and we’ll help you figure out what you’re dealing with.

It’s been an exceptionally busy week here at Lakeside Bee Services.
100 people have contacted us with bee issues from swarms in gardens to bumblebees settling in roof spaces. Every enquiry gets a response. If someone can resolve the issue safely themselves, we guide them. If not, we signpost. And when specialist removal is required, we arrange a survey so we can quote accurately.

Bee removal is highly specialised work. It often involves scaffolding, building access, and careful extraction to protect both the property and the bees. Every job is different but the level of care is always the same. Our service is consistently 5‑star, whether we’re helping a homeowner or a commercial client.

We’re fully insured up to £10 million, which allows us to support commercial companies, estate agents, landlords, construction firms and domestic properties across the New Forest and South Coast.

This year we’ve expanded our team and taken on a unit so we can help even more people. Demand is rising fast, and we’re scaling responsibly to meet it.

A quick insight from the field:
Acting early makes a huge difference. A swarm removed within three weeks might only require 5–10 bricks to be taken out. One call this week involved bees that had been in a chimney for years — the colony was three metres down the flue. That’s a completely different scale of work and cost.

If you’re interested in ethical bee removal, real‑world problem‑solving, and the realities of managing bees in buildings, feel free to connect or follow. Swarm season is here, and we’re working hard to support as many people as possible while protecting the bees.

🐝 A Tough Start, but a Good Ending in the Cotswolds

Today we were called out to an old colony that had set up home deep inside a Cotswold stone chimney. Sadly, the bees hadn’t survived the winter, so the job became a careful recovery of the old honeycomb and a chance to make the chimney safe for the future.

What made things trickier was discovering that previous repairs had been done in cement rather than lime mortar. Cement and historic stone don’t mix well, and as we worked, one of the stones fractured — something that shouldn’t have happened and definitely added a bit of unnecessary stress to the day.

But this is where the story turns around.

A huge thank you to Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry Ltd, who absolutely saved the day. We rang ahead, explained the situation, and by the time we’d driven over, they had already cut a perfectly matched replacement block for us. Their speed, skill, and willingness to help made all the difference.

With the old honeycomb removed and the chimney properly sealed to prevent any future swarms from moving in, the job ended on a positive note.

Grateful for good people, good craftsmanship, and a good outcome. 🐝💛

A small but densely packed colony we dealt with today in the heart of the New Forest 🌿

Despite its size, this hive was full of activity and already showing clear signs of preparing to swarm — something that can quickly lead to multiple colonies spreading into nearby areas.

We carried out a careful removal, preserving the bees and relocating them to a more suitable environment where they can continue to thrive without causing issues for the property.

A great result in a stunning location, and another swarm prevented before it became a bigger problem.

If you notice increased bee activity or suspect a colony is forming, it’s always best to act early.

🌼 Hairy‑Footed Flower Bees Are Back! 🐝

Lots of calls coming in with Hairy‑Footed Flower Bees at the moment (absolutely love that name). These little spring rockets are one of the first bees to get active as the season warms up.

They can look a bit alarming if you’re not expecting them, but they’re harmless solitary bees and brilliant early pollinators.

As the season warms up and the bees are on the move again, just be mindful of where they’re flying in and out. If you start noticing regular activity around brickwork, rooflines, vents, or outbuildings, it’s worth keeping an eye on it. Early in the season is always the easiest time to deal with any unwanted colonies before numbers grow.

If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, feel free to send a photo or give us a call — always happy to help identify what’s buzzing around your garden.

Let’s keep our bees safe and our homes sound.

Subject: Thinking About Bee Removal? Why Autumn is for Planning, Not Panic.

Due to winding down now as the cooler weather sets in were we will start preparing for the winter markets and candle season a little thought popped into my head. We are still receiving calls about bees.

As the seasons change, you might be thinking about that honeybee colony you noticed in your chimney, wall, or roof space over the summer. While the urge to act now is understandable, for the bees' survival, this is precisely the wrong time for a live removal.

Why wait until spring?

In autumn and winter, a honeybee colony is in survival mode. They have stored all their food (honey) and are clustered together to stay warm. Removing them now would almost certainly lead to the colony's demise, as they would have no time to forage and re-establish themselves before the cold weather hits.

So, what should you do now? PLAN!

This is the perfect time to:
✅ Get a professional assessment and survey.
✅ Understand the scope of the work, including any access or building repairs needed.
✅ Receive a detailed, no-obligation quote.
✅ Secure your spot on the schedule for spring, beating the rush!

Acting now means you're prepared for a safe, ethical, and successful bee removal as soon as the weather is right. You protect your property and give the bees the best possible chance to be rehomed and thrive.

If you have a bee colony that needs attention, let's talk. We can put a plan in place today for a solution next spring.

🌞 What a beautiful day exploring the stunning Dorset countryside! Yesterday we were in Hertfordshire, soaking up the scenery—definitely getting our miles in this week! 🚚
We've got an exciting removal planned for this Friday in the local area, and tomorrow we’ll be giving our hives a thorough check-up. It's shaping up to be a busy week for this time of year! 🐝✨ Stay tuned for more updates!

It's a busy day today preparing for the week ahead. Many surveys will be carried out from Lee on Solent to Bath, and, hopefully, an emergency removal from a church in Oxford if the weather is favourable. This has been six months of planning with structural engineers, architects, roofers, scaffolders and ecologists.

Hopefully be bringing on a new technician to the team to assist with this church.

We’ve also been jarring Honey for New Forest Beekeepers Association, which will be available at the shows we have planned for the summer. It is great to use our jarring machine to its full capacity.
