Fostering can sometimes feel like a lonely role – but it doesn't have to be. The Mockingbird programme, run by The Fostering Network, is designed to create a real sense of community among foster carers and the children in their care.

It works by bringing together a small group of foster families into a "constellation", supported by an experienced Hub Home Carer. Think of it a bit like an extended family – people who understand what you're going through, who can offer practical help, and who create a sense of belonging for everyone involved, including the children.

The programme is available to foster carers in Knowsley, and the difference it makes to people's experience of fostering can be really significant.

Many people assume that children living in residential homes are there because they have very complex needs. In reality, a significant number are there simply because there aren't enough foster carers available in their local area.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up in a family home – with the stability, warmth and sense of belonging that brings. And every person who comes forward to foster for their local authority helps make that possible for a child nearby.

What is a foster carer?

It’s someone who makes a significant difference to the lives of children and young people, helping them flourish and achieve their full potential.
It’s someone who loves working with children and wants a rewarding career which really makes a difference to the community where they live.
It’s someone who is patient, willing to listen and learn, and has love to spare.

If that someone could be you, it doesn’t matter whether you already work, have your own family or own your own home. Your marital status, sexuality and age are no barrier to becoming a brilliant foster carer.

One of the things Knowsley foster carers say they value most is knowing they're never on their own.

When you foster with Knowsley Council, you have a dedicated supervising social worker in your corner – someone who knows you, visits you regularly, and is there to celebrate the good moments as well as help you through the difficult ones. You're also part of a wider network that includes the child's social worker, education professionals, health services and more.

There's no agency in the middle. Just direct, local support from people who are invested in you and the child in your care.

You don't have to wait until your children have grown up before you can become a foster carer. Many brilliant foster carers already have children at home – and it works.

When you start your fostering journey, one of the first steps is a home visit from a member of the fostering team. It's natural to feel a little nervous about this – you might worry about being judged, or feel like your home needs to be perfect.

The reality is quite different. The visit isn't an inspection. It's simply a chance for the team to get to know you, understand your household, and talk through any worries you might have. Your home doesn't need to be spotless, and your past doesn't need to be perfect either.

What's it really like growing up in a fostering family?

For children already living at home, the idea of their parents becoming foster carers can raise a lot of questions. But for many families, it becomes one of the best decisions they ever made together.

In Episode 1 of Foster4's podcast series, Let's Chat About Fostering, we meet Nathan, who grew up as a foster sibling. He talks about what it was like when his parents first brought up the idea, the bonds he's formed along the way, and why he now wants to become a foster carer himself one day. His story is a reminder that fostering doesn't just change the life of the child who comes to stay – it can enrich the whole family.
