🎉 Solid Ground is ONE today!

A year ago today, we held our very first Solid Ground meeting.

Solid Ground didn’t start in a community centre, with funding behind us or everything neatly in place. It started in somebody’s living room.

We knew there needed to be somewhere people could come together with others who understood, talk honestly about the things that had shaped them and feel a wee bit less alone in it. So we started with what we had.

For those first couple of months, that living room was Solid Ground. We couldn’t afford to hire a venue, so we met there for free while we worked on getting our first funding in place. At the end of October, that funding finally came through and we were able to move into a community space.

And here we are, a whole year later! 🎂

There have been busy weeks and quiet weeks, new faces and familiar ones, serious conversations, tears, plenty of laughter and an astonishing amount of tea. We’ve learned as we’ve gone, listened to the people who come through the door and gradually worked out what Solid Ground needs to be.

We’ve also spent a lot of this first year working away behind the scenes, training, learning and putting things in place for where we want to take Solid Ground next.

There’s a lot coming in year two, and we’re really excited about where it’s heading. But today, we’re taking a minute to look back at where it started.

Somebody’s living room, no funding and just an idea that we believed was worth trying.

One year later, Solid Ground is still here, and we’re rather proud of that.

Happy first birthday to us. 🎂🥳

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our first year. 💜

💜 Learning, Growing, Supporting 💜

This week, the Solid Ground team completed Wave After Wave, NHS Scotland's su***de bereavement training programme.

For us, this was a natural next step after completing our ASIST training earlier this year. ASIST taught us how to support someone who may be experiencing thoughts of su***de, while Wave After Wave helped us better understand the profound impact that su***de can have on the people left behind.

The training explored grief, loss, trauma, compassion and the ripples that spread through families, friendships and communities after a su***de. It was powerful, emotional and thought-provoking, and gave us plenty to reflect on.

At Solid Ground, we never want to assume we know enough. We are committed to learning, growing and continually developing our understanding so that we can support people with greater knowledge, empathy and compassion.

A huge thank you to the NHS team for creating and delivering such an important programme. We are taking away not only new knowledge, but a deeper appreciation of the courage it takes to keep going after loss and the importance of ensuring nobody has to navigate that journey alone.

Solid Ground is for people who have grown up, or lived with a partner, where things were not stable.

That might have been alcohol, drugs, control, narcissistic behaviour, or abuse.

It leaves a mark. It shows up in how you respond, how you cope, and how you manage relationships and everyday life.

Solid Ground is a peer-to-peer support group for people who are now dealing with the impact of that.

We focus on understanding your own behaviour, your own responses, and the patterns that came from that environment, so you can start to work with them in a different way.

A lot of people have learned to read a room, keep things steady, and carry more than they should.

That does not switch off. It shows up in everyday life, in how you respond, how much you take on, and how hard it can be to step back.

Solid Ground is about understanding those patterns properly, so they stop running everything in the background.

Some people learned early how to read a room, steady others, and keep everything held together.

That way of being often stays, showing up as constant awareness, taking on too much, and finding it hard to step back.

Solid Ground is a space to understand those patterns, where they came from, and how they still shape everyday life.

The focus is simple and practical, so what you take from the room carries with you.

People often come back because something about the space stays with them
It might be a conversation that made sense in a way nothing else has, or just the feeling of having sat for an hour without everything pressing in quite so much.

Whatever it is, it tends to carry on with you after you leave.

Next meeting, 4th May at 730pm
