Himalayan balsam control continues but why is this plant a problem?

Fast‑growing invasive annual that out competes native plants and reduces biodiversity.

Highly attractive to pollinators, drawing them away from native species that rely on them.

Dies back completely in winter, leaving bare riverbanks vulnerable to erosion and sediment loss.

Chokes waterways, forming dense stands with thick, spongy roots that can block small burns and alter flow.

On the Deveron catchment, giant hogweed remains our top priority, which leaves a shorter window to tackle balsam. To make the biggest impact, we’re focusing our efforts in the upper catchment, reducing seed spread downstream and preventing new infestations from establishing.

What a fantastic day at the Turriff Show!

It was great to meet so many new people, catch up with familiar faces, and chat about the work we’re doing across the Deveron catchment. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table – your interest and support are hugely appreciated.

The NFUS NE charity auction to support our Trust and Sma Wids was also a great success, and we’d like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who donated, bid and helped make it such a positive outcome.

A special congratulations goes to Lorna Paterson from NFUS North East on receiving the Unsung Hero Award. It was a thoroughly deserved recognition of her dedication and hard work, and we were delighted to see her efforts acknowledged.

We look forward to continuing to work together with Lorna and our many partners to support our rivers, wildlife and local communities.

River Deveron Water Scarcity & Temperature Update.

SEPA has moved the River Deveron into Moderate Scarcity following several months of dry weather. River levels remain very low and environmental impacts are becoming evident across the catchment. Another 2 weeks without significant rainfall and we will be moved to Significant Scarcity by SEPA where water abstraction will be temporarily reduced or suspended at some sites until conditions improve.

The current water temperature is sitting at 16°C. We continue to encourage anglers to take extra care to minimise stress on fish.

Advice for anglers:

Cease fishing when river water temperature exceeds 18°C
Use strong tackle
Always use a knotless net
Keep the fish in the water at all times, even for photographs
Use long-nosed forceps or a hook releasing tool to gently remove the hook
Allow fish to recover fully in steady flow before release

We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as needed.

Deveron, Bogie & Isla Rivers Charitable Trust Chosen as NFUS Charity at Turriff Show 2026

The Deveron, Bogie & Isla Rivers Charitable Trust is delighted to announce that it has been selected as one of the two local charities to benefit from fundraising activities hosted by NFU Scotland (NFUS) at this year's Turriff Show on Sunday 2 and Monday 3 August 2026.

The Trust will join fellow charity Sma Wids as the beneficiaries of fundraising events taking place in the NFUS marquee on Mutch Avenue throughout the show. Funds will be raised through a charity auction during the NFUS North East Drinks Reception & Unsung Hero Award on Sunday evening, as well as through a special raffle featuring two handcrafted Highland cattle garden ornaments, with proceeds helping to support the important work of both charities.

Representing the Trust at the event will be Chair Jim Cruickshank, who will speak about the charity's work to protect, restore and enhance the rivers and the wider benefits that healthy river catchments bring to local communities, wildlife and agriculture.

The Trust is also looking forward to introducing visitors to its new Agri-Environment Advisor, Rosa Holt, who will be available throughout the show in the NFUS marquee. Rosa will be on hand to speak with farmers, landowners and rural businesses about practical ways to protect and enhance watercourses while supporting productive and profitable farming.
Working closely with the agricultural community, Rosa provides practical advice on managing land near rivers and burns, reducing diffuse pollution, improving soil and water management, creating wildlife habitats and identifying opportunities for agri-environment funding and support. Whether you're looking for guidance on buffer strips, natural flood management or wider environmental stewardship, Rosa will be happy to discuss how the Trust can help.
