Local anglers are reminded to have their valid angling permit, or proof of permission to fish, in their possession at all times while fishing and ensure it is available for inspection upon request by fishery board bailiffs or police officers.

Police Scotland North East Wildlife Crime Officers recently conducted a joint patrol on the River Deveron alongside bailiffs from the River Deveron District Salmon Fishery Board. The patrol focused on locations known to be vulnerable to illegal fishing activity.

Police Scotland will continue to work in close partnership with Deveron bailiffs throughout the fishing season and beyond to identify, deter and take appropriate action against individuals engaged in illegal fishing and poaching activities on the Deveron and its tributaries.

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Deveron, Bogie and Isla Rivers Charitable Trust - Scottish Parliament Motion

On we are pleased to let you know about a motion that has been submitted to the Scottish Parliament recognising the work of the Deveron, Bogie and Isla Rivers Charitable Trust as it approaches its 25th anniversary in September 2026.

Submitted by: Alexander Burnett, Aberdeenshire West, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party
Date lodged: Thursday, 04 June 2026
Motion type: Standard Motion
Motion reference: S7M-00274

That the Parliament congratulates the Deveron, Bogie and Isla Rivers Charitable Trust on its 25th anniversary, which will be marked in September 2026; recognises the trust’s significant contribution to the conservation, protection and restoration of the River Deveron over the last quarter of a century; acknowledges the importance of its work in preserving and enhancing the natural environment, supporting native flora and fauna and contributing to local communities, the rural economy and the area’s natural heritage; highlights the vital role that the trust plays in the conservation of wild Atlantic salmon, an endangered species that are a key indicator of the health of river ecosystems, through Project Deveron, a 10-year project launched in 2023 in partnership with the Atlantic Salmon Trust; notes, in particular, the trust’s role in establishing Scotland’s first catchment-scale sonar camera system, funded by the Scottish Government, to count returning salmon and the recent completion of its major dam removal project, which restored access to approximately 11 kilometres of river habitat and was supported by Chivas Brothers, through its The River Within partnership, and the Stichting European Open Rivers Programme, and wishes the trust continued success in its efforts for future generations.

Want to become a river Deveron volunteer? We are looking for volunteers to help us with Kick sampling on the Deveron, Bogie and Isla catchments.

We'll provide you with training (through The River fly Partnership) and equipment to lead your own survey with another volunteer to identify 8 key invertebrate species. We'll also be on hand to answer all your questions as needed. You don't need to be an expert, you just need a pair of wellies and transport to the survey site.

Your findings, combined with other sample results, create an in-depth view of river health and can indicate pollution events in the catchment area.

Want to get involved? Email [email protected] and we'll be in touch.

Wild Salmon Day - June 1st

Today is Wild Salmon Day, a chance to celebrate the deep connection between the River Deveron and Atlantic salmon.

That connection stretches back over 1,000 years and is even reflected in a remarkable Class I Pictish symbol stone overlooking the River Bogie, featuring a large salmon carved above a Pictish beast—a powerful reminder of the importance of salmon to the Deveron catchment and its communities.

Today, we are working hard to ensure wild salmon remain part of the Deveron’s future. This includes operating state-of-the-art ARIS sonar technology to monitor and count returning salmon, removing barriers to migration through projects such as the King Edward Weir removal, working with the local farming community to reduce run-off and improve water quality and planting native trees in the Deveron headwaters to help cool river temperatures and reduce stress on juvenile salmon.

We are also proud to support Banff Academy’s inspiring, Is a River Alive? project, helping the next generation understand why healthy rivers and thriving salmon populations matter.

By combining science, habitat restoration and education, we can help ensure that the River Deveron and its wild salmon can be enjoyed by future generations.

A huge well done to the pupils of Banff Academy!

Last Wednesday, four of our S2 pupils — Paige, Suri, Tiwa and Tessa — represented Banff Academy brilliantly at the Aberdeenshire Sustainability Committee. ✨

As part of our S2 Living Rivers Project, they delivered a powerful presentation on the Rights of the River Deveron, asking Aberdeenshire Council to recognise the Deveron as a living river system of ecological, cultural and historical significance. They spoke with real confidence, maturity and passion about youth voice, environmental stewardship, pollution, river restoration, and the role young people can play as River Guardians in their communities.👩‍🏫🐟

Committee members were highly complimentary, and the pupils handled questions from elected members exceptionally well. A genuinely inspiring example of young people engaging directly with democracy and taking action for their local environment. ♻️
