Welcome to Role Models Yorkshire
We’re a voluntary, student run family, that runs out of York Science Park, situated at the heart of the University of York campus. We offer a range of free services to schools in Yorkshire, with the aim to support young people to achieve their full potential. We work with some of Yorkshire most inspiring professional, public servants and students to provide positive role models to young people from low socio-economic and other underrepresented backgrounds.
It all started in June 2019, when our founder Chris Cooper realised the need for positive role models in deprived areas. From a council estate in Hull, Chris himself experienced a lack of positive role models growing up. This lead him into the belief that ‘people like him’ can’t follow professional careers and that there’s no point in trying. Fortunately, Chris had a chance meeting with a student from the University of York who showed him that he could do more with his life. This is when he began his journey to becoming an engineer, now studying MEng Electronic Engineering at the University of York, Chris is dedicated to providing positive role models from similar backgrounds to his.
So, that’s the why Role Models Yorkshire started, but in a short amount of time our student volunteers have worked hard to build this into something that is having a big impact of the life’s of young people. Starting from a small one-man company, we now have a large network of volunteers and our services are supported by some of the world’s biggest companies, charities and nonprofits including Clifford’s Chance, GCHQ and the Cabinet Office. Stay tuned to see what we’re doing now and how we’re using our large network to grow the potential of young people from deprived areas within Yorkshire.
