A New Era for Adventure: Huntingdon Scouts Secure Permanent Home on St Peters Road

For years, the Scouts of Huntingdon have been a "nomadic" force, moving their equipment and activities between borrowed school halls and local community rooms.

In a landmark deal that promises to give young people a place to truly call their own, the organisation has officially secured a 30-year lease on the former maintenance building located on St Peters Road. This move marks the beginning of an ambitious project to transform the industrial site into a custom designed centre for Scouting.

Scouting in Huntingdon is a vibrant local community of the UK Scout Association, dedicated to inspiring young people to develop skills for life through outdoor adventures, teamwork, and community service. Members regularly participate in activities such as camping, hiking, crafts, and environmental projects, creating both independence and a strong sense of responsibility.

A Vision for the Future

The site on St Peters Road is more than just a storage space; it is a blank canvas for the future of local youth development. Plans are already underway to completely refurbish the interior, turning the building into a modern, multi-use hub.

The proposed renovations include:

- A Main Activity Hall: A large, open space for games, physical activities, and large-scale events.
- Modern Meeting Rooms: Dedicated spaces for planning, badges, and community workshops.
- Kitchen Facilities: Enabling the scouts to learn vital life skills and cater for events.
- New Toilets and Amenities: Ensuring the building is accessible and comfortable for all users.

More Than Just Scouting

While the Scouts are the driving force behind the project, the leadership team is keen to emphasize that this will be a community asset. By creating a permanent base, they hope to offer a space that other local groups and organizations can utilise, filling a gap for high-quality community venues in the area.

"Having a permanent home means we can spend less time moving gear and more time providing life-changing adventures for our young people," said Steve Harris, who is leading the project. "This building represents a 30-year commitment to the youth and the people of Huntingdon."

The Final Push for Funding

Transforming an old maintenance building into a community hub is a significant financial undertaking. While the group has already successfully secured several grants and has further applications in the pipeline, there is still a funding gap to bridge.

The project is now reaching out to the local community, businesses, and residents for support. Whether through direct donations, corporate sponsorship, or the donation of materials and labour, every bit of help will go directly toward creating a lasting legacy for the town.
