Statement from the Chairman, Ramsey and District Royal British Legion
I am appalled by President Trump’s recent comments suggesting a lack of frontline engagement in Afghanistan. Such remarks are not only deeply misleading, they are profoundly disrespectful to the men and women of the United Kingdom and allied nations who served, and, in many cases sacrificed in that conflict.
British service personnel operated for years in some of the most dangerous and unforgiving conditions imaginable. They patrolled hostile ground, engaged the enemy at close quarters, trained Afghan forces under constant threat, and paid a heavy price in lives lost and lives permanently changed. To imply that this did not constitute genuine frontline service is an insult to their courage, professionalism, and sacrifice.
As Chairman of the Ramsey and District Royal British Legion, I represent veterans, serving personnel, and their families, people who know firsthand the cost of Afghanistan. Many still live with physical injuries, psychological trauma, and the grief of comrades who never came home. Casual or ill-informed comments that diminish their service only deepen that hurt.
We expect world leaders to speak with accuracy, responsibility, and respect when referring to military service. Anything less undermines the bond of trust owed to those who risk everything in the service of their country.
Our Armed Forces do not need their record rewritten or diminished. Their actions speak for themselves, and they deserve nothing but recognition, gratitude, and respect.
