Epic day on Sunday, as Hunts County hosted the finals of this season’s Cambridgeshire Junior Squash League!
There were two groups for the finals, determined by the league standings after the first three rounds. The top three teams — Gorillas, Bears & Tigers — were battling it out for the title, whilst the remaining three teams — Wolves, Sharks & Crocs — were playing to avoid extinction.
The Championship group had a clear winner as the Gorillas were on ape-solutely dominant form and romped to victory, losing only one match and finishing just two games away from securing maximum points on the day! The win was helped by Samuel Goodger’s Player of the Round-winning performance. The Tigers secured second place thanks to some strong performances throughout the order, leaving the Bears in 3rd place.
There was very little to separate the bottom three in the play-offs, and it came down to the final match of the day to decide whether the Wolves or Crocs would finish bottom. Fortunately for the Wolves, their reliable number one, Danny Waller, took to the court and provided the three points needed to lead the pack to safety. This left the Crocs narrowly short and unable to snap up enough points, resulting in their extinction and making way for a new team next season.
It was a fitting end to a great season of junior squash in Cambridgeshire, with some incredibly close matches and a clear increase in standard since the season started in October!
Huge congratulations to this year’s champions: Samuel Goodger (Ely SC), Lucy Hilton (HCSC), Braydon Birch-Mills(Peterborough SC), Oliver Du (Kings Cambridge) and Jimmi Fowell (Melbourn SC) 🦍 🏆
Well done also to each of this season’s Player of the Round winners: Nico Dello Ioio, Michella Pita, Braydon Birch-Mills and Samuel Goodger.
