Epic day on Sunday, as Hunts County hosted the finals of this season’s Cambridgeshire Junior Squash League!

There were two groups for the finals, determined by the league standings after the first three rounds. The top three teams — Gorillas, Bears & Tigers — were battling it out for the title, whilst the remaining three teams — Wolves, Sharks & Crocs — were playing to avoid extinction.

The Championship group had a clear winner as the Gorillas were on ape-solutely dominant form and romped to victory, losing only one match and finishing just two games away from securing maximum points on the day! The win was helped by Samuel Goodger’s Player of the Round-winning performance. The Tigers secured second place thanks to some strong performances throughout the order, leaving the Bears in 3rd place.

There was very little to separate the bottom three in the play-offs, and it came down to the final match of the day to decide whether the Wolves or Crocs would finish bottom. Fortunately for the Wolves, their reliable number one, Danny Waller, took to the court and provided the three points needed to lead the pack to safety. This left the Crocs narrowly short and unable to snap up enough points, resulting in their extinction and making way for a new team next season.

It was a fitting end to a great season of junior squash in Cambridgeshire, with some incredibly close matches and a clear increase in standard since the season started in October!

Huge congratulations to this year’s champions: Samuel Goodger (Ely SC), Lucy Hilton (HCSC), Braydon Birch-Mills(Peterborough SC), Oliver Du (Kings Cambridge) and Jimmi Fowell (Melbourn SC) 🦍 🏆

Well done also to each of this season’s Player of the Round winners: Nico Dello Ioio, Michella Pita, Braydon Birch-Mills and Samuel Goodger.

Thank you to everyone who took part, to the kind sponsorship of A1 Gearboxes, to for the trophies, and of course to the host clubs: , and Hunts County Squash Club.

We’re looking forward to next season’s league starting up in October and hope to see it continue to develop 💪

The HCSC 20 Minute Championships concluded in style on Friday, with four highly entertaining and competitive finals 💪

Racketball Final:
Marcus Latimer bt Simon Mitchell (+22)

First final of the night and Simon raced out of the starting gate, making the handicapping committee sweat as he established a sizeable lead! Marcus kept his composure and went a couple of runs of unanswered points to edge ahead. Great game and Marcus took the victory 59-45.

Squash Plate Final:
Peter Childerly bt Sarah-Jane Hilton

Peter was quick out of the blocks in this match and built a decent lead early on, after both players starting with no handicap. SJ managed to get used to the hard hitting to close the gap but Peter managed to win crucial points in the last 5 minutes (notably one without his racket) and closed out the win 58-44.

Doubles Final:
Sarah-Jane Hilton & Dave Moreau (+20) bt Emily Fuller & Marcus Latimer

A throughly entertaining matchup and the tightest match of the night saw Emily and Marcus catch their opponents with 3 minutes left on the clock. The pairs then traded points for the remaining 3 minutes and as the timer ran out it was all square, setting up a sudden-death rally! SJ and Dave took the spoils thanks to a delicate drop shot winner; 45-44.

Squash Final:
Michael McKellar (+33) bt Zafer Bilen

Youngster Michael, fresh off tie-break victory in the semis, took on the reining champion in the final showdown of the evening. He was on inspired form and played some fantastic squash, never letting Zafer get a run of points. As the time ticked away, Zafer had to go for his shots and Michael was able to capitalise on the court opening up. A flawless display from Michael and very deserving champion, winning 68-42.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who took part in!

A huge thanks to K2 Sheetmetal & Printing Ltd for sponsoring the event again this year and for the brilliant trophies.

It was great to see a good mix of ages and levels taking part in the first girls only event of the Cambridgeshire Junior Friendly Series. The youngsters got stuck into plenty of fun games, team challenges, handicap matches and a chance to take on the coaches!

Thank you to everyone who came down and we look forward to growing the girls fixtures in the coming seasons 💪

Well done to the SA juniors who hosted a hugely successful Bingo evening at the Pavilion last night as a fundraiser towards their squash tour this summer 👏

The youngsters sourced some brilliant prizes prior to the event, promoted it around the village and ran the event on the night. Thanks to their efforts, over £500 was raised and this will go towards the cost of their squash tour to Wales and the West of England in August 🚌

A massive thank you must go to Sarah-Jane for orchestrating the event, all the individuals and businesses who contributed prizes, and everyone who attended the event!

We’re especially grateful to all the local businesses who provided vouchers as the top prizes:
