Discover the Airfield Research Group: Preserving Aviation History & Fostering Passion for the Skies

Are you a history enthusiast with a passion for aviation? Do you have a deep interest in the rich heritage of airfields, their role in aviation history, and their preservation? Then you’ll want to know about the Airfield Research Group (ARG)—a charity dedicated to preserving and sharing the fascinating story of airfields across the UK and beyond.

What is the Airfield Research Group?

The Airfield Research Group (ARG) is a charitable organization founded with the mission of researching, preserving, and sharing the history of airfields, aerodromes, and aviation infrastructure. The group primarily focuses on airfields from the 20th century, including those used during both World Wars, the Cold War, and even those that played a pivotal role in civilian aviation. Their work includes documenting sites, gathering and preserving historical records, and providing a platform for enthusiasts to learn more about the significance of these locations.

Whether it's an old military base, a defunct civilian airport, or a Second World War bomber station, the ARG has become a key player in ensuring that these airfields and their stories don’t fade into history.

Why Are Airfields Important?

Airfields are more than just landing strips—they are places that tell the story of aviation’s evolution, from the earliest days of flight to the global air travel networks we rely on today. These sites are the birthplace of groundbreaking technologies and the homes of countless military and civilian aviation milestones.

Airfields also hold personal stories, from wartime pilots to the first commercial flights, and even the everyday lives of the people who worked at these places. By preserving these locations and their histories, the Airfield Research Group is ensuring that the voices of those who shaped aviation are heard for generations to come.
