Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in Somersham, Cambridgeshire

Yesterday one of our leaders had the opportunity to visit Nyeri in Kenya. This is the last home, and also the burial place, of Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Scout movement.

We wonder if Baden Powell had any idea, when he tested the first camp for boys at Brownsea Island in 1907, that Scouts would become one of the biggest civil society movements in the world, with over 60 million members in over 200 countries and territories. Truly a global family.

This week saw 3 out of our 4 sections start a new term.
It was great to see all the young people again and meet our new starters.

Some of our Scouts have just got back from the adventure of a lifetime at Poacher International Jamboree. They've enjoyed a week of activities from air rifles to Zorbing, via drone racing, young driver experience, go-karting, scuba diving and ice skating. Plus entertainments including horse boarding, jousting, sky diving, discos, live bands and a firework finale. Looking forward to the next one in 2030!

Once again, the Beavers finished the summer term with an evening of fishing with Somersham Angling Club. Enormous thanks to club members and of especially Tim Palmer for arranging this fantastic event.

Last night we were proud to present three Chief Scout Gold awards - the highest award that Somersham Scouts can give. This represents many hours of dedication and hard work by these young people. We wish them well as they leave us for Explorers and the Young Leader programme.

Some of our Scouts have just returned from a weekend of hillwalking in the Peak District with the Cromwell Mountain Club. As well as the beautiful scenery of Dovedale, they were treated to a steam railway trip into Matlock!

🏆 1st Place for 1st Somersham! 🏆

What a fantastic day at the Somersham Carnival! We’re incredibly proud that our Squirrels, Beavers and Cubs took 1st place in the walking parade! 🎉

Our young people fully embraced this year’s Myth & Magic theme, with an amazing mix of fairies, wizards, dragons, a knight, a unicorn, a mermaid plus others and plenty of magical imagination on display. ✨🐉🧚‍♀️🦄

To top it all off, one of our Cubs also came home with 3rd prize in the children’s fancy dress competition – a brilliant achievement! 🥉👏

🍔🌭 A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our BBQ to buy a burger or hotdog. Your support means so much to us and every purchase helps us continue providing exciting adventures and opportunities for our young people.

Thank you to everyone who came along, cheered us on, and supported 1st Somersham Scouts. We hope you all had a magical day! 💚⚜️

This weekend our Scouts visited the Shuttleworth Collection - an excellent day out! They were able to sit inside an Avro Anson, and saw the world's oldest airworthy aircraft (a Bleriot Type XI, identical to the one Louis Bleriot used to cross the English Channel in 1909).

What a fantastic weekend for 1st Somersham Scouts! 🏕️

Last weekend, 39 young people aged 4–14 enjoyed our annual group camp, supported by 10 leaders, 3 amazing parent helpers who camped with us and 2 others who assisted with catering. Everyone camped on Friday night, with our Cubs and Scouts staying on for a second night of adventure.

Throughout the weekend, our young people had the chance to try a range of activities including archery, the ever-popular cannon run, pioneering and building mini catapults. 🏹🚀

Our Cubs also took part in their annual Weekend on the Water session, organised by the Sea Scouts, giving them the opportunity to enjoy some exciting water-based activities. 🏄‍♀️

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, parent helpers and everyone who helped make the weekend such a success. Seeing so many young people enjoying the outdoors, learning new skills and making memories is what Scouting is all about. 💚

Last night our Scouts explored Ely, England's second-smallest city. A particular highlight was the Knife Angel, a touring monument created by sculptor Alfie Bradley at the British Ironwork Centre. It has been crafted from more than 100,000 knives and blades confiscated by police forces across the UK, and serves as a powerful symbol of the human cost of knife crime and violence.
