Hoglet update

Freya is doing such a great job with her babies.

Other than weeing in her nest she's practically perfect. On the plus side I do get to weigh the hoglets each time I have to change bedding.

Arriving at 27g each, 10 days later Echo is 98g and Skye is 133g. Eyes are now open.

Poor Freya has so many bald patches from ringworm. This will be treated as soon as the babies leave the nest.

Albert arrived on the 4th May having been found staggering round a garden in St Ives.

I have posted his story on here before so thought I would share a video update.

663g on arrival (far too skinny) with a head trauma causing a head tilt and difficulty walking along with ringworm.

After a few days of pain relief and anti inflammatories his neurological symptoms improved and he can now walk about with no issues.

He's an older hedgehog with several teeth missing which explains the weight loss. Since being here on soft food he has gained over 300g and is now in much better shape. His spines are also starting to regrow.

He was a nightly visitor in the garden he came from and will eventually be released back there as Jackie, who found him, is happy to put out soft food for him each night.

Albert is a very gentle sweet hedgehog and one of my favourites.

Here he is...

This morning I had to clean out the nest in the mother and baby unit. I always leave this as long as possible to keep stress levels low for mum as nest disturbances can result in mum (Freya) rejecting her little ones.

However, this morning it was starting to smell strongly of urine so had to be done. In order to minimise handling and stress I made a new nest in a separate unit and put some of the cleaner old nesting material in with the new straw so it would smell familiar.

Babies came out first - I quickly weighed them to check progress and took a photo before placing in new nest. I immediately put mum in next to them and gave her space. She took them in straight away.

Both hoglets have gained well but one is quite a bit behind the other one so I am going to need to monitor weight regularly to ensure there are no issues with the smaller one. Hoglets have been named Sky and Echo.

Arrival weight was 27g. They are now 59g and 86g.

Good morning everyone. Another beautiful day.

While we remain closed due to the continued care of my mum who is not yet 100% I did make an exception yesterday.

Lucy in St Neots has been monitoring a mum and babies nesting in her garden and putting out food and water regularly to help.

Yesterday there were flies around the nest and 2 hoglets had passed away. This was a critical case with no time to spare.

Ellisa in the team immediately went to collect them. Mum and 2 remaining hoglets were placed in separate carriers to minimise risk of mum potentially hurting the babies in transit which they can do when they feel threatened.

I was relieved to find no fly strike and 2 very healthy hoglets. Just 27g they were both hydrated clearly having been recently fed by mum. Although mum has spine loss from ringworm there is no evidence of serious ringworm and she appears healthy otherwise.

The options are to separate mum from babies and hand rear or to put them in together and hope mum continues to look after them. Both options have risks. Mum is always going to do a better job but she could reject them. While I have a lot of success in hand rearing there's a chance the babies won't make it.

So the decision was made to put them in together and give mum space and quiet to do her job.

So far so good. Mum has buried herself in the nest with the babies. She's come out overnight to eat and drink. The nest won't be disturbed for the next 10 days unless absolutely necessary as the more she's disturbed the more chance of her rejecting them .

Massive thank you to Amanda at Spiny Norman’s Hedgehog Support for donating these fantastic mother and baby units which are perfect for this situation.

Thank you to Lucy for her quick actions and to Ellisa for collecting them.

If gardening today please be careful and check area carefully first. Disturbed nests are common at this time of year. Here is a video of when babies were first put in with mum.

Our wildlife is desperate for food and water.

With the hot weather the ground gets hard making foraging nearly impossible and water is scarce.

Hedgehogs in particular rely on us for help as they can only travel so far in search of sustenance.

So please please put out dishes of water and some kitten kibble or a good hedgehog food like Brambles or Spikes to help them.

The birds will thank you for dishes of water and food too. I've just put seed and dishes of water out this morning and the birds are loving it.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend and think wildlife if you're mad enough to do any gardening in this heat. Hedgehogs will nest in leaves, long grass, pretty much anywhere. Check before you mow, strim or dig.

Here is Bertie after his ringworm treatment yesterday. He's nearly ready to go home but did mention he's enjoying the free air conditioning and would be happy to extend his stay a little longer.

Hi everyone

I am in need of a fully enclosed garden for a hedgehog who can't be released into the wild.

Generally speaking if hedgehogs can't be released into the wild euthanasia is the kindest option but there are exceptions in my opinion.

Lachlan is a lovely big male but he's blind. He's otherwise very healthy. I have released blind hedgehogs into enclosed environments before and they have lived full and happy lives- Mason and Maxwell both had 3 good years.

However, the garden needs to be a reasonable size with undergrowth, bushy plants etc to snuffle around in. Fully enclosed doesn't just mean fences with no holes as hedgehogs can dig under them. Walled gardens or fences with concrete bases are usually best.

If you think you may meet the criteria please message me and I can do a garden check and discuss what's needed.

Thank you

Tonight we have said goodbye and good luck to Stevie and Peony.

Peony arrived on 25th April at 883g with lungworm and congestion. Released back home in Huntingdon fighting fit and 1140g

Stevie arrived on 10th April very poorly having been out during the day for 3 days. Lungworm, roundworm, fluke and giardia he weighed just 389g and was a sad skinny little hog. 6 weeks later he's 808g and so happy to be back home in St Ives he was straight out of his nesting box to explore his familiar routes.

Thank you to the finders for getting help for these two and to the HHR team who have all had a hand in taking care of them.

Here's Stevie ❤️

The huffiest hedgehog we've had this Spring, Stevie is finally ready to go home.

Spotted out during the day for 3 days he was very poorly when he arrived. He's been treated for roundworm, lungworm and fluke along with giardia and is spending a couple of nights outside in a hutch prior to going home.

Isn't he handsome?

There's been a lack of posts as my mum is still very unwell and I'm only just managing to stay on top of things here.

We remain closed until further notice with 12 hedgehogs currently in our care.

Massive thank you to my wonderful team who have been amazing while things have been so difficult. They go above and beyond even fetching prescriptions from doctor and coming here to help at a moments notice.

I appreciate all of you more than I can say.

Here's Albert who is recovering nicely from his head trauma and skin issues.
