Immigration & Asylum Support Kirklees Supporting people seeking asylum and refugees to live safe and fulfilling lives throughout Kirklees. Welcome Club information:

Wednesday, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

IASK is a leading charity that supports people seeking asylum, refugees and migrants in Kirklees. In order to ensure that people seeking asylum and refugees can live safe and fulfilling lives, we are committed to promoting positive change. We are committed to providing assistance and support for our clients, providing them with a safe and secure environment in which to establish friendships and co

nnections in local communities and ensuring that they have a positive experience living in Kirklees. Throughout Kirklees, IASK is continually adapting and responding to local needs. A key part of our strategy is to support people through the asylum process so that they can begin to rebuild their lives in a safe environment. It is our goal to assist our clients at the beginning of their asylum process, throughout the process, and afterward. Together with our partners, we offer two drop-in centres per week, called Welcome Clubs, where we provide most of our services. With the dedication and hard work of our amazing team of trained volunteers, our Welcome Clubs are well attended each week. Hudawi Centre, Huddersfield, HD1 6BG

Thursday, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Quaker Meeting House Paddock, HD1 4TR

The services that we provide are available to those seeking asylum, refugees as well as migrants throughout Kirklees. We offer a wide range of services and are constantly expanding and developing new programs that may be of assistance to our clients. To learn more about the work we do, please visit our website at i-ask.co.uk.

✨ We’re back and we're bringing something special! ✨

An intimate rehearsed reading of Wallace Shawn’s The Fever.

Seasoned performer Taru Sinclair brings a blistering reading of a piece that will challenge and engage!

Originally run in living rooms by appointment only, Wallace Shawn's coruscating 1991 play The Fever posits this. Set in the midst of the eponymous fever, we find our narrator in a country far from their own, confronted with the political persecution they are oft shielded from. As an audience we are drawn into considering the narrator's dilemma: how do we find a morally consistent way to live when faced with injustice?
To call this piece thought-provoking is an understatement but Sinclair still manages to bring lightness and wit to a blistering work.

🍛 Enjoy a freshly prepared Indian Thali dinner before the show, and help raise funds for IASK, all in one evening of food, theatre, and purpose.

🎭 Doors: 6.30pm | Dinner: 6.45–7.45pm | Performance: 8–9.30pm

Every day we see:
• Clients sofa-surfing while their applications sit untouched
• People evicted from accommodation without anywhere to go next
• Weeks and months with no financial support, relying entirely on food banks and overstretched charities

It's a systematic failure!

Yes, technically it's true that people seeking asylum in the UK are eligible for support while they await a decision on their claim, like access to housing, services and a small allowance. But this support often isn't available when it's needed most.

You might see headlines. But what you don't see is the systemic failure that pushes many into destitution.

Delays, lost paperwork, bureaucratic gaps, and sudden transitions between support types (like from Section 95 to Section 4, or post-decision stages) often leave people with no access to funds or housing through no fault of their own.

This creates a devastating reality: people who have fled war, persecution, or violence suddenly find themselves in the UK with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF), because of ineligibility and the system.

Our youngest fundraisers are leading the way!

In 55 days since we launched the campaign, we’ve cycled an incredible 1,407 of our 3,500-mile goal from Huddersfield to Gaza ,a symbolic journey representing our displaced clients, who are battling homelessness and are under Non-Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF).

Every mile counts, and every donation goes directly toward helping our clients access warm meals, travel to vital Home Office appointments, pay for safe night stops, and receive essential support during times of hardship.

It’s not just the children making a difference, staff and volunteers have also taken to their bikes,

We asked… and you delivered! 🧵
Recently, we put the call out for a sewing machine and thanks to the incredible kindness of Kate, we were able to pass one on to Nora.

Today, Nora came to collect it, and the smile says it all! This gift will help her continue her tailoring journey, creating clothes for her kids.

A huge thank you, Kate!

Another busy and heartwarming week at IASK!

We welcomed 139 clients through our doors, whether at our WelcomeMentorWelcomeClub or the IASK Drop-In, all supported by our incredible team of 28 Welcome Mentors. From befriending, interpreting, cooking, setting up, and delivering services, they did it all.

We’re also excited to welcome a new partner, CommunityPlus who joined us today and will now be part of our Thursday IASK Drop-In sessions. Great to have them on board, bringing even more support to our community.

We’re proud to be contributing to Heriot-Watt University’s 2025 study of Destitution in the UK. A big thank you to Dr Lynne McMordie, who spent time with our clients and volunteers during her visit.

Huge thanks to everyone who made this week possible. Wishing you all a restful and well-deserved weekend.

Behind every welcoming smile at IASK, there’s a lot of work happening quietly in the background. Conversations, planning, crisis support, safeguarding checks, referrals, volunteer coordination, and sometimes just being present for someone when they have nowhere else to go.

These aren’t always the things people see in photos or reports. But they’re the moments that hold everything together.

It’s the emails, the cups of tea, the check-ins, the late phone calls, the quiet resilience of staff and volunteers showing up, again and again.

That’s the heart of our work and we are proud that our work is changing lives!

1 Month In!

Yesterday marked one month since we launched our Fundraising & Awareness campaign and together, we’ve cycled an amazing 833.7 miles so far!

We’re so grateful for all the love and encouragement we’ve received; from donations to kind messages, and now, some amazing photos from our supporters who’ve joined us on this journey. 🙌

Thank you for being part of this!

Here’s to many more miles and even more impact!
