Tariro UK - Hope for Youth in Zimbabwe

Tariro UK - Hope for Youth in Zimbabwe Tariro means "Hope" in Shona. We work for hope for young people in Zimbabwe by helping them in education, hunger relief, sanitation, counselling and care.

Tariro began in 2009 when two Zimbabweans: Phillip Mutasa and Nicolas Stebbing, along with an English student, Carl Melville saw the need to help these kids. Firstly, we established a house in Harare where several teenagers could live. Then we encouraged a group at Penhalonga to be organised and watched over by some sisters. Soon after that a small group began in Chipinge. Most recently a group wa

s started in Sherugwi, near Gweru. The children in each of these groups live with relations but the Sisters make sure they have all they need to go to school.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Many people give up something for Lent and this saves them money. They then give this money to some people who need it. Would you like to do that for Tariro?

Lent is a time we think of Jesus fasting in the desert for forty days. It should make us think of those who have to fast because they have no food, no home, no parents. That is where our Tariro children come from. Perhaps this Lent you might make a specially generous donation to help such people?

We asked Kudakwashe what Christmas means to him:

"Christmas is a time for joy, love and togetherness. It's a celebration of hope, kindness and generosity that brings people closer. As we share gifts, meals and laughter with loved ones, we're reminded of the importance of compassion, empathy and connection."

What does Christmas mean to the Tariro family?

"Christmas to me is a time of reflection, gratitude, and togetherness. It reminds me of the value of love, giving, and hope even in the simplest moments. Above all, it is a season that renews peace within and brings us closer despite life's challenges." Ebenezer Ndlovu

Dinner at the Travellers
Many of you will know that we are holding a fundraising dinner at the Travellers Club in London on 5 February. Plans are progressing well, and interest has been very encouraging. If you have already signed up, thank you. If you would like to confirm your place, early payments are a great help to us. We still have some spaces we would love to fill, so do let me know if you would like to join. If you would like to bring a friend or tell someone else about it, that would be great. Not only is it for an important cause, it will also be a lot of fun!

If you need the payment details or would like to join us, please email me at [email protected].

Sponsorship

To make the evening as special as possible — and to ensure all funds raised go directly to the young people we support — we are also seeking sponsors to help cover a portion of the event costs that the ticket price does not meet, such as staffing and wine. The total we need is £5,500, of which £1,000 has already been pledged. Contributions of around £500 (or any amount you feel able to give) would help us greatly. Your support will enable us to host an evening that both celebrates Tariro’s work and inspires lasting commitment to changing the lives of young people in Zimbabwe.

With gratitude,
Nicolas CR

Dear Friends

As we begin our journey through Advent, our hearts are lifted by the thought of Christ’s coming into the world. This season invites us to remember that hope still enters the world, often quietly, through compassion, care and community.

One of the many blessings of Tariro is that hope is never far away. Whenever I think of the young people and the futures they are building, I’m reminded that nurturing their growth is one of the most life-giving things we can do.

Finances

I don’t often write about finance, as I know how generously you already support us. I never want to place pressure on anyone. But this time of year is when many churches and friends feel moved to give to causes close to their hearts, and we are always deeply grateful for those gifts.

January marks the start of the school year in Zimbabwe, and it is one of Tariro’s busiest and most expensive months. We must pay a full term’s school fees for each child and ensure they have uniforms, stationery, transport, and food. To prepare, we need to strengthen our bank balance over December. As part of careful budgeting, we’ll keep our usual Christmas celebrations and gifts low key this year so that we can direct as much as possible toward school fees and essential supplies for January.

Home Looking ahead

Despite all its challenges, Zimbabwe remains a country of great beauty, courage, and faith. My trip was filled with encounters with remarkable young people, devoted Sisters, and loyal friends. I returned encouraged by the progress I saw and grateful for the steadfast support that makes it all possible.

With thanks and blessings,

Healing at Shearly Cripps Children’s Home

Tariro has also continued supporting the Shearly Cripps Children’s Home, an Anglican institution that had fallen on hard times. With Tariro’s help, conditions have improved – the buildings, food, and daily care are better – and now we are focusing on the children’s emotional wellbeing.

Two counsellors visit every week to help the children work through trauma, sadness, and behavioural challenges. It’s a slow process, but already we can see change: small steps towards healing, confidence, and hope.

Celebrations in Harare

On October 4th, we celebrated the Eucharist at the Tariro Youth Project House in Harare. It was a joyful occasion: one young woman, Nokutenda, was baptised, and Byron Mashora and his wife Lydia marked ten years of marriage. Byron was one of the first two boys supported by Tariro back in 2009, and seeing how far he has come was deeply rewarding.

After the service, the music started, and the young people soon took over – a wonderful reminder that Tariro is, above all, a community full of life and hope.

Dear Friends
I am writing this just before setting off to Southern Africa, first to Cape Town to work with the Church and then on 23rd September to Harare for three weeks with our Tariro people. You can imagine how much I am looking forward to this.
I want to see Joram and Arnold who are just starting studies at a vocational school: one in carpentry and the other as an electrician. I want to meet Willard and see how he is preparing for O levels this year. Then there is a new lad, Farai Mlambo, who has just started University. And two of my friends: Ebenezer and Kudakwashe. There is a little group of feisty girls in Tsvingwe I want to see again. The list goes on. We have taken on about 15 new youngsters this year and I am still getting to know them. That is delightful. The downside is the cost. We urgently need more money.
Dinner at The Travellers.
In my last letter I mentioned our upcoming fundraising dinner. Many of you have shown interest, and now it’s time to confirm your place. Here are the details:
📅 Thursday 5th February 2026
📍 The Travellers Club, London
🥂 Drinks at 6.30pm | 🍽 Dinner at 7.15pm
🎤 Guest Speaker: Lucian Msamati — Zimbabwe-raised actor known for his remarkable career on stage and screen, most recently in Conclave.
Tickets are £150 per person, and together we hope the evening will raise £20,000 for Tariro. This support will make a huge difference to the young people in Zimbabwe whose lives you are helping to transform.
To reserve your place, please reply to me ([email protected]) or my co-organiser, Laura Stebbing ([email protected]) Formal invitations and payment details will follow, but for now we need confirmed guests. If you can, gather a few friends and bring them along — the more the merrier.
It will be a wonderful evening. You will meet lots of super people. I shall be really pleased to meet so many of you who have generously supported Tariro. I will also be showing a video of where Tariro is today and how we are planning for the future. Please come if you can.
