Christian African Relief Trust is run by local volunteers based in West Yorkshire. It relies entirely on voluntary contributions with no salaried staff. Supporters are assured that supplies are only sent to registered charities or organisations that will faithfully oversee the distribution on the ground to the most needy and poor, especially children, regardless of caste or creed. The Trustees demand feedback on how your donations have been distributed. The reports make very heart-warming and moving reading – see our Newletters for more details. Generous donations of blankets, clothing, bicycles, and computers, medical, scholastic and vocational training items are sorted and packed by individuals or groups. The annual Harvest Appeal brings in dried and tinned foodstuffs, school stationery and other specialist items. As often as funds allow, a 40ft container is packed full to overflowing ready for dispatch from our Huddersfield warehouse. It costs on average £7500 to send a 40ft container. The cost of sending containers rises year on year, and CART needs to raise £150,000 each year to maintain our current programme. Remember that every penny you give goes directly towards transporting goods from the UK to Africa. It costs about £12 to handle & dispatch a standard box to African destinations. YOUR £12 donation can send:

ONE Box containing about 85 items; OR
ONE Box of food containing packets of pulses, pasta, rice, and tins; OR
ONE ‘Aquabox’ filled with water purifying and emergency aid. YOUR £25 donation can send:

2 wheelchairs OR
2 mattresses OR
2 bicycles OR
2 First Aid boxes

As well as sending much needed basic resources to Africa, the charity also supports an increasing number of development projects that allow people living in Africa to improve their own situation.

❤️ More than just a poultry project

The latest report from Malawi shows that the benefits of this project are beginning to reach much further than the chicken houses themselves.

The sale of eggs and chicken meat has helped increase household incomes, particularly among some of the most vulnerable families.

One particularly encouraging result is the effect on children.

Local health and social welfare workers reported a 20% increase in the number of children from targeted households attending school throughout the year without having to withdraw because of hunger or caring responsibilities at home.

The chickens are helping in another way too. Manure from the poultry houses is being used in household vegetable gardens, and almost 25% of participating households have established backyard gardens, producing vegetables and legumes both for their families and for sale.

🐥 From training to new chicken houses in Kainga

An important part of CART's poultry project in Malawi has been making sure that the communities themselves have the skills and resources needed to make it sustainable.

Government extension workers helped train 450 community members and four Project Management Committees in areas including poultry management, business administration, marketing and group working.

Materials were then provided to help the three communities establish their poultry projects, including feeders, waterers, solar lamps and feed mixers.

A total of 3,150 day-old chicks were supplied:
🐥 750 to Zidana
🐥 1,500 to Malota II
🐥 900 to Kainga

Four community chicken houses were also constructed to meet the requirements of the Veterinary Department.

The local communities have played an important part too, contributing their own labour and materials to help make the project possible.

🐔 An encouraging update from Malawi

We have recently received a new report from the Christian Compassion Committee (CCC) in Malawi, updating us on the poultry project supported by CART.

The project is working with vulnerable families in the communities of Kainga, Malota II and Zidana, helping households to develop a sustainable source of food and income through communal poultry farming.

The project targeted 745 households and more than 4,200 people, with over 60% of the beneficiaries being women.

As this photograph from Malota II shows, the project has progressed from planning and training to established poultry houses with chickens being reared by the communities.

The aim is not simply to provide chickens, but to give families an opportunity to generate income, improve their nutrition and become more resilient to poverty and hunger.

The impact of a CART container doesn't stop in one place.
We have received a report from MACOBO in Malawi explaining how goods from the container sent earlier this year have been shared between several organisations and community groups.

As well as the bicycles, educational materials, clothing and sewing machines received by MACOBO:

• Malosa C.C.A.P. Church received three sewing machines, a desktop computer and an Epson printer.
• Nsalabani Secondary School received two desktop computers and educational books.
• The Malosa Elderly group received bicycles, coats, shoes, bed linen, blankets and educational resources for a day care.

MACOBO told CART that the donations will support vulnerable communities in a variety of ways, including education, skills development and transport.

Seeing where the goods eventually arrive is a reminder of the enormous chain of generosity behind every CART container – from the people who donate items here in Yorkshire, to those who sort and pack them, to our partners who distribute them where they are needed.

Goods from CART's latest container are also helping to support education in Malawi.

Nsalabani Secondary School received two desktop computers together with educational books covering subjects including Mathematics, Physics and Biology.

Educational materials for nursery schools were also received by MACOBO, while the Malosa Elderly group received educational resources for a day-care setting.

These are items which can continue to be used again and again, helping provide resources for children and young people in the communities CART supports.

It is particularly rewarding for us to receive feedback from Malawi and see the journey of the donations continue after the container has arrived.

Sometimes an unwanted bicycle can become something incredibly useful.

Six used mountain bikes from CART's container have been received by MACOBO in Malawi.

In their report to CART, MACOBO explained just how important the bicycles are for their community volunteers. Some of the bikes need repairs and servicing before they can be used, but they will provide valuable transport once they are back on the road.

The photographs we have received from Malawi show the bicycles being collected alongside other goods from the container.

For CART, this is a great example of how donated items can be given a new purpose and continue to make a difference thousands of miles away.

Some lovely news from Malawi!

Earlier this year, CART sent a container of donated goods to Malawi, and we have recently received these photographs from Mangochi showing some of those donations after they reached their destination.

Among the organisations receiving goods was MACOBO (Malosa Community Based Organization), which works to support vulnerable people within local communities.

MACOBO received educational materials for nursery schools, clothing and fabric, bicycles and sewing machines. The bicycles are particularly valuable to community volunteers, helping them to get around and carry out their work.

It is always wonderful to receive news and photographs showing where the items donated to CART eventually end up.

Handing the Project to the Community

🤝 The final step is always the most important...

Once the system had been fully tested, it was officially handed over to the local project committee and Emmanuel Christian Church.

This marks the beginning of the next chapter.

The community now has ownership of a sustainable irrigation system that will support farming, strengthen food security and improve livelihoods for years to come.

Projects like this succeed because local communities are involved every step of the way—from planning through to completion.

The System is Installed!

🎉 Great news from Mgabu!

The solar-powered irrigation system has now been successfully installed and is fully operational.

Seeing the completed water tank standing proudly above the fields is a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved when people work together.

Reliable irrigation means farmers can continue growing crops during the dry season, helping families produce more food and generate additional income.

This isn't simply a water tank.

It's hope.
It's opportunity.
It's a more secure future.

When Challenges Slow Progress

🌧️ Not every project goes exactly to plan...

The irrigation project was originally expected to be completed earlier this year.

However, exceptionally heavy rains across Malawi, particularly in the Lower Shire region, made roads almost impossible to travel.

Transporting materials safely and installing the large water tank simply wasn't possible until conditions improved.

Rather than rushing the work, our partners waited until everything could be completed safely and correctly.

Sometimes the greatest progress comes through patience.

We're grateful to everyone who continued supporting this project despite the unexpected delays.
