Environmental Projects In Kirklees

Environmental Projects In Kirklees EPIKS comprises of a team of volunteer directors and paid staff. We're tackling climate action by promoting active travel to combat pollution and congestion.

Working with volunteers and partners from the business and not for profit sectors means that we can provide environmental solutions that are locally suited to Kirklees. Our projects include the creation and upkeep of traffic-free walking and cycling routes, giving people the chance to try e-bikes and rolling out low-emissions deliveries through e-cargo bikes. Our work along the River Colne Corrido

r from Marsden to Cooper Bridge helps to protect wildlife and gives people better access to cleaner green space. Our vision for a Three Valleys Nature Park that connects people and natural heritage to the valleys of the Holme, Colne and Calder has begun with work on the Huddersfield Riverside Nature Park. EPIKS hosts regular work parties and opportunities to get involved.

If you thought being a volunteer ranger in Huddersfield wouldn’t bring you into contact with potentially dangerous animals, today proved us all wrong.
We discovered that the River Colne has a healthy population of crocodiles, so as part of our stewardship of Huddersfield Riverside Nature Park, they were taken into captivity and will be rehomed with experienced keepers.
On a side line, it is important to be aware of the risks of swimming in our rivers. Cold water kills and currents are unpredictable.
If you’d like to join our team get in touch. We can’t promise it will always be this exciting, but it’s always fun.

🌳 Guided Nature Walk – Thursday 11 June, 11am–2pm

Join us for a gentle, story-filled exploration of Huddersfield’s natural history, told through the trees, plants and wildlife that shape the town.

Led by EPIKS ecologist Gilly, this 3+ mile circular walk starts in St George’s Square and meanders through the town centre, to the River Colne at Snow Island, and onwards to Longley Woods Nature Reserve.
Along the way, we’ll stop often to uncover how Huddersfield’s past is written into its urban wild spaces. At Longley Woods, you’ll gain insights into the woodland’s history, ownership, stewardship and future.
