Let us clear up one of the most common misconceptions in charity finance: being a charity does not make you VAT exempt.

Charities do benefit from some VAT reliefs, and certain activities are zero-rated or exempt. But if your charity trades, delivers services under contract, or charges fees for activities, you may have VAT obligations you have not accounted for. Failing to register when you should, or incorrectly treating income as exempt, can lead to unexpected bills and penalties.

VAT in the charity sector is genuinely complex, and the rules depend heavily on the nature of what you do and how your income is structured. It is worth taking proper advice rather than assuming. If you have questions about your charity's VAT position, we are here.

HMRC estimates that hundreds of millions of pounds of Gift Aid goes unclaimed by UK charities every single year.

That is not because charities are doing anything wrong. It is usually because Gift Aid declarations are not being collected consistently, donors are not asked at the point of giving, or the admin feels too complicated to prioritise. But for a charity receiving regular donations from UK taxpayers, the difference between claiming and not claiming Gift Aid could be significant.

At 25p for every pound donated, it adds up quickly.

If your charity is not yet set up to claim Gift Aid, or if you are not sure whether your current process is as watertight as it should be, we can help. It is one of those areas where a small investment of time can make a real financial difference.

If your charity's income is between £25,000 and £1 million, you are likely required to have an independent examination of your accounts rather than a full audit.

An independent examination is a lighter-touch review carried out by a qualified independent examiner. It checks that your accounts are consistent with your financial records and comply with the relevant accounting requirements, but it is less extensive than a statutory audit.

Knowing which applies to your charity, and finding the right person to carry it out, is important. We provide independent examination services for charities and can also help you understand whether you might be approaching the audit threshold.

Payroll and pension compliance might not be the most exciting part of running a charity, but getting it wrong can be costly.

From ensuring staff are paid correctly and on time, to meeting your auto-enrolment obligations and keeping up with HMRC requirements, there is a lot to stay on top of. For smaller charities especially, managing payroll in-house can be a significant burden on limited admin resource.

Working with a specialist accountant who understands the charity sector means you can be confident your payroll is compliant and your team is being looked after properly.

If you have questions about payroll or pension requirements, we are here to help.

Here's What You Really Need to Know About the Finances First

Starting a charity or community initiative is an amazing step, but the financial side often gets overlooked early on.

Here are 3 key things to consider before you register:
1. Structure Matters - Will you be a CIO, CIC, or charitable company? Each has different accounting and reporting requirements.

2. You'll Need a Bank Account - Sounds simple, but opening one as a new charity can take weeks. Start early!

3. Funding Comes With Strings - Most grants require detailed reporting. Get your systems in place from the start to avoid panic later.

Bonus Tip: Appoint a trustee with financial experience — or work with an accountant who understands the sector.

Got questions about setting up the right way? We specialise in helping new charities and CICs get started on the right financial footing. Let's chat.

Understanding the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) can feel overwhelming, but it's essential to get right.

SORP sets out the standards for how charity accounts should be prepared and presented. But what does this actually mean for your organisation? And what are the key principles you need to understand?

We've put together a guide to demystify SORP compliance. From fund accounting to narrative reporting, we explain the core requirements and what your charity needs to do to stay compliant.

Getting your accounts right means transparency, credibility, and stakeholder confidence. Let's make it simple.
