I’m not sure how to begin this one, I’ve started typing and deleted four times now. I guess it’s because I’ve been meaning to sit and update you all for a while but the last couple of months have been some of the hardest we’ve faced at the sanctuary.

Shortly after Bobby’s surgery on Friday the 24th April, we lost Larry. Now we shouldn’t have favourites and we don’t have favourites, but if we did – my favourite sheep would have been Larry.. She carried something quietly special about her, her eyes were bright and knowing, she had a gentle elegance to her. She was a timid girl but if you took the time, if you moved gently and earned her trust, she would meet you there. It wasn’t just that she was lovely to look at, it was the feeling she brought with her. Calm. Warmth. Larry held on all day after the vets visited in the morning as we’d been worried about her the night before too, I stayed with her all day and tubed her liquid feed, kept her pain relief up. But when I felt I couldn’t help anymore I asked Leahurst to admit her late afternoon then she quietly and peacefully let go a couple of hours later.

On Sunday 24th May, I arrived to Phoebe seizing. Whilst up and able to defend herself the vets were unable to access her enclosure so we had to monitor her from the fence. We spent all day keeping her cool, playing her music that kept her calm and feeding her her favourites (banana sandwiches) but sadly hours later I had to make the decision for the vets to come to help her cross the rainbow bridge as she did not recover from the third seizure and I couldn’t watch her struggle on. Over the last 6 months I’ve been working to gain Phoebe’s trust, my goal for the year was to be able to go in their enclosure freely. She had started to bond with me, trust me, and would let stroke her. I’ll never know if Phoebe and I were destined to be best friends but she did let me in her enclosure to feed her and to stroke her back and belly on her last day with us. I hope she passed knowing connection and love because earning her trust is one of my biggest honours.

To lose one animal is heartbreaking, to lose two who were so loved, so closely together on our timeline, has left a hole and a pain that’s difficult to put into words, If you’ve followed us a while you’ll know they’re all a part of our family so their absence is felt ever day.

Behind the scenes, these losses have come at a time when there have also been personal challenges to navigate. As many people involved in animal rescue will understand, life doesn’t pause when your heart is hurting. But carrying grief while trying to keep moving forward can be incredibly difficult.

We also know that grief is the price we pay for loving deeply. Larry and Phoebe were loved deeply.

We are trying to be gentle with ourselves as we process these losses. We also wanted to be honest with our supporters about where we are. Running a sanctuary is a privilege, but it also comes with immense emotional weight, and right now that weight feels particularly heavy as I know I have many ageing residents.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support us. Your kindness helps carry us through days when the sadness feels overwhelming. Your help helps us cover the cost these things sadly bring with them.

Larry and Phoebe, my beautiful girlies, you were cherished beyond measure by every member of the Willowfields family. Enjoy the freedom of the meadows beyond the rainbow bridge, reunited with your friends and family. 🌈🫶🏻

✨ AN • EXCITING • NEW • CHAPTER ✨
🕊️So many questions…

After more than a decade of running my sanctuary largely single handedly, I’m incredibly excited to have shared our big news with you all recently 🙌

As many of you know, caring for wildlife and providing sanctuary for animals has been my life for many years.
It has been a journey filled with challenges, rewards, heartbreak, and countless success stories. But no matter how much passion you have, there comes a point where you realise that together, you can achieve even more. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that I have officially joined forces with my wonderful friends at Willowfields 🦃

This merger means that, for the first time in over ten years, I won’t be doing it all alone. Instead, I’ll be part of a dedicated team, a new family, united by the same vision and determination to help as many animals as possible.

We have already started work on a much needed larger enclosure for my disabled pigeons, who will be moving to the Willowfields site, along with some of my other birds, over the course of this year.
A number of enclosures housing my most needy birds will remain here with me, where they will continue to receive the specialist care they require.

Joining forces with Willowfields does not mean stepping away from my birds. Quite the opposite. I will still be caring for them and overseeing their welfare, along with playing a big part in maintaining the care of the many birds already safely homed at Willowfields. The difference is now I’ll have much-needed support with the day-to-day responsibilities, allowing me to do even more for the animals who need us.

As we continue this exciting transition, our social media presence here will gradually become less active as we combine our accounts.
To keep up with our animals, projects, rescues, and future plans, please make sure you're following Willowfields Sanctuary & Rescue.

My good friend Suz, the face behind Willowfields, and I have some exciting ideas, ambitious plans, and dreams for the future. We can't wait to bring you along for the journey and show you what we can achieve together.
Thank you all for your support over the years. Every rescue, every recovery, and every life saved is always met with your kindness and encouragement.

Here's to the next chapter. ❤️🕊️Make sure to follow 🫶🏻 Willowfields Sanctuary & Rescue

Some snaps from our most recent DIY day. 🛠️🌿

A few highlights included a brand new palette climbing frame and viewing platform for our goats, as well as the early beginnings of an exciting project we can’t wait to share more about soon… ✨

The goats have been busy exploring their new enrichment area - they seem to be especially enjoying the shady spot underneath for afternoon lounging. 🐐

If you're a dab hand at DIY but can't commit to a regular animal care shift, we'd still love to hear from you. Send us a private message and our team will be in touch. 🫶🏻
