"Watching Woman Grows Jeans felt like listening to a half-remembered song from childhood , both familiar and strange at once. I couldn’t help thinking how differently we’d all view clothing if spinning and dyeing and weaving were still part of everyday life. If we’d seen fibre change in our own hands, perhaps we’d never have arrived at the idea that clothes could be disposable." - Jules Fallon

What began as a community challenge to bring homegrown jeans to market, ended with a personal rite of passage and a prototype that made British fashion history.

“‘It’s incredible, to see woad and flax - plants native to the Northern England Fibershed’s ecosystem, transformed by community, and the passion and talent of Justine into the most functional and necessary garment. Members of the Northern England Fibreshed were showcasing wool from the region at the Great Yorkshire Show last month.

This year, the 166th event hosted the ‘Wensleydale Sheep: A Handcrafted History’ exhibition, which told the story, past and present, of the Wensleydale sheep breed. It is a travelling exhibition curated by Jodi Shadforth, that features artworks by 40 textile artists throughout the UK, all of whom have made use of the breed’s wool.

Sophie Heywood, joined the Rare Breed Survival Trust tent with her fully traceable, rare breed yarns and knitwear alongside needle felted and handwoven creations. Sophie gave a talk on and accessible wool crafts.

and soon-to-be new Fibreshed member, also featured in the British Wool tent and fashion show. Even the BBC’s popped along to chat to the sheep and support the event.

Read more about it by joining our newsletter (that’s just about to be emailed) via the link on our profile page.

British Wool Fair at Sedbergh 🐑SHEEPFEST 🐑 THIS Saturday 23 August 2025, 10-4pm.

Featuring crafty model sheep dressed as ‘celebrities’ which have been created by local businesses and residents with a fair amount of wit and humour. You’ll find them lurking in shop windows and gathered in a flock at St Andrew’s church.

A short walk from the centre of Sedbergh, farmers and artisan makers will be showcasing gorgeous woollen knitting yarn and woven products made from regional fleece. If you knit, weave, crochet, felt, craft or are otherwise addicted to wool, you won’t want to miss it. Amongst what promises to be a show full of colour, you’ll find plenty of produce that follows principles.

We are delighted to present Eden Gotland Sheep, Doulton Border Leicesters, Sheepfold and Marethdale Yarn who will showcase yarns from their own sheep, and who will be bringing a selection of British wool yarns from other producers.

They’ll be joined by Why Not Alpacas who, weather permitting, will bring a couple of their herd to meet visitors as well as yarn and products made from fleece from their alpacas located just up the valley.

Amongst the artisan makers are weavers .sharman and who will bring beautiful textiles products made from yarn sourced from local flocks. You’ll also find Wools of Cumbria Carpets, and wonderful felted artwork from

We’re pleased to welcome new vendors to this event. whose stalls will feature handwoven clothing, bags, gifts and other items along with who specialise in natural dyestuffs.
