Martlets Hospice

Martlets Hospice Martlets is a local charity that provides terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove, and surrounding areas, with the very best care and support.

Our expert team helps patients live life to the full during the precious time they have left. Martlets opened in 1997. The staff and services were formed from the merger of three separate charities: Coppercliff Hospice, Tarner and MacMillan Day Hospice. Across the hospice services, more than 25,000 local people have been supported and cared for since 1997. Most people receive care from us in their

own homes. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities. Others choose to spend their final days here, or to join us as inpatients for respite care or symptom management. Thank you for your generous support – it enables us to provide exceptional care that changes lives.

💛 During Volunteers’ Week, we’re sharing one more story from the amazing people who make our work possible.

Today, we hear from Ranil, one of our volunteer counsellors:

“As a counsellor, I decided to volunteer at St Barnabas House, as the combination of professional support, supervision, and the chance to work with people at such significant moments in their lives really drew me in. I feel genuinely appreciated and supported in my role. Volunteering here makes me feel as though I’m giving something meaningful back to the community. Being able to offer support at such a vulnerable time in people’s lives feels like a real contribution and privilege.”

💬 Ranil, volunteer counsellor, St Barnabas House

To every single one of our volunteers, thank you for everything you give. You make such a difference 💫

💛 As Volunteers’ Week continues, we’re shining a light on the incredible people who give their time to support our hospices.

Your time, kindness, and support make such a difference every single day. Because of you, we can continue to provide compassionate care and create meaningful moments for patients and their families ✨

Today, we hear from Alison:

“I love volunteering because I enjoy gardening and get a huge amount of pleasure from seeing the gardens at St Barnabas look lovely. Hospice care matters to me because I have seen what it does for people and their families. We see patients and family members out in the gardens, and we know it is so important to have that special, quiet space. I recommend volunteering to others because it helps you feel part of a team and people really appreciate what you do.”

Today is ‘What Matters to You’ Day, a global initiative that champions person-centred care: listening deeply to patients and loved ones to understand what is important to them, rather than focusing only on diagnosis, symptoms or tasks.

At Martlets, “What matters to you today?” is a question our nurses, healthcare assistants and doctors ask patients and families every day on our inpatient unit. It reveals the actions and moments that enable connection, joy, dignity and choice, and help make precious memories. 💙

In this short film, Richard, who spent his final weeks on Martlets' inpatient unit, explains why “What matters to you?” is such a powerful question and shares what mattered most to him and his family in relation to his end-of-life care:

Volunteers’ Week, 1–7 June, is a national celebration of the millions of people who give their time and skills to support causes close to their hearts. Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing comments, photos and video clips from our amazing volunteers at Southern Hospice Group.💙

“Whether it’s serving tea and cake at one of our hospice cafes, keeping our gardens in bloom, or offering kindness and a smile on our inpatient units, our volunteers take on a variety of essential roles,” says Georgia Ellick, volunteering services lead at Southern Hospice Group. In 2026, we estimate our volunteers will give us 140,000 hours of their time – equivalent to £1.79 million. So, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who volunteers for us.

For years, Jan was a familiar face in Brighton & Hove – first behind the wheel as a bus driver, then standing up for others as a union representative. 🚌 💙

When she was suddenly diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in December 2025, her family’s world changed overnight. Jan and her husband Graham share their story and explain how Martlets has brought comfort, dignity and peace during the toughest of times:

www.martlets.org.uk/blog/jans-story-care-courage-and-community/

"The nurses at Martlets make themselves available in such a natural, caring way. They’re incredibly good at sensing what people need – not just physically and medically, but emotionally too. They gave Jan dignity at an incredibly difficult time."

- Graham

Jan died on 18 May 2026 on Martlets’ inpatient unit – a week after sharing her story. Her family have asked for her words and photos to be shared as a celebration of her life, and in recognition of the care she received from the Martlets team.

Debbie’s husband Derrick was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. He was always smiling, always talking, and always the first on the dance floor! 🕺

When Derrick was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, his health declined quickly and the family urgently needed support. When the hospice said they had a bed for Derrick, it was an answer to Debbie’s prayers.

At the hospice, Derrick, Debbie and their daughters were given the precious gift of time. Time to say everything they needed to. Time to be together. 💙

Can you help people like Derrick make precious memories? Make a donation: www.martlets.org.uk/making-memories

This Summer, we invite you to join us in making memories! 🌻

At Martlets, we are dedicated to helping families make precious memories with the time they have together. These moments will stay with a family and bring comfort for many years to come.

Making memories can be as small as enjoying a favourite film together, taking a simple walk to a familiar spot, cuddling a beloved pet or sharing memories over a cup of tea. Big or small, we help families make these moments possible.

Thanks to your support, we can continue helping families live life to the full and make precious memories in the time they have left. 💙

Running the Brighton Marathon in memory of his mum, Christian Crowley raised an amazing £10,125 for Martlets 🩷🏃‍♂️

After Martlets cared for his mum with kindness and compassion in her final days, Christian took on the challenge to support vital hospice care.

He shared: “In my mum’s final days, Martlets cared for her with kindness and compassion. Not only did they provide a fantastic service to my mum, they also supported my family and me through a very difficult time.”

Christian’s incredible fundraising contributed to the amazing total of more than £200,000 raised by runners supporting hospice care across Sussex 🙌

A huge thank you to all our runners for going the extra mile for local hospice care ✨
