Good luck to our China trekkers! 🥾

This weekend, an incredible group of 15 trekkers will be setting off to take on an unforgettable challenge along the Great Wall of China, all while raising vital funds for our hospices.

You may even spot a familiar face in our fantastic group!

Elizabeth Odero, who appeared in the 2025 series of Race Across the World alongside her sister, is heading back to China. Having started their race at the Great Wall of China but not had the opportunity to walk along it, Elizabeth is returning to complete that journey!

'Don't leave hospice care to chance.'

This we're celebrating the incredible impact our teams have on families across Sussex – but we couldn't do any of it without the support of our communities.

Today, CEO Stuart Palma writes in SussexWorld and shares our determination to help make the case for getting fair and sustainable funding for hospices.

He writes: "Donations make up the majority of hospice funding, and we know people want to give back, especially when their loved one has been cared for by our dedicated teams. But as costs rise, government funding needs to play its part and there is an opportunity to reduce inequality across the country if it gets that right."

"I will treasure that memory forever..." - daughter Joanne speaks on BBC Radio Sussex about her mum Denise's care at our sister hospice St Barnabas House when two ponies paid a very special visit.

Healthcare Assistant Claire helped make the grandmother's last wish come true by organising the bedside visit.

Claire explains: "At our hospices, we ask patients ‘what matters to you today?’. We focus on those things right at the front of their mind that day, and it can be something as simple as spending time with a loved one or getting outdoors. When I asked Denise what mattered to her, she told me she just wanted to see a horse, one more time; she wanted to feel its breath on her hand."

The team pulled out all the stops and the very next day there were hooves trotting in the hospice grounds.

Claire added: "Denise was just so delighted. It was a very emotional moment; we all cried. But I’m just so happy that we were able to help fulfil Denise’s last wish and for her family to have these precious memories with their mum.”

📣 Today, Clinical Nurse Specialist Julie joined BBC Radio Sussex presenter Sarah Gorrell to tell her about the moment she jumped from a plane at 12,000ft in support of hospice care!

Julie was inspired to take the plunge by one of her patients, 83-year-old Colin. The octogenarian has supported Martlets for over 16 years with bucket shaking, zip wiring and even sky diving. Sadly, he had to stop due to ill health but he shared his adventures with Julie when he came under Martlets' care.

She told the programme that Colin was 'an inspiration' and how working for the hospice and with families felt like 'a privilege and an honour.'

A huge thank you to Julie, skydiving teammate Mel, and everyone who helps raise vital funds for life-changing hospice care. Together, we can raise awareness and keep demanding fair funding for all, for now, forever.

Hospice care eases the physical and emotional pain of death and dying, letting people focus on living, right until the end.

But in the UK, nearly 1 in 3 people don’t get the care they need at the end of their lives. With government funding varying wildly, financial support for hospices and the care available to their communities becomes a postcode lottery.

Everyone deserves high-quality hospice care, whoever they are, and wherever they live. So, while we’re celebrating our hospices and colleagues this , we’re also pushing for change and joining Hospice UK in saying: don’t leave hospice care to chance.

Help hospice care be there, for all, for now, forever.
