RSPCA Assured šŸ‘€ Look for the label
šŸ¤ Together, we have the power to improve the lives of millions of farmed animals.

Choose higher welfare, choose RSPCA Assured

RSPCA Assured is the RSPCA's not-for-profit farm assurance and food labelling scheme. We hope you will use our page to ask us questions about farm animal welfare and to share current food and farming news or topics relevant to the UK. We ask you to keep your comments and questions on the topic of higher welfare food and farming. We reserve the

right to remove off-topic comments and to ban anyone who repeatedly makes off-topic comments. We will not tolerate bullying, or defamatory remarks, and we will remove posts that contravene this. We will also remove entries that post details of farms, any details of any ongoing RSPCA investigations, and any allegations of cruelty should be reported to the RSPCA cruelty line on 0300 1234 999 where the appropriate people can take action straight away. Moderation rules:

Whilst we want this to be an open and honest forum we also want posts to be courteous and to not cause offence, therefore we reserve the right to delete or hide any of the following:

• Violent, obscene, profane, hateful, or racist posts, links or images
• Comments that threaten or defame any person or organisation
• Solicitations, advertisements, or endorsements of any financial, commercial or not-for-profit organisations.
• Comments that suggest or encourage illegal activity
• Multiple successive off-topic posts by a single user
• Repetitive posts copied and pasted or duplicated by single or multiple users
• posts containing specific details about RSPCA cruelty cases (these should be reported to the cruelty line on 0300 1234 999, and not posted on Facebook)
• Posts which we feel may potentially impact upon RSPCA prosecutions. Where an investigation is considered ā€˜active’, any comments made about the case may mean someone facing charges might not be in a position to have a fair trial and the trial could collapse. We reserve the right to ban any user who infringes these rules.

Ever wondered what different food labels mean for farmed animal welfare? šŸ¤”

From ā€˜free-range’ and ā€˜organic’ to 'British' and 'farm fresh', the terms on packaging can be confusing. Not all descriptions and labels represent the same standards - some focus more on food safety and others on animal care.

Our latest blog breaks down the most common labels so you can make informed choices that align with your values: Informed choices: what food labels mean for animal welfare: https://www.rspcaassured.org.uk/blog/food-labels-explained

ā€œBut I thought cages were banned?ā€

While traditional cages were outlawed in 2012, millions of UK hens are still confined to laying their eggs in "enriched" colony cages. For these smart, social birds, life behind bars means never being able to fully stretch their wings or perform natural behaviours like dustbathing.

It’s time to move beyond "better" cages and towards real freedom! We’re breaking down the reality of hen welfare in the UK and how you can help us bring an end to this enriched cage era. Find out more: https://bit.ly/4pM6O3g

In the UK, around 10 million hens are still confined to ā€˜enriched cages’.

But on RSPCA Assured certified farms, there’s no such thing.

Thank you to over 22,000 supporters who helped the for responding, speaking up and taking action for caged farmed hens.

When you look for the RSPCA Assured label, you’re supporting a cage-free life for every hen behind the eggs you buy.

Easter is a time when many of us come together with family and friends for a meal – whether that’s brunch, lunch at a pub or dinner out. But there’s something you might not realise when you sit down to eat.

We check labels in the supermarket to support higher welfare farming, yet most UK cafƩs and pubs don't always offer the same transparency.

Currently, UK food venues don’t have to tell you where their eggs come from or how they were produced.

Meaning what exactly?

It means the eggs could come from farming systems that have been illegal in the UK for over a decade.

Find out how you can make a change this Easter šŸ‘‡

What does ā€˜higher welfare’ actually mean? šŸ¤”

When you see the RSPCA Assured label, it means the farms have met strict RSPCA welfare standards to give animals a better life.

From pigs and laying hens to salmon and cows, the standards are designed to put the animals’ welfare first. This means:

šŸ– More space to move and roam

🪹 Enrichment to keep minds active - like straw for pigs to root around in

ā˜€ļø Natural light and comfortable bedding

🐄 Freedom to express natural behaviours.

Next time you’re at the supermarket, look for the RSPCA Assured label. Your choices really do make a difference.

Big news for farmed animals šŸ

From today, animals classed as livestock, such as sheep and alpacas, will have greater protection against dog attacks in England and Wales, thanks to the amended Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act we've contributed to.

Any dog, even the most well-trained, has the potential to worry livestock, which can lead to stress, injuries or pregnancy loss in farmed animals. To protect every kind of animal, owners should ensure dogs can't escape homes or gardens, and either keep dogs on-lead when approaching, or choose another spot for walkies altogether.

One day, someone will tell you there’s a place for women in farming, and it’s very important you listen to them to help make a difference.

At RSPCA Assured, women make up around 80% of our team - driving change, conducting assessments, and ensuring farmed animals live better lives.

Learn more in our latest blog about the vital role of women in higher welfare farming this International Women’s Day: https://www.rspcaassured.org.uk/blog/international-womens-day

Sneak peek alert! We’ve been in the studio with RSPCA Assured farm assessor, Mark, recording an important message for our brand new radio ad.

From muddy boots to studio headphones, we’re stepping up to the mic to highlight why farmed animal welfare matters.

No actors. Just the real experts behind the RSPCA Assured label.

Be sure to keep an ear out across Absolute Radio and Greatest Hits from the 23rd of March for the final result.

šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳ó æ To mark St. David’s Day, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible Welsh farmers who go above and beyond for farmed animal welfare.

We’re incredibly proud to work with Welsh farmers who put their animals' welfare at the heart of everything they do, proving that tradition and higher welfare standards can go hand-in-hand.

Our assessment manager, Charlotte, always feels a huge sense of pride on St David’s Day. Read her blog to find out why: bit.ly/4b32oQ5
