Horncastle: u3a

Horncastle: u3a Welcome to Horncastle u3a. We are a group ideal for people no longer in full time work, looking fo Our groups usually meet fortnightly or monthly.

The u3a movement aims to encourage people in their "third age" to come together and continue their enjoyment in activities of interest to them. The guiding principles of u3a are to promote lifelong learning through self help interest groups covering a wide range of topics and activities chosen by the members. The "third age" is defined by a time in your life (not necessarily chronological) where y

ou have the opportunity to participate in learning in activity groups. There is no minimum age, but the focus is on people who are no longer in full-time employment or raising a family. Our u3a has approximately 200 members (Aug 2022) with 80 or so regularly attending our monthly meetings. We have over 25 interest groups, including Art, Books, Craft, Games, Gardening, Photography, various Walking groups, etc. We are always keen on extending our range of groups, so if you have a particular interest please contact us. Monthly meetings are held for all members on the first Tuesday of every month at 10 am in the Stanhope Hall, Boston Road, Horncastle, LN9 6NF. We usually have a guest speaker or entertainment followed by free refreshments. There is the opportunity to meet other members and group leaders to discuss any points of interest. Please see the groups for more information. Non -members are very welcome to attend two general meetings as visitors before deciding whether to join. Membership will be £15 year (April 22 to March 23) and entitles you to attend any Monthly meeting, interest groups where there are vacancies and vote at the Annual General Meeting. Non-members are very welcome to attend 2 monthly meetings before joining.

hello 👋 please see below details of our next Horncastle EXPLORING CHURCHES activity

Please be aware of slight changes which preceded the main post!

Dear Member

I have been advised that we will now have to visit Ashby Puerorum first next week. This means we will get our coffee etc at the first church rather than the second. Also people should park in the farmyard near the church please. Those going directly to the church should aim to get to Ashby Puerorum by 10:15.

Regards

Jeff

Dear Member

The next meeting will be on Tuesday 16th June. David has arranged for us to visit local churches at Greetham followed by Ashby Puerorum. Refreshments will be available at Ashby Puerorum for a donation. As usual we will meet at The Wong carpark at 10am. If the funfair is still there then meet round the corner in Cagthorpe. If you are travelling directly to Greetham could you get there for 10:15. Please note that I will be travelling directly to Greetham on this occasion as it is on my doorstep but I'm sure there will be kind people at The Wong who can offer those without transport a lift.

Could you please let me know if you are intending to come by Friday so that we can advise on numbers for catering.

Regards

Jeff Jones

Exploring Churches

Dear Member

David has arranged a visit to All Saints at Wragby and St Giles at Langton by Wragby on Tuesday 19th May. As usual we will meet at The Wong at 10am. If you wish to travel directly to All Saints could you aim to get there at about 10:15. Unfortunately we are not able to get refreshments organised due to illnesses and holidays but perhaps we could come back to Horncastle to the Big chair for a coffee this time. Could you please let me know if you would like to go to the Big Chair so that we can let them know the number of people who are coming.

HORNCASTLE u3a MONTHLY MEETING

Dear u3a members,

Our next monthly meeting will be as below:

• Tuesday 5th May

• 10.00 am

• Stanhope Hall

• Refreshments afterwards

Speaker

The speaker will be Evie Kimson from CVS Lincolnshire.

• CVS Lincolnshire is a charity that helps other charities and volunteers. They offer various types of support – training, governance advice, signposting.

• It was formed by combining several existing charities, to reduce duplication and offer bigger and better support to all those in the volunteer sector.

Volunteering is vital – as we in the u3a know all too well. A recent government estimate put the value of the volunteer sector in England alone at around £25bn, in replacement cost and wellbeing benefits – so it’s not small beer. We’d be lost without it these days.

Evie’s talk will be an insight for us all into the nuts and bolts of volunteering in our county.

Upcoming trip – Western Scotland

Following the very successful trips to Beverley and Ireland, Marilyn is planning an Autumn trip to the West of Scotland. Probably 5 nights away, the trip will cover the wild and woolly landscape up there. Most importantly, it will be after the midge season!

Prices are being compiled, but will depend to some extent on numbers. So if you’re interested, or would just like to find out more, buttonhole one of the committee at the next meeting, or contact Marilyn on 07917-284432. You can also get in touch via the website.

Help! – newsletter person needed

Talking of volunteers, we need someone to step up to the mark on our own doorstep. We have a vacancy for someone to look after the new newsletter formats – annual printed edition and monthly digital newsletters.

You don’t have to have any great writing or web skills – just a will to find out what’s happening in the groups and the membership, and let everyone else know about it.

Plenty of help and assistance is available. All it needs is someone willing to put their hand up and volunteer to do it. It could be you!

If you’re that person, either email me at [email protected] or approach any of the committee at the upcoming meeting next Tuesday.

High Toynton Re-dedication
High Toynton are holding a re-dedication service on 10th May following the repair work on the church due to the tower collapse. The service will be taken by the Bishop of Grimsby. Food will be available and everyone is welcome. See attached poster for details.
