Hopeman Skatepark

Hopeman Skatepark Community run skate park located in Hopeman, Moray, Scotland The idea for this type of facility was formed during 2003 by Terry & Ann Brown.

One of the most successful projects completed in Hopeman in recent years has been the funding and building of the skate park on the north east corner of the village green. Terry and Ann noted that recreational facilities for the youths of the village was lacking and after discussing with some of them it was decided to form a committee to investigate what could be done. This committee consisted of

Terry & Ann, Mark O’Shane, Fiona Tulloch, Linda Dixon and seven other youth members, and they decided that they would like a skate park. This was quite a daunting task, however, over a very short period of time the committee grew from strength to strength raising large sums of money, designing the layout, forming and developing rules for the club and taking responsibility for all aspects of what was to be done. Terry & Ann wanted to promote a greater understanding between youths and adults preventing this younger generation from being socially excluded. They also wanted to encourage youngsters to be physically active and live a better and healthier lifestyle and of course to be fully responsible for the running of the club, something which the committee and their successors have been very successful at. The park was built in five stages between 2004 and 2008 when it was officially opened and over the years there has been a huge increase in interest from within our community and from all over Scotland. There are now in excess of 1,300 members. Hopeman Community Association and all of the residents are very proud of what they have done. The skate park is still under the ownership of the community who keep the park maintained. All membership money and donations are used in the upkeep of the park.

Thanks to Wayne Hanna at Peter Mitchell and Son for taking time on there day off to weld back the grind rail that we had to split to change the damaged ramp section the other week.

Much appreciated and another job ticked off the to do list.

We plan on closing off the big half pipe soon to carry out the much needed repairs there. Will post when we plan on doing this!!

There was a phone found on the bench next to the new outdoor gym near the skatepark today. Belongs to Reece Mackie I think it said on the screen. If anyone know them can you pass on that it’s handed into the post office.

Evening folks……. Another 5 hour shift at the skatepark today replacing the section with the grind rail attached.

This one was a tricky one for sure and when we dismantled it, pretty much the whole section fell apart.

Bit of thinking and some serious rebuilding with a lot of new sections of timber and we managed to get it rebuilt.

Some securings are not holding due to the condition of the underside and we are aware and trying to come up with a plan for that.

Please note that the sections of grind rail are not welded together yet. I can do a lot of things, but welding is just not possible. There is tape between the sections for now so take care.

The big half is getting worse so please be careful on it. Don’t let your kids slide down it, for sure it will only end with someone getting hurt!! We plan to tackle this soon but this is a huge job!!

We have also had to leave the old sections of ramp next to the bin and will try figure out what to do with that later.

We know there’s still lots to do but note that these repair works are far from easy and we are trying our best!!!

We’re fairly on it this weekend! Another broken section repaired.

Good help again from the boys and big thanks to Gerry McAllister for initially helping with some grinding but also coming back after I managed to have a fall out with a Stanley knife and my arm. My arm unfortunately lost 😂😂

Blood sweat and tears definitely the case on this repair and currently in A and E waiting to see if I need a stitch or two:)

Not to worry though, ma boys patched me up to allow us to finish the repair before heading to Elgin😂😂

Another repair complete. This section of ramp has been damaged for many years and slowly worsened with time. Such repairs are not so straight forward and this one took around 5 hours to complete.

Help from my 3 boys was well received!!!

We continue to try and keep this great skatepark going.

We have several more repairs to complete for this phase and then will be looking to see what’s next!!

On completion, Rosie our pup gave it the full inspection and sign off!!

Some young girl has decided to kick in the small shelter next to the skatepark about an hour ago.
Causing damage.

Volunteers try and maintain items such as the skatepark and the shelter for all to use and unfortunately the minority such as this make us wonder why we bother!

Any parents who know there young daughters are in Hopeman tonight, maybe picking them up to take them home around now. Have a word and see if they know anything about this.

Police have been informed and footage will be passed over to them. Hopefully they can identify who it was.

Reminder folks, we are a community run skatepark with ZERO funds/ support from the council.

This means that all upkeep of the park is down to the community to fund and pay for.

The memberships are needed for insurance purposes and non members are not covered.

Memberships have only gone up £5 in over 20 years!!! There lifetime memberships at a cost of £15 for a single membership and £20 for a family!!

All money taken in from memberships goes straight back into the park!! Can collect and submit your membership forms at the post office or costcutter.

If needed, PM the page and can email you one!!

Another rebuild of the internals of the top part of the big half pipe. Plenty strengthening in there now:)

Hope to replace a few of the broken top sections in the coming weeks.

Big thanks to Stevie Campbell for offering a hand, saved me a massive amount of climbing on and out for the repair.

A constant battle keeping on top of things here but something we have to do!!
