š The Heart of wHoo Cares
Every year, wHoo Cares is held together by something stronger than any programme, service, or schedule ā the kindness of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In 2025, we created a recognition scheme not just to hand out certificates, but to honour the love, time, and humanity our volunteers pour into our community.
When a volunteer stands up at an event to receive their award, you can see it ā the pride, the surprise, the emotion rising in their chest. Some are choked up. Some canāt quite believe that something they do so quietly, so humbly, could mean so much.
But it does. It means everything.
Volunteering isnāt only about helping others. Itās about discovering parts of yourself you didnāt know were there ā courage, patience, humour, resilience, tenderness. Itās about finding connection in unexpected places. Itās about giving someone a reason to smile on a day when they thought they had none.
š Our Volunteer Awards ā and the Hearts Behind Them
ā Activity Ace
These volunteers are the spark that turns a simple room into a place of belonging. They set up tables, decorate halls, pour tea, call bingo numbers, serve food, greet partners with warmth, and fill every corner with laughter. They donāt just help run activities ā they make people feel welcome, seen, and safe.
š Ruler of the Road
Our drivers carry more than passengers. They carry stories, worries, hopes, and the quiet relief of someone who knows theyāre not alone. Whether itās medical transport, group outings, or wHoo Cares After Dark, they give people the freedom to stay connected to the world.
šļø First Class Chaperone
These volunteers turn every journey into a moment of companionship. They help people on and off the minibus, offer reassurance, share jokes, and make even the longest trips feel warm and safe. For many partners, these outings are the highlight of their week ā and thatās because of the chaperones who make them feel cared for.
āļø Champion of Chat
A weekly phone call may seem small ā but for some, it is a lifeline. These volunteers talk, listen, laugh, and sometimes sit with someoneās silence. They bring comfort to those who canāt leave their homes, who feel anxious, or who simply need a friendly voice to remind them that the world hasnāt forgotten them.
š” Befriending Boss
These volunteers step into peopleās homes and become part of their lives. They share stories, memories, cups of tea, and sometimes tears. They witness the rawness of life ā grief, loneliness, joy, resilience ā and they meet it with compassion. For many partners, this is the only visit that isnāt rushed, clinical, or taskāfocused. It is human to human. Heart to heart.
š A Final Thank You
To every volunteer ā whether you give an hour a week or many hours more ā you change lives. You bring zest, laughter, warmth, and dignity into homes and hearts. You remind people that they matter. You make our community feel alive.
You are the reason wHoo Cares is not just a service, but a family.
Thank you ā for your time, your kindness, your patience, your humour, your love. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for caring. Thank you for being the light in someoneās darkest week.
