Born on December 16, 1933, in our very own town of Holywell, Jennifer Toye came from a family deeply rooted in music and theatre. Her mother, Eleanor Toye, was a professional singer, and her uncle, the legendary Francis Toye, was a renowned composer and conductor. With such a musical heritage, it was no surprise that Jennifer would follow in the family footsteps, forging her own remarkable path in the operatic world.

The Early Years
Raised in Holywell, Jennifer was surrounded by the beauty of music from a young age. Her natural talent blossomed early, and her familial connections within the musical world set the stage for a career filled with outstanding performances. Adopting her mother’s maiden name, Toye, as her stage name, Jennifer honored the rich musical legacy of her uncles, Francis and Geoffrey Toye, further solidifying her place in the world of music.

This striking tribute, featured in the mock-up next to the Holywell Community Museum, perfectly captures the essence of the beloved playwright and actor from our town.

A huge thank you to David for sharing his extraordinary talent to help celebrate and honor our community’s rich heritage. His dedication to this project has been incredible, and it’s clear that people absolutely adore his work!

We are so proud to shine a spotlight on Dorothy Miles, a trailblazing BSL poet who hails from our very own Holywell! 🎉 Dorothy’s groundbreaking work in British Sign Language (BSL) poetry has made her an iconic figure in the Deaf community and beyond, earning her a place in history as one of the first poets to bring BSL into the world of literature and performance.

A true pioneer, Dorothy's performances combine the beauty of sign language with the power of poetry, creating an art form that speaks to the heart and soul of every audience. Her incredible ability to convey emotion and meaning through BSL has earned her a well-deserved place among the most influential figures in the field.

Dorothy’s achievements include performing at renowned festivals and events, as well as receiving numerous accolades for her contributions to Deaf culture and the arts. Her work has brought greater visibility to BSL and helped bridge the gap between Deaf and hearing communities, opening doors for others to follow in her footsteps.

Jonathan’s career took flight after training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), but it’s his early years in Holywell that fueled his passion for the arts. His dedication and talent have since earned him recognition as one of the most distinguished actors in both theatre and film.

His extensive theatre credits include playing the iconic roles of the Engineer in Miss Saigon (for which he won Olivier and Tony Awards), and Fagin in Oliver! on the West End. His career has spanned decades, with unforgettable performances in productions such as The Merchant of Venice (RSC), The Homecoming (National Theatre), and The Father (Broadway and UK Tour).
