Unfortunately the weather once again was against us. Today we split up into two groups and learnt about wind direction and points of sailing starting off in the class room then putting it into practice on a pico. We ended the session with a quick visit see the RNLI Holyhead inshore lifeboat station next door.

The weather was a little bit on the windy side for us to take the young oppies safely out sailing today. Instead they all had a go at driving two of the power boats we have. They were Split into two groups one group started in the rib a fast speed boat and one in the club launch a slower boat. They also brushed up on their rope work and parts of a boat while they waited for their turn to steer these powerboats before the two groups swapped over.
The assistant instructors took the opportunity to get some further experience sailing in the pico’s under the watchful eye of our safety boat.

Due to a shortage of qualified instructors today due to illness and work commitment, so our session was held ashore. The group was split into two the oppies which are the new intake this season and the toppers the returning group from last year. During today’s session both groups went through the process of how to right a capsized boat and how to tie knots (Bends and Hutches) which they will use, it was a great session in which our assistant sailing instructors also took the opportunity to pass on their sailing knowledge to the young Sailors.

We welcomed back some of last year’s group and it’s great to see and meet the new members.
For the first session we stayed ashore explained and demonstrated how to rig the boats correctly and how they are all stored and maintained.

This morning the Holyhead young Optimists got together for their awards presentation for last season’s sailing.
We started of with some party games followed by a lovely buffet. After everyone was fed and watered we held a presentation of certificates which were presented by the Commodore of Holyhead Sailing Club. We are all looking forward to starting again this season let’s hope for fair winds and weather.

A bit breezy once again this morning for our young Sailors so plan B capsize drills on the trooper and Optimist under the watchful eye of our safety boat crew, some even tried their hands at a dry capsize, we finished off with some supervised fun in the water.

A few photos from the last two Saturdays. Two weeks ago we had perfect conditions for our training session some started to sail upwind. Today was too windy so we stayed ashore and the young oppies were taught some bends and hitches (knots) and gybing tiller drills.
