🏊‍♂️ Nothing beats a cooling dip on a hot day, but swimming in rivers comes with risks. If you're taking the plunge this week, follow these simple steps to help you stay safe.

Before you get in, check:

🌊 Flow – even gentle-looking rivers can have strong currents, so test it with a leaf
📏 Depth – what looks shallow can drop off suddenly
🌡️ Temperature – cold water shock is possible, even on warm days
💩 Water quality – use our sewage map for recent spills and watch for blue-green algae

Stay safe while swimming:

🚫 Don’t dive – rocks and debris can shift beneath the surface
🚤 Keep an eye out for boats – stay visible and aware
🍹 Stay sober – alcohol and drugs affect judgement and swimming ability
🚪 Plan your exit – make sure there’s an easy way out
🏊‍♂️ Don’t swim alone – go with a friend, or let someone know your plans

Our rivers are great places to cool off and enjoy nature, just take a moment to stay safe around the water.

Take a look at our recent footage from the leaky barriers and woody material added to Thompson stream as part of a wider water-holding and habitat enhancement project.

These features don’t just slow the flow of water and help filter sediment from the watercourse – they also double up as mini adventure playgrounds for wildlife, offering places to hop across, pause for a rest and tuck themselves out of sight.

We monitor our habitat work using trail cameras, helping us capture glimpses of the wildlife that moves into new or enhanced rivers and wetlands. Usually, low batteries or bad weather are to blame for missing footage, but this time, a very curious Highland cow was the culprit! 📹

Highland cattle are often used as conservation grazers, helping to manage vigorous vegetation and make space for ground-nesting birds without the use of machinery. Clearly, our camera was no match for this one’s snooping nose! 🐂 🌿

Did you know male sedge warblers never sing the same song twice, constantly expanding their repertoire to attract a mate? 🐦🎶

Sunny days wandering through wetlands, listening to their songs drifting from the reeds, are one of the best ways to take a breath and appreciate the little lives moving into these revived habitats.

So, turn up your sound and enjoy one of our most vocally talented warm-weather visitors. 🔊

Six months ago, we restored eight “ghost” pingo ponds near Thompson Common, making space for nature and improving water storage. 💦

Now, we’re conducting a series of monitoring surveys to see which species move into the pingos - including amphibian, aquatic plant and bird surveys. Our hope is that pool frogs – the UK’s rarest amphibian – will eventually colonise the site. 🐸 🐦

Amazingly, smooth newts have already arrived, laying their eggs on the marginal water mint. It's a promising early sign that life is returning to these once-lost habitats.
