Good Evening to all our members and supporters. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Monday just gone, 8 June, was a great success for our RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club, with 27 regular members and 2 guests attending as we held our day in conjunction with 'The Eden Project's Big Lunch, a Nationwide Celebration of Friendship and Volunteering.'

Representing the Royal Voluntary Service, Steve and Melissa were our guests, and Melissa took a lot of fantastic photos of the day, 3 of them are posted up with this thread; rather than post up a lot of photos at once, we are going to post them up over the next week or two. So just 3 photos tonight; one of David (welcome back, David), Sue, Mavis, Maureen, and Catherine, all looking happy, of course ๐Ÿ˜ƒ; and two photos of Lynn, Bruce, Maurice, and Linda, with Barbara and June in the background. These two pics go together, because Melissa caught the moment perfectly, and that moment was when Linda won the bingo ๐Ÿ˜„; you can see the happiness and enjoyment of the moment of when Linda won big ๐Ÿ˜„; these three photos say more than any words can about the RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘ More photos in a few days.

Melissa has penned a few words about the day, and we are more than happy to share her words here. Many thanks to Steve, and to Melissa, for coming to Holmfirth and joining us at our Lunch Club.

โ€˜People from across Holmfirth came together at the RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club on Monday 8 June to celebrate community, connection and volunteering as part of The Big Lunch and The Big Help Out weekend 2026.
Hosted at The Civic, Holmfirth, visitors enjoyed a three-course meal of leek and potato soup, roast chicken and vegetables, and club favourite banana split for dessert. There was also the opportunity to take part in a tombola featuring generously gifted prizes, and everyone enjoyed a quiz, card bingo and games of โ€˜Play Your Cards Rightโ€™. ๐Ÿ™‚
The event brought local people together in a welcoming social space to enjoy food, fun and conversation, and everyone left with a home-made Big Lunch cup-cake, baked and decorated by one of the clubโ€™s volunteers.
The event in Holmfirth was one of multiple gatherings hosted by the RVS between 5 โ€“ 8 June as part of the UK-wide Big Lunch and Big Help Out weekend inspiring more community volunteering, and celebrating the power of community connection.

Steve Amos, Director of Health & Community at the Royal Voluntary Service, said:
'It was wonderful to see so many people join us for our Holmfirth Big Lunch. Events like this are a fantastic way to help people feel more connected to their local community, while creating opportunities for friendship, conversation and support.
Weโ€™d like to thank everyone who joined us for lunch, and of course all the volunteers who helped make the day such a success, from cooking a delicious meal to being the most brilliant bingo callers and cup-cake decorators.' โ€™

Thanks, Melissa. ๐Ÿ‘

Great to be back at The Civic, Holmfirth for our RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club after last week's Bank Holiday Monday off, and it's fair to say this Monday's club, held two days ago, was one of the most enjoyable we have ever had! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

24 very happy members, all enjoying their friendships, their chatter, and sharing their laughter. ๐Ÿ˜„

We had a tie in the quiz, two teams scoring 7 out of 10, with another two teams just behind them on 6 n half ๐Ÿ˜„; a classic battle, with all seven teams correctly stating Sir Winston Churchill as one of our greatest Britons (born in 1874, died in 1965), all also answered correctly that Bamforths of Holmfirth was the home of 'the saucy postcard', but none got Middle of the Road as the group who sang the Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep ๐Ÿค song back in 1971, which sold ten million copies! ๐Ÿค

After the second bingo session, with Beverley back in the chair calling the numbers ๐Ÿ˜ƒ, we finally had a winner of Play Your Cards Right, with Barbara calling all the higher and lower cards correctly, to double her loadsamoney bingo winnings...๐Ÿ˜„

Hope you all like these two photos, showing Stephne, Robert & Karen, and June & Maurice, respectively, lounging on the famous Bill 'Compo' Owen bench situated just inside Holmfirth Civic Hall. All five have attended just about every week since we started last September, and are very popular and valued members. ๐Ÿ‘

More photos of our members next week, and details of next week's menu to be posted up shortly, watch out for it!

See you all next Monday 8 June. ๐Ÿ™‚

Good Evening to all our members and supporters, hope you have all had a good Bank Holiday week just gone, and are looking forward to being back at The Civic, Holmfirth this Monday for our RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club; as always, our team of volunteers is looking forward to seeing you all. ๐Ÿ˜€

We have now held 30 Lunch Clubs, our first one being back in September last year, when we had 11 members attending. Very pleasing to know that over the 30 Mondays, our average attendance is now 21, with our last Monday (18 May) we had 23 good people enjoying themselves at the historic Civic Hall in Holmfirth. The maximum attendance we could have is 30, and we are certain that will happen soon. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

On the menu this Monday 1 June:
Main: Corned Beef Hash with Yorkshire Puddings
Pudding: Lemon and Ginger Cheesecake topped with Strawberries
Monday: 11.00am to 1.15pm

After having the previous Monday off (Bank holiday) it was great to be back with all our members at our RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club held at The Civic, Holmfirth on Monday 11th May. When members tell us (as one did) that they missed it the week before, then you know you have a group of happy members. ๐Ÿ˜€

With 21 attending, we ran our quick-fire 10 question quiz, had a couple of games of bingo, and again played a very brief couple of games of Play Your Cards Right (no winners again ๐Ÿ˜„).
We know we have had a few of our members unable to attend recently; to all of you, you are missed, and we look forward to seeing you back with us very soon. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

With the hugely popular Holmfirth Artweek coming to Holmfirth in July, we have plans in place to take our club to an alternative venue for 3 weeks around that time, which is the length of time we will be unable to be at Holmfirth Civic Hall. Great to hear that all available rooms at Holmfirth Civic Hall are fully booked for Holmfirth Artweek, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

To anyone reading this who may be interested in sponsoring our RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club, we would be delighted to hear from you - please contact Diane (details below).

On the menu for Monday 18 May:
Main: Home-made Cottage Pie, with seasonal vegetables
Pudding: varies from week to week
Monday: 11.00am to 1.15pm

Hello to All the members and supporters of our RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club, held every Monday at the fine venue that is The Civic, Holmfirth. ๐Ÿ™‚

The last couple of Mondays (April 20 and 27) have been well attended, as always, with 20 and 21 members attending, respectively. We knew in advance (because said members always let us know) that some of our regulars were unavailable for these two Mondays, so it's just a matter of time before we get 30 members in attendance, which will be a sell-out! ๐Ÿ˜„

On both these Mondays, we included a Brucie bonus...yep, we had a bash at Play Your Cards Right, complete with our own Dolly Dealers (see Serena on the photo). ๐Ÿ˜ƒ So whoever won a game of Bingo, got the chance to double their money with a Brucie bonus! But...not one winner got past the first line! But even so, it went down very well - and one day, one lucky member will win big! ๐Ÿ˜„

The AGM was held at the end of the club, it was attended by our committee, volunteers and members; we discussed the general running of the club, finances and upcoming events; after 6 months our little club has become a big success. This was well received by all. ๐Ÿ‘

Two days ago, the steak pie went down very well, as always, and so did (for the first time) the delicious banana split as the dessert. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ See the photo of the banana split, an all round effort by our volunteer team; also, there are pics of four of our volunteers, and of regulars Diane and Roger, photos taken outside The Civic, Holmfirth. ๐Ÿ™‚

Because it is a Bank Holiday Monday next week, Holmfirth Civic Hall is closed, so we will be back on Monday 11 May, and as always, we look forward to seeing everyone then. ๐Ÿ‘

Morning All, hope you are all well, and looking forward to being at the RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club tomorrow, at The Civic, Holmfirth. ๐Ÿ˜€

Last Monday, Diane was given a lovely card from Sue Walker, one of our regular members, which was very much appreciated; it means a great deal to Diane and all the team of volunteers we have on a Monday, that everyone has a good time on Monday with us, enjoying tasty home-made food, with plenty of laughter and chatter with friends. Thanks, Sue. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

In last week's quiz, there was a question about famed opera singer Sir Willard White, who performed a sell out concert at Holmfirth Civic Hall on Sunday 12 April; he was joined by the New Mill Male Voice Choir. One of the members of the choir is also one of our members, so a round of applause was given to Mr. Laurence Park, led by, and after a few words from, the manager of Holmfirth Civic Hall, Dawn Whiteley, who also happens to be a big supporter of New Mill Male Voice Choir. Keep on singing, Laurence, always a pleasure to see you every Monday. ๐Ÿ˜€

Tomorrow, at 1.15pm, as we said last Monday, we will be having our AGM at Holmfirth Civic Hall, and all volunteers and members are more than welcome to attend. ๐Ÿ‘

On the menu for tomorrow Monday 20 April:
Main: Roast chicken, potatoes, seasonal vegetables
Pudding: varies from week to week
Monday: 11.00am to 1.15pm
ยฃ6pp (two courses + raffle ticket)

From all the volunteers here at the RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club, a very Happy Easter to all our members and supporters ๐Ÿ˜€

Over the last six months we have now held 25 Monday Lunch Clubs, with 25 attending last Monday, 30 March.
From that very first Monday last September, with 11 members attending, to averaging more than double that this year, all of us involved are delighted the way our Club has developed ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

We thank all our members for their company, and hope you all continue to attend on a regular basis - as always, last Monday was full of chit-chat and laughter, great to see and hear ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Here's three very happy photos from last Monday, featuring a number of our regulars; Joan, Jennifer, and Sue; Sandra and Sheila; and Joan with a number of members in the background, all enjoying themselves, with volunteers Beverley and Jude further in the background in charge of the bingo ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Please note, that Holmfirth Civic Hall is closed tomorrow (Easter Monday), so our next Lunch Club will be on Monday 13 April

On the menu for Monday 13 April:
Main: Cottage Pie with seasonal vegetables
Pudding: varies from week to week
Plenty of tea and coffee too
Monday: 11.00am to 1.15pm
ยฃ6pp (two courses + raffle ticket)

Another superb day yesterday 23 March at the RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club at Holmfirth Civic Hall. We knew in advance that a few of our regulars would be missing yesterday (hopefully all back next week ๐Ÿ˜€), yet even so, we still had 21 attending yesterday, including a couple of new members who were, of course, made very welcome. Sausage and mash yesterday, enjoyed by all! ๐Ÿ‘

In the 'fun' quiz we hold every Monday, a tip of the hat to Barbara and Colin, who hit the perfect score of 10 out of 10 - very impressive - and they join a small, yet very illustrious, list of winners to achieve the maximum score! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜„
One of the questions in the quiz was about The Beatles Complete, a tribute band who were in concert at The Civic, Holmfirth on Saturday 21 March - Michael and Diane attended that concert, and they were just brilliant! It was a sell out, and the young lads were only aged between 19 and 23! If you get the chance, make sure you see them - well done to Dawn and Michelle at The Civic, Holmfirth for booking them, and hopefully they will be back.

Holmfirth Civic Hall isn't just the home for our RVS Club, there are regular tribute gigs, dances, opera concerts, and band nights, all in the main concert hall, and weekly classes for such as Pilates and Zumba take place too - and every Friday there is a coffee / tea morning supporting various charities - so please check out what is on at the fabulous venue that is the historic Holmfirth Civic Hall. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Next Monday will be our 25th Monday, effectively a 6 month anniversary for our Royal Voluntary Service Lunch Club, and there's no doubt that all of us involved as volunteers are so happy that we are now well established, and it is so pleasing that all the members we have attending enjoy themselves, and their meals, not to mention their cuppas. ๐Ÿซ–โ˜•๏ธ

On the menu next Monday 30 March:
Main: Corned beef hash, Yorkshire pudding & seasonal vegetables
Pudding: varies from week to week
11.00am to 1.15pm

At last Monday's RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club at The Civic, Holmfirth, members not only enjoyed their meal (steak pie and veg, arguably the favourite main meal on our rotating menu ๐Ÿ˜€), they also enjoyed some complimentary cakes to go with their cuppas, courtesy of Wiltshire Farm Foods, from Halifax. Along with these treats, all our members were given a company magazine with discount vouchers to order from their magazine, as shown on this photo of Susan, one of our lovely members who attends regularly. ๐Ÿ˜€
Many thanks to Samantha of Wiltshire Farm Foods for coming along to see everyone.๐Ÿ‘

Last Monday saw another great turn-out of 25 members, all enjoying themselves in a very chatty and sociable environment. ๐Ÿ˜„

On the menu for tomorrow:
Main: Sausage and Mash, with seasonal vegetables
Pudding: Apple Crumble with Custard
Monday: 11.00am to 1.15pm
