We support people in and around the Holme Valley through social groups, activities, and volunteering opportunities that bring the community together. Our Holmfirth Community Lunch Club is at the heart of what we do — offering friendship, good food, and a warm welcome. Over time, we hope to expand and create more community groups across the Holme Valley to reduce loneliness and support local wellbeing.

Hello to all our RVS Holme Valley members and supporters

Over the last 12 months, our Monday Lunch Club held at The Civic, Holmfirth has become a great success, to the stage that we are full just about every week now; this is all thanks to our wonderful members, and to our superb team of volunteers, and as a volunteer, it is a privilege to be part of it 😃

On Monday, Parish Cllr Rob Butler paid us a visit, and spent time talking to all our members on all tables; he listened, and he took notes on what he can do for them in his role as a Parish Councillor - many thanks to Cllr Butler for calling in, and to Holme Valley Parish Council for the financial support they have given our Monday Club 👍

Also two days ago, we had a first, and that was a three way tie on our quiz! So well done to The End Table, to The Inclings, and to Babs' team, all three teams have very clever players among them, all on the ball whether regarding answering questions on history, sport, or comedy, and all answered Basil, Sybil, and Manuel on the Fawlty Towers question 😆

Over the last few weeks, we have also been holding Clubs in Meltham, at Meltham Methodist Church, on Tuesdays 10.30am to 12.30pm, and on Fridays 10am to 12noon at St Paul’s Hall Shepley. These are not Lunch Clubs, these clubs are Movement and Games Clubs, for members to get actively involved in light, fun exercise, to help their movement, mobility and wellbeing, then to enjoy a cup of tea / coffee with biscuits and the odd bun ☕️🍪🍰, to then play games such as dominoes, triominoes, scrabble, curling, boccia (a form of indoor bowling), and various other games purely and simply to have a bit of fun in good company 😃

The numbers are slowly going up attendance wise for both clubs; yesterday at Meltham we had 11 members there with 4 volunteers, and on Fridays we have had up to a dozen there at Shepley. We welcome all, so if you are reading this and wish to come along to Meltham on Tuesdays or to Shepley on Fridays, please do so, and bring a friend, the more the merrier! 😃 Our new Meltham and Shepley groups are all about bringing people together, making connections and having somewhere friendly to go each week. You don’t need to know anyone before you come, either come along on your own, with a friend or with a family member - help us spread the word 😀

Big thanks to Meltham Town Council, The Crossroads Centre in Meltham, and to the Two Valleys Deli Sandwich Shop on Green End Road in Meltham for their fantastic financial support which has enabled us to get the Meltham Club up and running 👍

Good Evening to all RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club members and supporters 😀

As promised a few days ago, here's some more photos taken from our first anniversary day of a couple of weeks ago 👍

The quiz will be on again tomorrow, always competitive, and great fun, as is the bingo. Tomorrow, we are very close to being fully booked with 31 good people booked in, at a big push we could squeeze another couple in but fair to say we shall be very busy, with a great atmosphere as always! What's not to love? 😀

Hello to all RVS Holmfirth members and volunteers 🙂

Humble apologies to all as ye writer has been off line for a month or so, and there are a few threads and photos that simply must be posted up in an effort to bring you all up to date 🙂

Our Monday club, a beacon of goodness for all who attend and volunteer, goes from strength to strength; over the last few Mondays our numbers have been 27, 31, 30, 24, and yesterday, back to 30. The warm and cosy venue we have at The Civic, Holmfirth can seat 32, and it's fair to say, the atmosphere that is generated every Monday is so full of friendly chatter, with much laughter, that it's quite simply wonderful to hear and to be part of 😄

On Monday September 28, we celebrated our first anniversary; 30 members sat down to enjoy a three course meal of soup / juice, roast loin of pork with fresh vegetables, followed by home made dessert. Suffice to say, the food went down well! 😄 All the volunteer team played their part in making all 3 courses as delicious as possible; it was home made soup, and home made dessert, with a special nod of appreciation to Hinchliffe's Farm Shop in Netherton, Britain Oldest Farm Shop 😄

In addition to the scrumptious food, we booked an outstanding singer / actress called Karen Clegg, who was hugely entertaining, and went down a storm with all our members, singing many hits from musicals over the years, while brilliantly involving her audience, encouraging them all to join in with her 😃

It was an important mile-stone for us all, celebrating our first anniversary. Over the last 12 months, we are so delighted that just about everyone who has attended over that time, has been back again and again, it really does mean a lot to get that support 👍

Quite a number of photographs were taken on the day; thankfully it was a very pleasant day, and the outside of Holmfirth Civic Hall is great as backdrop to a photo, as you will see. Now the photos on this thread are only some of the photos taken, and feature 14 of our members, we have more than double that, and more photos will follow on other threads! The happy members featured on the photos are Bruce, Lynn, Maurice, June, Joan, Colin, Sue, Sue, Stephne, Karen, Robert, Jennifer, Colin, and Sue. These photos speak for themselves, hope you all like 'em!

🎉💜 ONE YEAR OF FRIENDSHIP, LAUGHTER & COMMUNITY! 💜🎉

On Monday 28th September, our club turns ONE! 🎂

What started 12 months ago as a brand-new RVS community club has grown into something we are incredibly proud of – a busy, welcoming place filled with conversation, laughter, friendship and plenty of cups of tea! ☕💜

Over the past year we’ve played countless games of bingo, tested our brains with quizzes, enjoyed activities together and, most importantly, watched new friendships form.

To celebrate our first birthday, we’re doing things a little differently! 🥳

🍽️ A special three-course meal
🎶 Live entertainment instead of our usual quiz and bingo
🎂 And plenty of birthday celebrations!

We’re keeping a little bit of the day a surprise… 👀🎶

We’re incredibly proud that our club has become so popular, but none of it would be possible without our fantastic members and wonderful volunteers who turn up, get involved and make the club what it is every week.

We’re at The Civic, Holmfirth, this morning for the Coffee Morning, so if you’re nearby, pop in and have a chat with us! 👋

We’re here spreading the word about the new RVS community groups we’ve been setting up across the Holme Valley and Kirkburton areas – friendly, welcoming spaces where local people can get together, enjoy activities, have a cuppa and make new connections. ☕🎲🥌

💜 We’re also looking for new volunteers!

Could you spare a little time to help at one of our clubs?
You could help welcome members, make teas and coffees, join in with games and activities, or simply be there for a chat and some company. You don’t need any special experience – just a friendly face and a willingness to get involved.

Good Morning to all RVS Holmfirth members and volunteers 🙂

Very much looking forward to tomorrow, Monday 7 September; we are back at our home of The Civic, Holmfirth for our RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club after last Monday's Bank Holiday, our home of nearly 12 months now 🙂

One of our regular members said, after the last Bank Holiday break we had, that he was very happy to be back, and that he missed coming the week of that bank holiday, which says it all, and no doubt we will all be having another very happy, friendly, and enjoyable Monday tomorrow 😀

On tomorrow's menu:
Main: Chicken, ham, and leek pie, with seasonal vegetables
Pudding: varies from week to week
Monday: 11.00am to 1.15pm
£6 per person (two courses + raffle ticket) with plenty of cups of tea / coffee

Good Morning to all RVS Holmfirth members and volunteers 🙂

A record breaking turn-out was had at the Holmfirth Lunch Club on Monday 24 August, with 30 members attending, the most we have ever had at The Civic, Holmfirth; the actual reception room we use at Holmfirth Civic Hall is cosy, warm, welcoming, and very popular, no doubt about that! It's a perfect area for what we do. The members love it, and when it's full, it's as noisy as a school dining hall! 😃 Over the last few weeks, and because we have a number of people on our waiting list, we have looked in to moving upstairs at the venue, but after a lot of talking between our volunteer team, and with taking on board the views of the members, the decision was taken to stay as we are, and when Diane told everybody this on Monday, there were cheers and applause, so safe to say it was a popular decision! 👍

On Monday, as usual we held a quiz, and this time is was a comedy quiz, 'ooh, you are awful, but I like you 😄' (that's an in-joke, look it up 😆) and two teams got all the 10 questions correct! We have some very clever people taking part in our quizzes! 😄 Far better and a lot more fun to have a quiz that the teams can often or nearly get all the answers correct, or maybe the quiz-master should get his mastermind quiz book out? Er, no to that! Very well done to both teams 👍

Because we were all so busy on Monday, none of the volunteer team managed to take any photos, so ye writer thought why not use the attached photo with this thread, as this pic was taken just last month, and it's a lovely photo of one of our members, Joan, with one of our volunteer team, Michael. Along with her husband Richard, Joan was there at our first ever lunch on September 29 2025, and has hardly missed a Monday since. All our volunteers consider it an honour and a pleasure to be involved every Monday, and the fact we are successful is a bonus; our members love attending, catching up with friends, and enjoying the meals we prepare for them. Long May It Continue! It's a wonderful photo that in one image says a great deal about our club 😃

With it being a Bank Holiday Monday next week, Holmfirth Civic Hall will be closed, so we will be back on Monday 7 September

A wonderful day was held on Monday 10th August at the RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club. I kid thee not, the chit chat was soooo loud, with friends chatting away, having a good chin-wag and a laugh, and, in a nutshell, just enjoying themselves 😀

With 26 regulars attending this week, it really is a privilege to be a volunteer at our club, and I know that ye writer speaks for all the volunteers

This Monday, everyone was treated to chicken and leek pie and veg, followed by delicious freshly-made meringue, with strawberries and cream - suffice to say, there was nothing left! 😄

The quick-fire 10 question quiz went down very well, with the winning team of no name getting all 10 questions correct. Bruce's Brainy Bunch is a good team name though. 😃 And it must be said that the comedic question about Ken Dodd and his Diddymen went down a storm 😄. Message to quizmaster...make the questions harder...message from the quizmaster, there's no fun in that!! 😃

This photo was taken just before our members started to arrive, and features five of our volunteer team; Caroline, Alexandra, Jude, Diane, and Margaret. Like all our volunteers, they love being involved

Good afternoon to all RVS Holmfirth Lunch Club members and supporters 🙂

Looking forward to this Monday's Lunch Club at The Civic, Holmfirth; this will be our 40th Monday, with our first anniversary coming up next month. That very first Monday on 29 September last year, we only had 11 members attending, now we regularly have 26 to 29 attending, and we are very happy about that! 😀

Last Monday we had our youngest volunteer, Alexandra, doing the dolly-dealing on Play Your Cards Right, and she was certainly a lucky charm for Barbara, as Barbara called every card correctly and won a bonus prize! That doesn't happen every week! 😀 Great job, Alexandra, Barbara says you can turn the cards over every week! 😄

This coming Monday, there will be no 10 question-quickfire-quiz, instead, we will be having an informal Committee / Members meeting, and all there are welcome to chip in / comment. We would love to kick this off around 11.15am, that would give us 45 minutes to discuss things, so if you are booked in for this Monday, please try to arrive no later than 11.10am if possible. If any member wishes to add an item to the agenda, please send us a PM by 6pm tomorrow 👍
