Hockley & Hawkwell Day Centre

Over the last year or so Hearing Help Essex have provided a wonderful mobile clinic to the elderly clients of the Day Centre to help with their hearing aids and problems, saving them having to travel to Southend Hospital.

We heard yesterday that this service is being cut by the NHS as they can no longer fund it.

This was a lifeline for many who, are not able to attend the hospital without a costly taxi service or if they drive are usually unable to secure a parking space.

We were delighted today to unveil a plaque commemorating the original founders of the Hockley & Hawkwell Day Centre.

The plaque was unveiled by Sally White and Brian Adkins (daughter and husband of Joy Adkins, MBE) and Margaret Robertson (daughter of Iris Reason, MBE). Also recognised was Rochford District Council who originally donated the land on which the Day Centre stands.

We also welcomed Councillor Jo Mcpherson who we were delighted could attend the unveiling.

A fitting reminder of the hard work 37 years ago that went into creating the Centre that has developed into a well used and much loved facility.

This week began in a most disastrous fashion when the clutch on our minibus packed up. Over 100 clients each week depend upon our minibus to collect them from their home to bring them to the Centre and take them home again.

Out of disaster stepped two incredible acts of kindness.

Firstly, Nick Ridley Johnson Green of NRG Landscaping Services Limited offered us the use of his minibus that is currently not being used. This plan was only thwarted by the cost of insurance.

Secondly, Eddies Cars, a local taxi firm, stepped up to help us in any way they could with their minibus. This proved to be a fantastic arrangement and we cannot thank them enough for their kindness.

These offers remind us that there are truly kind and thoughtful people around that want to help others wherever possible.

We just wanted to say what a fantastic community we have in this area. The response to the earlier post request has been amazing and we have already had over 150 confirmed nominations to the Benefact draw. Plenty of time to vote if you missed it. Additionally, we have received direct donations from:

- our wonderful local litter pickers who do the most amazing job even when it’s raining.
