We're at the Hitchin Volunteer Fair today in Hitchin town centre.

We'll be here to talk about volunteering with Staying Connected - but there are about 40 other organisations here to chat to and get involved in community life!

“I’m too old for this.”
“It’s probably just me.”

We hear these a lot — and then we watch people quietly prove themselves wrong. Figuring something out, asking a question, trying again. Most of the challenge isn’t age — it’s confidence, and how things have been introduced.

One of the biggest shifts happens when someone realises they’re not the only one. People come to a session worrying they’ll be the only one struggling — then hear someone else ask the exact same question. And another. And another. That simple moment can change everything.

Learning later in life doesn’t make it harder. It just means taking your time, asking questions, and building confidence step by step.

👉 Go at your pace.

👉 If you’ve been putting it off, come see us — you won’t be the only one.

“I should know this by now.”
“I’ve been meaning to sort this for a while…”
“I’m not very good with technology.”

These are things we hear almost every week in our sessions — quietly, sometimes apologetically.

The reality is, most people we support weren’t ever shown this stuff properly. They didn’t use it at work. It wasn’t part of daily life. And then suddenly everything moved online. Feeling like you’ve missed something is completely normal. You haven’t. You’ve just not had the chance to learn it yet.

Many people start with small steps — just one thing they want to understand, like sending a message, checking emails, or using their phone more confidently. And what tends to surprise them is how quickly things start to click once they sit down calmly and go through it.

It’s rarely about ability. It’s usually confidence, familiarity, and having someone explain things without rushing or jargon. Most people can do far more than they expect — with the right support.

👉 Pick one small thing to focus on feeling more confident about this week. That’s enough to start.

Celebrating our Digital Champions

Staying Connected wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our volunteers — our Digital Champions.

Every week, they’re out in the community offering patient, friendly support to people who want to feel more confident using technology. Whether it’s helping someone send their first email, access online services, or simply feel less overwhelmed by their phone, their impact is real and immediate.

What makes our volunteers special isn’t just their digital know-how — it’s their kindness, encouragement, and willingness to answer any questions with enthusiasm, and patience.

You’ll find them in community groups with Caring Herts CIC, and local sessions across North Hertfordshire and Stevenage, creating welcoming spaces where people can learn at their own pace.

To all our Digital Champions: thank you. Your time, energy, and care are what make Staying Connected what it is.

If you’ve met one of our volunteers at a session, we’d love to hear about your experience.

Hello — I’m Jilly, Project Lead for Staying Connected in North Hertfordshire.

If you’ve seen us at community groups or local sessions recently, I’m the one coordinating the project behind the scenes — and often delivering sessions out in the community too.

My role is to develop and grow Staying Connected across North Hertfordshire and Stevenage, making sure people can access practical, local support to feel more confident using technology.

That includes:

• running and organising community sessions

• supporting people 1:1

• developing scam awareness talks

• recruiting and supporting our Digital Champions

A lot of the work happens in everyday settings — Caring Herts CIC Hubs, and community coffee mornings — helping people with things like using their phone, getting online, or understanding how to stay safe.

If you’ve come along to a session already, you’ve seen what that looks like in practice.

And if you or someone you know could use support, or you’re interested in volunteering, feel free to get in touch or come and have a chat at a session.

Introducing Staying Connected

Staying Connected is a community project run by North Herts and Stevenage CVS, supporting people across North Hertfordshire and Stevenage to get online with confidence.

Whether it’s access to a device, learning digital skills, or finding patient, local support — this project exists to reduce digital exclusion and help people stay connected to the services, information, and people that matter to them in an increasingly digital world.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about how the project works, who it’s for, and how to get involved — as a participant, volunteer, or partner.
