Happy 100th birthday to Allinghams Butchers, Hitchin! 🥳

This week Allinghams Butchers in the Market Square, Hitchin, celebrates its 100th Birthday! With so many local butchers closing over the last few years as customer shopping trends change it is quite a testament to the hard work of the butchers, great quality of the local meat and the support of the people of Hitchin, that the business is as busy as ever.

The site has been a butcher’s shop for 150 years with the Allinghams Family taking over in 1926. Allinghams is now owned by the Hill and Davies families. The Hills have lived & worked in Hitchin for many years and the Davies’s have been local farmers for over a century. The shop has only changed a little since it opened 100 years ago. There is no longer straw and sawdust on the floor, and the meat has to be refrigerated. Not a requirement 100 years ago! Meat is still hung for tenderness, cut to order and served over the counter.

Their famous Hitchin sausages are still made with the best cut of pork using their traditional recipe. Customer service & quality is still the thing the butchers hold as the most important.

During the week long celebrations Allinghams will be giving away commemorative jute bags, free samples, free tasters and special offers. They welcome customers that have supported them over the years, and new customers to come and see what they do. ❤️

The Great Hitchin Duck Race will take place along the River Hiz as part of Street Food Monthly.

You can put your name down for a duck if you come to the Visit Hitchin Shop. £3 a duck. Maximum 3 ducks per person, and all the money goes back into supporting the Town Centre. The lucky winner will be crowned at the event.

Organisers are encouraging visitors to come along for the duck race and stay for an evening of food, drink and entertainment by the river.

A HUGE thank you to the Churchyard businesses who were able to support this year’s Churchyard Day Raffle! We love it when local town centre businesses work together 😍

The raffle attracted support from a range of Hitchin businesses, with prizes including two £50 food hampers from Halseys Deli & Eatery, afternoon tea for two at Hitchin Priory Hotel, a £50 voucher and consultation from Mill Fabrics, a £50 voucher from Gemini Fashions, £50 craft hamper from The Haberdashery and designer sunglasses from Shephard & Akay Optometrists.

Other prizes included a £30 voucher from Webb's of Hitchin, five £10 vouchers from Simmons Bakers, three £95 vouchers from The Hearing Clinic, a Hitchin cookbook and apron from Visit Hitchin, and a one-hour style consultation plus £30 voucher from DalianiBoutique.

The money from the raffle has helped to raise vital funds towards ongoing restoration work at the Grade I-listed church, one of Hitchin's most recognisable landmarks.

Ducks are getting ready for the race! 🙌 🦆

The Great Hitchin Duck Race will take place along the River Hiz, outside St Mary’s Church.

The event will involve over 200 rubber ducks entering the River Hiz and then racing them downstream to the finish line. Bridge to Bridge. Locals and businesses will have a chance to sponsor a duck and come along to cheer it on as it races down the river.

You can put your name down for a duck if you come to the Visit Hitchin Shop.

£3 a duck. Maximum 3 ducks per person, and all the money goes back into supporting the Town Centre.

🗓️ 2nd July at 5:00pm as part of Street Food Monthly

The lucky winner will be crowned at the event.🏆
