It was once thought that the Sutton Hoo helmet was made in Scandinavia rather than England. This rare Anglo-Saxon die stamp found by a metal detectorist in Kent has changed that view. Experts believe it was used to create decorative metal foils for high-status military equipment, which would include the Sutton Hoo helmet.

The copper alloy die stamp dates from approximately 550-650 AD. Due to its historical significance, it was recently declared treasure. Dr Andrew Richardson, Finds Liaison Officer for Kent County Council and Kent Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, said: “This small but remarkable find provides important evidence that helmets like the Sutton Hoo example could have been made in Kent, highlighting the skill and connections of early medieval craftworkers in the county.”

What do the figures on the stamp represent? “These figures, sometimes referred to as ‘weapon dancers’, have often been interpreted as being connected to the cult of Odin/Woden.” —Portable Antiquities Scheme
