Great news about St Mary’s riverside!
Great news! The Hitchin fountain has been reinstated following collaborative works! ⛲️
Hitchin’s riverside fountain in front of St Mary’s Church is flowing once again, following installation and electrical upgrade works delivered by North Herts Council in partnership with the Dixon family.
The project saw the Dixon family fully fund the reinstatement of the fountain, with North Herts Council supporting essential electrical upgrades to ensure the long-term resilience of the feature. The Council worked closely with the church team, Visit Hitchin, the Dixon family and their installation contractor to complete the fountain works.
Lady Dixon said: “Having worked with both the North Herts District Council and Visit Hitchin over the years on the fountain, from its original installation to commemorate my late husband Sir Ian Dixon’s involvement with the town, it is a delight to see it back up and running again.”
Cllr Ian Albert, Chair of Hitchin Committee and ward councillor for Hitchin Bearton,
stated: “St Mary’s Church is one of Hitchin’s most iconic landmarks, and its riverside setting is a key focal point for our town. We’re pleased to have worked closely with the Dixon family and church representatives to bring the fountain back into use and to modernise important infrastructure around the churchyard.”
Anne Senechal, Churchwarden for St Mary’s Church, commented: “The installation of improved floodlighting by NHDC and the renovation of the fountain by the Dixon family has been a wonderful example of all parties working together to enhance our community. The Church is delighted with the results and the cooperation achieved to ensure
this historic area of the town continues to look beautiful and to be enjoyed by all for years to
come."
Danny Pearson, Hitchin Town Centre Manager for Visit Hitchin, added: “The team at Visit Hitchin were delighted when the new fountain was turned on. It felt like an old friend returning to the Hitchin landscape. This has been a real team effort to get the fountain replaced and we would like to thank everyone involved in getting this icon back to where it belongs in the very heart of Hitchin.”
