Hitchin Nature Network

Hitchin Nature Network We are a community group who want to work with you to make Hitchin a more nature-friendly town.

Whether you have a big garden, a window box and/or you're passionate about your local greenspace, you can help us! We are a group of Hitchin folk who want to bring wildlife back to our town by making space in our gardens for nature, creating a network of mini nature reserves across our gardens and parks. Did you know that all the gardens in the UK cover a total area of around 1 million acres? This

is greater than all our nature reserves combined and that's before you include parks and greenspaces. Nature is declining alarmingly in our countryside and urban and suburban areas are increasingly becoming refuges for once come wildlife such as the hedgehog. All this means that the way we garden and manage our greenspaces matters and that's where you come in! We want to work with you to make Hitchin richer in wildlife by creating a network of nature-friendly public and private spaces. No matter how small your little piece of England is, you can help us make Hitchin a more nature-friendly town.

Hitchin's Bees

The Wildlife Trusts are promoting throughout June... the light lingers, Swifts call and wildflowers push through cracks in the pavement. What wildlife can you see? What can I do?

Hitchin Nature Network would like to suggest a few ideas of how you might interact with Hitchin’s wildlife and we'll start with a few ideas about our local Bees...

Cool and damp weather conditions are predicted for the week ahead and will allow for some up-close encounters, especially first thing in the morning. Good luck!

It looks like our pavements around town have received their annual dose of glyphosate this week: this photo shows dead grass around the trees near the market. Maybe North Herts Council should be thinking of following the lead of over 100 councils around the UK such as Cambridge who have stopped this practice? [edit: St. Albans haven't banned glyphosate but are trialling Glyphosate-free streets involving 90 people who manually weeded the streets]. places like France glyphosate is totally banned in non-agricultural settings including pavements, playgrounds, cemeteries and green spaces. Letting a bit more nature in to our built environment is a good thing!

Last chance to join me at Waresley Park tomorrow at 10am for the first wild writing session - Celebrate and Energise

We'll focus on the beauty and abundance of wildflowers and tree blossom around us this month, exploring ways that flowers appeal to our senses and how we can capture that energy in our writing.

Sessions on birds and trees too in the upcoming weeks...
