Yesterday at the Winter Shopper Seminar, Martin Kingdon, Chair & Sustainability Director at POPAI delivered a sustainability update. For those who missed it, here’s what stood out:

At the Winter Shopper Seminar in London we also heard from Brendan Boyle, CCO at TapCreative, and Michelle Levett, Retail Director at Rontec, as they shared their approach to modernising the Shop’n Drive brand to meet the needs of the next generation of customers.

They explored the changing role of UK forecourts, noting a £5bn rise in non-fuel sales over the past year and their ranking as the 5th most essential service on the high street, ahead of pubs and just behind banks.

The presentation outlined Shop’n Drive’s ambition to redefine convenience and be “the best on the road”, using customer insights and a renewed brand focus. It also highlighted the process behind the brand’s development, from the design of new brand elements to their ex*****on across stores and communications. A thoughtful look at how strategic branding can adapt to evolving consumer needs.

During the Winter Shopper Seminar in London we heard from Helen Davis, Senior Account Development Manager at Savi, who shared how mobile coupons are revolutionising the shopper journey and driving activation at the point of purchase.

Drawing on a poll of 2,000 UK shoppers, she highlighted that over half of shoppers say coupons influence their purchasing decisions, with more than 60% using their smartphones to redeem them in-store. Helen demonstrated how mobile coupons enable brands to engage with shoppers at every stage of their journey, from out-of-home advertising and QR codes in-store to online ads that encourage visits to physical locations.

Savi shared standout examples from brands like Diet Coke, Starbucks, and Coca-Cola, with some campaigns achieving coupon redemption rates as high as 67%. A particularly innovative campaign featured Coca-Cola’s virtual vending machine, designed to connect Gen Z audiences with Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.

The presentation concluded with eight practical tips for running effective mobile coupon campaigns, providing actionable insights for brands looking to elevate their marketing strategies.

Yesterday at the Winter Shopper Seminar we heard from Richard Fisher, Design Manager at Holland & Barrett, who shared an inspiring look at the evolving role of Holland & Barrett’s physical retail spaces in today’s landscape.

He highlighted the brand’s recent efforts to enhance the in-store experience taking the successes from a full store overhaul in Chelmsford across the estate of 800 stores. The programme has featured a range of refits from ‘refreshed’ stores with updated fascias, navigation, and welcoming features through to full ‘refits’ that reimagined space allocation, introduced display tables, consultation rooms and added dedicated beauty zones.

The presentation also showcased Holland & Barrett’s innovative approach to reaching customers beyond their own stores, including Next concessions and single-aisle partnerships in Tesco. A compelling example of how thoughtful design and strategic partnerships can keep physical retail relevant and thriving.

Phil Day reviewed 2024 achievements and looked forward to the Awards 2025, Student Retail Design Awards, and the Retail Marketing Conference on 27th February, that will celebrate the 30th anniversary of POPAI. Martin Kingdon then provided a sustainability update, looking back at the history of our sustainability services, our work internationally, and reflecting upon the recent Retailer and Brand Sustainability Roundtable.

A fantastic morning at the POPAI Retailer & Brand Sustainability Roundtable!

Our popular networking and knowledge-sharing session made a return, bringing together POPAI's retailer and brand members for a morning of collaboration and inspiration. The discussion was wide-ranging with topics including: Where attendees were on their sustainability journey, materials selections, agency relations and Scope 3 targets.

It was a great opportunity to connect with industry peers and gain learnings relevant to attendees sustainability responsibilities. A big thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to the conversations.
