🙌 Hands up if you know why this week has been so special?

It’s Volunteers’ Week! 💙🦁

A whole week dedicated to recognising the amazing people who give up their time to help others and support their communities. And here at Highworth and District Lions Club, we simply couldn’t do what we do without our incredible volunteers.

From serving customers in our charity shop, organising events, fundraising, and helping behind the scenes — to supporting local families, elderly residents, schools, sports clubs and community projects — our volunteers truly are the heart of everything we do.

Words never quite feel enough to say thank you… but we thought we’d give it a go anyway. ✨

✨🦁✨🦁✨🦁✨🦁✨🦁✨🦁✨
Not all heroes wear a cape,
Some give kindness day by day.
Through every season, rain or shine,
The Lions proudly serve their time.

In Highworth town their hearts run deep,
Supporting neighbours, young and weak.
From the charity shop’s friendly door,
To helping those who need much more.

They help with screenings that could save lives,
Supporting men, their dads and wives.
Prostate checks that bring new hope,
Helping families learn to cope.

They drive the elderly into town,
So no one feels forgotten or down.
Mini bus trips with laughs and cheer,
Creating memories year to year.

School uniforms for those in need,
Helping children to succeed.
Football kits for local teams,
Giving youngsters hopes and dreams.

Defibrillators placed with care,
To help protect the community there.
A gift of time, a gift of heart,
That keeps our town safe from the start.

And who could miss that festive sleigh,
Bringing smiles along the way?
Santa waving in the night,
Filling streets with pure delight.

Now vision screening soon will start,
Helping children from the heart.
Making sure young eyes can see,
A brighter future waiting to be.

So if you spot a Lion near,
With raffle books or festive gear,
Just know behind each smile you see,
Is someone helping tirelessly.

This Volunteers’ Week let’s give a cheer,
For our Lions who serve all year! 🦁💙

To every volunteer past and present — thank you for everything you do for Highworth and the surrounding communities. You really do make a difference every single day. 💙

🐝🌼 Happy World Bee Day! 🌼🐝

Today we celebrate the incredible bees that help keep our planet blooming and our food growing. These tiny pollinators play a massive role in supporting biodiversity and protecting our environment. 🌍💛

At Highworth and District Lions, we are proud to support awareness of the importance of bees and the need to protect their habitats for future generations. 🌱🍯

Here are a few simple ways everyone can help:
🌸 Plant bee-friendly flowers
🚫 Reduce the use of pesticides
💧 Leave fresh water out for bees
🍯 Support local beekeepers

Together, even the smallest actions can make a big difference. 🐝✨

💕 Proud moment for our community!

Highworth Lions members Hilary and Sue joined Highworth Mayor Julie at Highworth Cemetery on Cricklade Road to celebrate the installation of a new community defibrillator, generously funded by the Highworth and District Lions.

This lifesaving equipment will help make our community even safer and could make all the difference in an emergency. 💛

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this possible! 💕 #🦁HighworthandDistricLions🦁

Wow! — what a day yesterday! 🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who came by and supported us at the Highworth May Day. We had such a fantastic time on our stall, with the tombola, guess the name of the bear, find the key, and plenty of fun games for everyone to enjoy.

Our very own Rory 🦁 made a special appearance, meeting so many of you and posing for some brilliant photos!

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who came along, took part, and supported us. And a special thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who helped make the day so memorable 💛

We can’t wait to do it all again!

Highworth and Lechlade Lions had a fantastic day working together to deliver a successful PSA testing event in Highworth. 💙

By raising awareness of prostate cancer and offering vital testing, the day made a real difference to our community. A big thank you to everyone who helped organise, support, and attend—it’s amazing what can be achieved when we work together.

Highworth & District Lions are proud to share that our members have now completed their training, and we’ll soon be bringing Lions Sight screening to our local community.

👁️ We’re excited to start making a difference—helping children see clearly and reach their full potential.

This is why we serve. 🦁

✨ A Life Changed Through Lions Sight Screening

💙We are incredibly proud to share a truly life-changing moment made possible through our Lions Sight camera service

During a recent screening, a young child’s severe visual impairment was identified—something that had gone completely unnoticed. Thanks to early detection, this child is now on a journey to seeing the world clearly for the very first time.

An optician shared this heartfelt reflection with us:

“I was given the prescription for the child and I was totally shocked by the strength of the prescription, and the fact he has never worn specs before. It’s hard to explain how poor his vision is, and how he’s found ways of adapting, which allows him to have a normal life. Unbeknown to him or his parents he’s just got on with things as he has never known anything different, and the parents would not have picked up on this. This child could not see anything clearly unless centimetres away. Everything would have been a blur. These patients are usually reserved, accident prone, always stand close to parents, and are very very shy children. Not sociable.
I know this child’s life will be a thousand percent better. His personality will change, he will find new friends, his school work will suddenly improve. This type of patient is once every few years, and it’s the best part of my job to witness them putting the specs on and seeing the world as we do. His mum told me he kept staring at his palm, as he didn’t know it had creases, he just stared at her face and smiled. Pointing at freckles as he’s never seen them before.
I asked the mum if I could pass this on, as I wanted you to know that you have changed this child’s life so much. Every part of his life will improve. I got the best part by watching him wear them, and making him understand what they do. It’s emotional to witness. This isn’t a routine prescription like 99% of my patients, this is life changing.
This makes what you do worth it.”

This is why we do what we do. 👁️
This is the power of Lions service. 🦁

Together, we’re not just screening vision—we’re transforming lives, opening futures, and helping children see the world as it truly is.

The Highworth and District Lion are pleased to have nominated Gloucester House for the Pride of Swindon awards.

On March 5th , David Hazell of the Highworth and District Lions accompanied The Highworth Gloucester House team to the award ceremony which took place at the Double tree at Hilton Hotel in Swindon. Gloucester House were represented by Deborah Toomey (Service Manager), Maz Hyde (Gloucester House Lead) and Alan Baldwin (Chaplain) who as a team, accepted the winners award on behalf of the team and volunteers. It was for their extraordinary commitment in delivering structured addiction recovery programmes for men living with alcohol dependency, drug use, or behavioural addictions, helping them rebuild healthier and more meaningful lives.

A comment from a resident of Gloucester House:

“Since I’ve been at Gloucester House they’ve loved me back to life and I’ve had two distant thoughts about self-harm, but I’m dealing with it better because I feel cared for and in a better place. I now want to build strong relationships with my family and go back into work full-time.”

Gloucester House is a residential rehabilitation facility in Highworth, Swindon, run by a dedicated team of people and funded by the Salvation Army.
