Empower to Cook A social enterprise delivering training on food and life skills to young people and community group leaders

Empower to Cook CIC uses food education to make a real difference in people’s lives. When people become comfortable handling and cooking ingredients they become more confident experimenting with cooking and substituting ingredients in recipes. We deliver food and cookery training to young people and community group leaders working in food insecure areas. We are aiming to empower people to cook and

enjoy cooking for themselves. There are so many recipes available on the internet that it isn't our intention to try to 'reinvent the wheel'. We mainly use existing recipes and make adjustments to suit the class that we're teaching. Depending on the challenges that our children or adults face, we may use tinned fruit or vegetables instead of fresh. But wherever possible we do advocate using local fresh and in-season produce that's sustainable and we encourage our students to cook only what they need or freeze to reduce waste. We may also substitute fruit or veg in a recipe to suit what we already have available in the kitchen. Check us out on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram:

Amongst other December observances, the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year falls on Saturday 21 December. This date marks the day in the year with the fewest hours of daylight.

Of course we have Christmas and all the enthusiasm for the New Year to come whilst we reflect on the year ending.

When you cook what's in season you get the best food available: it hasn't travelled far, has the best flavour, is cheaper and often in abundance. Many of these will be perfect drizzled in olive oil and roasted, alongside some fruit for a festive dessert

November
With night coming early, And dawn coming late…

Hedgehogs will be scurrying about trying to find a suitable place to hibernate. They're particularly fond of brash or leaf piles.

It’s the best time for museum hopping with fewer crowds after a busy summer.

November’s seasonal produce presents the most comforting ingredients to warm the soul. Kitchens promise bubbling pots of hearty stews and soups packed with seasonal root vegetables. From carrots and parsnips to potatoes and celeriac, these humble veg offer a rich palette of colours and flavours

The variety of celebrations around the world in October is a testament to the beauty of cultural diversity. Halloween, Diwali, Chuseok, and Oktoberfest, among others.

Beyond these cultural celebrations, October is an optimal month to focus on your health — both mental and physical. World Mental Health Day falls on October 10, and the rest of the month contains several other awareness days like World Arthritis Day, World Allergy Awareness Day and World Menopause Day.

Settle into autumn with the very best of seasonal produce. We're making the most of pumpkin, beetroot, pears and more

September is regarded as the start of the farming year with the harvest all but complete. It is also the start of the time for traditional feasts, festivals, and fairs.

I recently had a simple potato salad made from fresh garden potatoes which was absolutely delicious and I’ve found a savoury crumble recipe online made with butternut squash which I intend to try.

Eating locally produced seasonal food is not only more tasty, healthy and affordable but is better for our environment too. Why not visit your local market, greengrocer's or farm shop for inspiration and google some recipes using your favourite veg?

The old Anglo Saxon name for August meant w**d month because it is the month when w**ds (or shall we say wildflowers😉) and other plants grow most rapidly.

It is the busiest time for tourism, and the hottest days of the year usually fall in August. A number of cultural festivals are also held around this time and National Eat Outside Day is 31 August! Whether at home, park, beach or restaurant food just tastes better when we eat it under the open sky.

July is allegedly the warmest month of the year and widely considered a fun month thanks to holidays, picnics and an absurd focus on ice cream!

Seasonal eating is something that humanity has been practising since the dawn of time, only then it was simply called ‘eating’ 😀
Choose a few ingredients from the list below and google them to find a seasonal recipe. We love discovering new recipes this way!

Summer’s here, the days are getting longer and June brings beauty in all forms from flowers to sunlight.

5 June is World Environment Day, a day to raise awareness across the globe.
16 June is Father’s Day.
20 June is the summer solstice, heralding the start of summer and is the day with the most hours of daylight followed by this month’s Full Moon on the 21st.

Eating seasonally in June means eating foods that are naturally ready to harvest this month. We can enjoy the more colourful, complex and delicate produce of summer. As well as leafy greens and vibrant berries, asparagus, broad beans, cucumber and peas are just a few of the foods now in season.

The celebration of World Laughter Day on 5 May is a positive manifestation for World Peace and it builds up a global consciousness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. We love this 💛.

May Day Bank Holiday is on 6th, International Nurses Day 12th, Walk to School Week 20-24th and Late Spring Bank Holiday on 27 May are all worthy of a mention.

Eating locally produced seasonal food is not only more tasty, healthy and affordable but is better for our environment too. Why not visit your local market greengrocer's stall or farm shop for inspiration and google some recipes using your favourite veg?

Social Enterprise - working for the community

Empower to Cook CIC is a social enterprise based in Buckinghamshire. We provide cookery classes, food education and consultancy to children, community groups, families and corporates. Empower to Cook CIC was founded in 2014 by Michael Brown a trained and experienced chef and qualified teacher with a breadth of expertise working with and educating people about food.

Michael identified a local need to champion better food education in the community. He is an advocate for teaching about food from an early age and is passionate about working with children, young people and families to raise self-esteem, confidence and basic life skills using food as a tool. Empower to Cook classes ensure people learn by doing rather than by watching, using seasonal ingredients that are inexpensive and may be easily bought or grown. We use surplus food where possible, tapping into the growing network of food waste suppliers.
