It was a VERY cold morning up on Burbage Moor for our moss planting. John from the Eastern Moors Partnership (and member of our PFF High Peak group) lead us out onto the frost covered moors.

We got stuck in, planting sphagnum moss plug plants into the peat and learnt about how this work benefits the moors and the wider environment.

Sphagnum Moss is the only plant that actively creates new peat bog. This process sequesters huge amounts of carbon as the moisture held by the moss prevents dead plant material from fully decomposing. Essentially locking that carbon up in the peat rather than releasing it into the atmosphere.

This event is part of and Healthy Moorland Campaign, following on from our Moorland Picnic last summer. We are now in the process of meeting with MPs across Sheffield and the High Peak discussing the damage done by burning the moors for grouse shooting and the huge range of benefits to re-wetting and restoring the moors. Get in touch if you’d like to get involved with this campaign, we’d love to have you!
