Samling Institute for Young Artists

Samling Institute for Young Artists Nurturing Talent. Mastering Technique. Inspiring Excellence.

Samling Institute is an internationally recognised authority in the training of young classical voices and piano accompanists. Since 1996, we have built a global family of artists, many of whom return to pass on their expertise to the next generation, ensuring that song and opera continue to thrive. We do this through two closely linked programmes:

The Samling Artist Programme provides residentia

l masterclass courses and ongoing development for early-career singers and pianists. Samling Academy supports younger singers in North-East England and through Samling Futures we are building the future of classical singing in state secondary schools. We transform the lives of young musicians, from school students to early-career artists and have created a self-sustaining circle of musical excellence as Samling Academy Singers return to us as Samling Artists and Samling Artists return to lead both programmes.

How much of an impact do Samling Artists have? Well, this month's round-up features no fewer than 58 of them, ranging from our very first programme 30 years ago to five from our most recent week. We're delighted that one of our newly appointed patrons Louise Alder won the RPS Singer Award at this year's Royal Philharmonic Society awards and we have success stories from Samling Artists across the world on opera stages, concert platforms, recordings, radio and TV appearances and doing equally impressive work behind the scenes.

We complete our new Samling Artist introductions with two Cambridge graduates. Mezzo-soprano Louisa Stuart-Smith studied Fine Art before furthering her musical studies at Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Pianist George Herbert studied German and Music and was an organ scholar with The Choir of St John's College, Cambridge and is now continuing his studies in ensemble piano at Royal Academy of Music. At our masterclass on Saturday you'll see Louisa working on an aria from Così fan tutte and George will be receiving guidance from Malcolm Martineau on song repertoire.

Today's new Samling Artists are countertenor Zheng Jiang and soprano Eyra Norman who both studied at Royal College of Music. We were also delighted to hear this week that they are both through to the semi-finals of this year's The Kathleen Ferrier Awards. At our public masterclass led by Anna Stéphany, Malcolm Martineau and Adrian Lester at Marchmont House on Saturday, you'll see Zheng and Eyra working on show-stopping arias by Handel and Mozart: don't miss it! https://www.samling.org.uk/events/sap-march26/
