Transition Tynedale Transition Tynedale: Local community action in the face of global climate issues Please feel free to get in touch.

Transition Tynedale was set up by a group of people from the Tyne Valley in 2008 who came together to promote the aims of the international Transition Movement. Its over-all aim was and continues to be finding ways to build a more resilient and sustainable local community. Over the years it has fostered and continues to manage a wide range of environmental projects, all of which are focused on the devastating fact of climate change, in line with the original ‘think globally, act locally’ mantra. We see one of our main roles as encouraging and supporting individuals who volunteer, in whichever ways they can at the local level, to help mitigate the impacts of this damage being done to every living thing on the planet. Information and updates on our current projects, events and activities are published in our newsletter, which you can sign up for here, on our website and on this page. There’ll also be notice of our occasional open meetings - an opportunity for anyone to come and exchange ideas, or suggest a new project. If you want to join in and commit to some positive action you’ll meet like-minded people to work with. Just email us at [email protected]

Join Hexham Swift Heaven to watch the evening return of swifts to their nests in the town centre.

Weather permitting, join us at 2115 on Monday 20th July.

Meeting place is the pavement outside Abbey gardens opposite the old Courant building in Beaumont Street.

Come and enjoy one of the sounds and sights of the summer before the swifts head back off to Africa.

In the meantime thanks to RSPB for the views of breeding swifts.

If you've not seen it (and even if you have) the wonderful Forum Cinema in Hexham is putting on a free showing of The People's Emergency Briefing on July 30th.
The film lays out the true scale of the climate and biodiversity crises. It's a hard but essential watch.

Thanks to Helen for leading our Hexham Space 4 Nature annual Highford Park grassland survey and thank you student Gracie for helping. We're working with our council to change cutting regimes at the site to encourage more wildflowers which in turn helps the pollinating insects, birds and other wildlife. The visit today suggests it may be working.

The woodland walk at the top of the Sele is providing great pollen, nectar and shelter for lots of insects. We try not to intervene in nature's plans too much but it's recognised in conservation that, generally, the smaller the habitat the more you may need to manage it. On the woodland walk some of the stronger plants are doing so well they are out-competing smaller or more delicate plants which need a helping hand. In order to provide a range of plants and flowers we need to exert some gentle control.

Do you have an hour you could spare to help us continue to improve the ecological richness of the woodland walk border? We'd really appreciate it.

If you know you can come along 11am - midday Saturday 11th July then it would be great if you would let Wendy know by emailing her at [email protected]

If you have them, please bring a hand trowel or fork or both and gardening gloves. A wheelbarrow and trugs will be available for collecting vegetation we remove. If it's hot don't forget hats and a drink.
