Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue

Cheshire Guinea Pig Rescue Guinea Pig Rescue & Sanctuary covering Cheshire, North Wales & Merseyside. We offer rehoming, adoptions, bonding, grooming & holiday boarding.

Our adoption Policy 2023:

1: Rehoming

If you live in a rented property please check with your landlord you can have Guinea Pigs in your home. We rehome Guinea Pigs to SMOKE FREE homes. However we allow both indoor and outdoor homes. Guinea pigs make wonderful family pets however we recommend any interaction with children younger than 8 is supervised. Homes with young children are encouraged to

apply. We ourselves have 5 young children so our piggies are well used to seeing/being handled by young children. We will only rehome single Guinea Pigs to live with an existing companion to ensure they don't get lonely unless this is in the pigs best interest. So be prepared to adopt a pair. Adoption donation of £30 per Guinea Pig is compulsory. We match our Guinea Pigs with your circumstances - A set up check will be carried out via a date proofed photo. All our guinea pigs are re-homed on the basis that they are not to be used for breeding. We cannot guarantee the age of sows, so it is important sows are not bred from. Birth problems can occur in sows that have not had a litter before the age of 12 months. Most of our rescue guinea pigs boars and sows have already had a difficult time and just want a peaceful loving home free from extra stress. All Adoptions are considered on an individual basis.

2: Existing pets:
Think carefully how your exisiting pets will accept new family members, this mainly refers to Dogs and cats. Dogs are a huge part of a family, and some breeds can instinctively be interested in rodents !! So its worth taking into consideration how your beloved pooch will welcome Guinea Pigs into your home. We have added this reminder to our policy as sadly Guinea Pigs were recently returned due to a pet dog becoming very stressed and not leaving them alone. We recommend all owners never leave their Guinea Pigs unsupervised around other animals and use a fully enclosed run in their garden.

3. Health

A full health check and mite check is carried out when every the guinea pig is admitted to the rescue. However, we cannot guarantee this and therefore we recommend a preventative 3 monthly dose of ivermectin. Bonding: Owners who have experience of guinea pig care have the choice to carry out this out themselves at home and before introducing a guinea pig to an existing Guinea Pig.The wellbeing of a depressed guinea pig is paramount and the benefits of exclusion have to be weighed up. Guinea pigs can be placed near to one another so at least they can share conversation and smells. This is occasionally done with neutered boars.

4: Hutches/Cages

Outdoor / winter definition :
Hutch outside during summer months, moving to a Garage / Shed from October to March - with lighting during the winter months. Area not used for car storage. Indoor definition : Inside your home / conservatory. Outdoor/Winter:
Minimum requirements
Secure garden with run available/fox proof mesh
Garage/Shed - with lighting and heat as required. Area not used for car storage

5ft x 2ft length hutch - minimum for 2 Guinea Pigs, this size gives plenty of room for toys and tunnels. A double hutch is a great choice for a trio of Guinea Pigs
Outdoor secure covered run minimum 5ft x 2ft
Waterproof and windproof cover. We recommend the Chartwell 5ft hutch double or single, its very well made and meets the requirement
5ft x 3ft run

Indoor: Minimum requirements for 2/3 Guinea Pigs. A minimum 140cm length Guinea Pig cage. 160cm is preferred and will make your piggies happier. C & C grid set up - 4 grid x 2 grid minimum (loft space optional)

5: Diet
Adoptees agree to ensure the guinea pig is fed fresh meadow hay, a varied fresh low calcium diet and dried nuggets with added vitamin C . The rescue advises a low calcium diet to help avoid bladder problems. Science selective grain free nugget or burgess excell are our prefered products. Good examples are:
Burgess excell / Mr Johnsons Guinea Pig Advanced / Science selective and Science selective grain free / Harringtons
Hay and fresh water MUST be available at all times.

Meet Cheeky Charizard!🧡

Charizard is an absolute sweetheart who adores his humans. When he hears someone coming into his enclosure, he’ll happily step up the side of his enclosure for kisses — especially if there’s the sound of a fridge opening nearby! 😂

But Charizard has had a difficult time making friends with other boys. He came from a situation where lots of males were sharing a small space with limited resources, so he can find living with other boys challenging.

That’s why neutering is so important for Charizard. Once he’s had his snip, he’ll be able to live happily alongside a lovely girl (or even a couple of girls!) and finally have the piggy companionship he deserves. 💕

As much as Charizard loves his people, humans can’t quite replace the companionship of another pig.
So, if you’d like to help Charizard — or other boys just like him — please consider supporting our Sponsor the Snip fundraiser! ✂️🍒

Every donation helps us get these boys neutered and one step closer to finding their forever homes with some lovely ladies🥰

Foster Friday✨

Meet Squid and Jellyfish, two gorgeous 3-year-old male guinea pigs who are searching for a loving forever family.
These handsome boys have been with us in foster care for the past month, and it's been lovely watching their personalities shine🥹

🦑 Squid is the more confident one – always first to investigate what's going on, especially if snacks are involved!

🪼 Jellyfish is a little more reserved, but he's growing in confidence every day and is becoming a little braver with gentle handling and patience.

They're looking for a home where they'll be loved, well cared for and given the time to continue building their confidence together. They have such sweet little personalities and deserve a family to call their own. ❤️

If you think you could offer Squid and Jellyfish the home they deserve, or you'd like to know more about them, please get in touch.

Even if you can't adopt, sharing this post could help them find their perfect family. 🏡

Females vs Males — Why Boys Can Be a Great Choice💙

We often find majority of people want to adopt female Guinea Pigs - when actually male Guinea pigs may be a better suited companion for their family. There’s a common belief that girls are always the easier option and that boys are more likely to fight — but it’s not quite that simple!

Here’s why you shouldn’t rule out the boys!

💙 Boys can make fantastic companions.
While male guinea pigs generally need to live in pairs unless neutered (so they can live with a herd of females), a well-matched pair of boys can have a wonderful bond.

💙 “Boys always fight” is a myth.
Plenty of male pairings live together happily! Successful bonding is much more about matching personalities than simply whether they’re male or female.

💙 Girls aren’t automatically easier to bond.
Female guinea pigs have individual personalities too, and some pairings can be challenging. There’s no guarantee that two girls will automatically get along.

💙 Boys can be very people-orientated.
Many male guinea pigs seem to enjoy human interaction and handling, while females can often be a little more independent. Of course, personality varies hugely from piggy to piggy!

💙Space and resources matter.
When problems arise in a group — whether it’s boys or girls — a lack of space, hides, food bowls, hay or other resources can contribute to tension. Giving guinea pigs enough room and plenty of resources can make a huge difference.

💙Most importantly: choose the guinea pig, not the stereotype.
Don’t choose based purely on s*x, looks or age. Look at the individual guinea pig’s personality and think about which character will be the best fit for you and their future companion.

A boy can be just as wonderful a choice as a girl — and sometimes, he might be exactly the piggy you’ve been looking for! 🐹💙

Sponsor the Snip Sunday 🍒✂️

Meet Jolteon 💛
Jolteon is a curious little boy who has grown so much in confidence since coming into our care. He loves exploring new environments, racing through tunnels and chatting away to his humans! He’s also a big fan of his teatime routine. 🥰

We know Jolteon would benefit hugely from the company of a girly guinea, but first he needs his neuter.

Jolteon was part of a large surrender of free-roaming guinea pigs. Sadly, the boys arrived covered in wounds from fighting. They had been living in a large group of males, with too little space and not enough food. Their experiences have left them understandably traumatised. Many now ‘see red’ when another male enters their space and will attack almost instantly. Yet with humans, they are gentle, sweet boys who are desperate for companionship. 💔

Neutering will give Jolteon the chance to be bonded with a female piggy. Each neuter costs £120, and with so many boys needing surgery, we desperately need your help.

If you can spare a few pounds towards a snip, we would be incredibly grateful. And if you can’t donate, simply sharing this post could make a huge difference. ❤️

Humphrey has been reserved🥰

One Year Waiting for Humphrey ❤️🐹

Thursday marked one year since Humphrey joined the rescue.

This little man may be blind, but that certainly doesn’t stop him! He’s curious, friendly, and always ready to explore the world around him in his own special way. And at almost three years old, he’s still only a young boy with so much life ahead of him.

Humphrey absolutely loves a cuddle and one of his favourite things is being the centre of attention. Being talked to seems to reassure him, and he’s such a sweet boy who really enjoys human company. 🥰

He was surrendered as a single pig, and that’s all he had ever known before coming into rescue. He has since been neutered, as living alone meant he developed some dominant traits. Because of this, Humphrey would be better suited to a home with a lady friend or two. This special boy deserves a place to call home. ❤️

He’s full of curiosity, personality and love to give. He just needs someone who will understand his needs, give him time to settle, and show him that being different doesn’t mean being any less deserving of a loving home.

One whole year in rescue is far too long for such a lovely boy.

Could you be the person who finally gives this gorgeous little man his forever? 🏡

Please share Humphrey’s story — maybe his forever family is out there waiting to find him🐹
