Happy Easter

Passed by the field last night - could see two scooters parked up - had reg plates and L plates so looked legit - I could see 4 youngsters doing something through the hedge but must admit I was thinking not something good šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Anyway today got to my daily jump and wow - this is the best!! Thank you very much - and I’m sure many other walkers will be just as pleased - very well done šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸā¤ļø

Beware - where there’s a will there’s a way!

11/03/2026

Listening to the Radio today, a lady from a hamlet described how she was scammed, I thought it was worth mentioning because we all use parcel deliveries and how many times do you see a picture posted on social media with someone asking have you got my parcel?

A picture of someone’s garden/step doorway?

This ladies parcel had gone astray - delivered by EVRI - they yadnt done anything wrong but because the lady couldn’t contact them, she became frustrated and posted on social media - this is where the scam took place - a man with a authentic looking profile suggested the lady join an evri missed deliveries customer services chat group on WhatsApp - she did and she received a message saying that evri would call her later that day - she didn’t believe it, but as promised a person claiming to be evri did call and said her parcel was lost and they would refund her the Ā£100 plus costs but first she had to set up a payment account - she downloaded the app and followed his instructions - eventually she had set up a recipient account (his) not hers but she didn’t know that - he said she needed to enter a code to enable payment into the screen the code was actually a number like 250.50 so he then withdrew the amount plus the Ā£100.

She said as the process went on she felt is was a scam but still proceeded because she felt frustrated about the non delivery and everything seemed so genuine.

She said she felt embarrassed afterwards and found it hard to tell anyone because she thought of herself clever enough to avoid being scammed.

It’s one of the many to watch out for!

25/02/2026

Listening to Radio 4 today , there was an in depth segment around women and sexual assault on trains. CCTV coverage not always gathering good enough images to identify or prosecute a perpetrator.

So I’ve put together an overview and some tips to keep yourself safe.

Situational Awareness (Without Paranoia)

Most everyday crime relies on distraction, isolation, or predictability.

Practical habits:
Keep your head up (even if wearing headphones — keep volume low).
Notice exits when entering a space (train carriage, cafƩ, car park).
Sit near other people or near the conductor on trains when possible.
Trust the ā€œsomething feels offā€ instinct — leave early rather than justify staying.

This is about staying mentally present.

Environmental Positioning

Where you place yourself often matters more than what you carry.

On trains:
Sit in a carriage with other passengers rather than empty ones.
Avoid corner seats that block escape.
Move immediately if someone makes you uncomfortable — you don’t owe politeness.

In public spaces:
Stay in well-lit areas.
Avoid predictable routines if feeling targeted.
Park under lights and near entrances.

There’s a concept in criminology called ā€œcapable guardianshipā€ — simply being near others reduces risk.

Personal Boundaries & Voice

A large proportion of harassment escalates because perpetrators rely on:
Social awkwardness
Victim hesitation
Fear of ā€œmaking a sceneā€

Clear boundary phrases:
ā€œDon’t touch me.ā€
ā€œMove away.ā€
ā€œI said no.ā€

Short. Direct. Loud if needed.

Embarrassment is often protective. Predators prefer quiet compliance.

Defensive Tools (Within UK Law)

In the UK:
Pepper spray is illegal.
Tasers are illegal.
Carrying something ā€œfor self-defenceā€ that can be used as a weapon can be unlawful.

Legal options:
Personal alarm (very effective psychologically).
Torch (bright LED disorients briefly).
Phone emergency features (999 shortcut, location sharing).

Apps like:
Hollie Guard
What3Words (for precise location)

Technology helps, but awareness still matters most.

Travel-Specific Strategies (Sexual Assault Context)

For trains specifically:
Stand near the doors when the train is crowded.
If assaulted, move immediately and tell staff.
Text British Transport Police: 61016
In emergency: 999

British Transport Police are actually quite responsive to train-related reports.

Home & Property Crime

Most burglary prevention is simple deterrence:
Visible lighting
Visible cameras (even basic)
Lock discipline (many burglaries involve unlocked entry)
Neighbour awareness

Crime tends to follow ease and anonymity.

āø»

The Bigger Layer: Community

ā€œThis is design + care reducing opportunity.ā€

Well-maintained spaces reduce crime.
Active use reduces crime.
Ownership reduces crime.

When areas feel watched, connected, and cared for, crime drops. Not because criminals vanish — but because opportunity shrinks.

8ļøāƒ£ Psychological Protection

There’s another dimension — not living in constant threat-mode.

Protecting yourself also means:
Avoiding doom-scrolling crime stories
Recognising media amplification
Balancing vigilance with normality

Most people are not predators.
Most journeys are uneventful.
But small habits reduce risk.

A Useful Framework

Think in terms of:
Reduce isolation
Reduce predictability
Increase visibility
Increase noise
Trust instinct

Meet the team

Your Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) plays a vital role in tackling many of the local issues that matter to you. They are out in your area every day, and always available to offer crime prevention advice or for you to raise concerns with.

Each NPT consists of a dedicated Sergeant, Police Constable (PCs) and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) all under the command of an inspector. While they may be the ones you see the most, the NPTs do not work alone. They are supported by staff and officers from across the whole Humberside Police force area, and they work closely with local authorities, community leaders and residents to decide the local policing priorities for the area and find useful, long-term solutions.
Our approach is shaped by four key themes: We protect vulnerable people and keep people safe; We are out in your communities, visible, listening and working with you to deliver the services you need; We successfully tackle crime and ASB; We will be there when you need us.

Humber-talking has set our priorities; this month we are to:

• Vehicle ASB/Hessle Foreshore

Throughout the following weeks patrols will continue to show high visibility where needed and to monitor the number of vehicles in the area and to deal with any offences positively

• ASB Hessle Square

There have been a couple of reported incidents of vandalism which is reportedly by a couple of young children who have been the source of anti-social behaviour. This tends to occur after school times and during the weekends. Plans for increased police presence via foot patrol in the area at key times and to engage with individuals involved to identify them.

• Theft from motor vehicle

There have been a couple of clusters of theft from motor vehicle incidents in Hessle, where several vehicles were either entered and had items taken from within or had the door handles tried. One offender was arrested and charged following one run of incidents on one day. The offender for the other incident was not identified. Over the coming weeks and months patrols will pay passing attention to the area at identified times as well as encouraging residents to report any incidents. Leaflet drops of signs to leave in the vehicles which say they do not have any valuables inside. We will also use social media pages to issue advice about securing vehicles and not leaving valuables inside the vehicles.

Fraud.

Cybercrime and fraud are now the most common crime in the UK, accounting for around 50 per cent of all offences and costing the economy billions of pounds each year.
Report Fraud has been created to meet this challenge by providing a single, national gateway for reporting and intelligence that will strengthen the collective response of policing, government and the private sector.
It brings together the reporting of both cybercrime and fraud in one place for the first time, making it quicker, clearer and more supportive for people and businesses to come forward.

Bogus CCTV Systems calls

āš ļø Scam Warning: Bogus ā€œCCTV Installerā€ Calls

Hi everyone — just a quick warning for local businesses and residents.

I believe I may have received a bogus call from someone pretending to be a CCTV installer/security company, but the questions seemed less about offering a service and more about checking whether I had CCTV installed.

This may be a tactic used to:

āœ… find out if a property is monitored
āœ… identify premises without cameras
āœ… gather security details before a break-in
āœ… follow up later with doorstep scams or theft attempts

Please be cautious if you receive calls like this:

🚩 Unsolicited call offering CCTV upgrades or ā€œfree security checksā€
🚩 Asking directly whether you have cameras or alarm systems
🚩 Pressing for details about where cameras are positioned
🚩 Wanting to ā€œpop roundā€ quickly without proper paperwork
🚩 No clear company name, address, or verifiable website

Safe Steps:

āœ” Never confirm your security setup to strangers on the phone
āœ” Ask for the company name and call back using an official number
āœ” Don’t let anyone visit without verification
āœ” Report suspicious calls to Action Fraud or 101 if concerned

Just sharing so others stay alert — especially small shops, cafĆ©s, and premises with quiet rear access.

Stay safe everyone.

New

Humbertalking has set our priorities, this month we are to:

• Operation Yuletide
• Shop Theft
• Vehicle ASB Hessle Foreshore
• Anti-social behaviour update – Brough/Welton

Here’s a summary of just some of the crimes that have been reported across all three Wards last month:

Residential Burglary

Business Burglary

8/12/25 Bellway Homes, business burglary to site compound, stealing a boiler from within.

12/12/25 Treetops Hesslewood Office, business burglary to Hair Salon stealing various hair products and cash from within. Enquiries are ongoing.

Thefts

11/12/25 Sainsburys, shop theft, suspect named and enquiries ongoing.

11/12/25 Aldi, attempt shop theft with negative results, enquiries ongoing to establish circumstances.

21/12/25 First Lane, theft from person of another, bank card stolen from victim.

Damage

16/12/25 Station Road, North Ferriby, unknown person has approached victim’s vehicle and scratched two large Xs into the back door of the vans.

Humber-talking has set our priorities, this month we are to:

• Vehicle ASB Hessle Forehsore

Operation Yuletide is Humberside Police coordinated festive-season strategy, starting 1 December, focused on boosting patrols, reducing crime spikes, protecting vulnerable individuals, and working closely with local partners to ensure a safer Christmas and New Year. We will be increasing patrols in the town centre and other locations linked to Anti-social behaviour.

• Shop Theft

Overall, there has been a continued reduction in the number of thefts reported in Hessle. We will continue to hold regular shop watch meetings and increase patch walks in the Hessle Square area over the coming weeks and months. We will work closely with the Hessle Civic CCTV on The Square to see if offenders can be seen and identified around the times of the thefts for stores involved.

• Vehicle ASB Hessle Forehsore

There has been a reduction in reported ASB incidents in the last period, which may partially be due to the colder weather and darker nights. There will be a continued patrolling of the Foreshore on evenings where demand allows and positive enforcement where necessary.

• ASB- taking place on local parks and open spaces in Brough/ Welton.

There have been no further reports of ASB on the Burrs Playing field and overall anti-social behaviour has reduced in the Brough area since the last period.

Crime reduction advice

Did you know your neighbourhood team can offer Crime reduction advice and visit for your home, business, or open space area, like a play park?
This includes a site survey, visual audit, and recommendations on how to make changes, large or small, to protect your home, place of work or community area.

These are free of charge and hope to stop you becoming a victim of crime, reduce crime and stop an area becoming an ABS hotspot.

Fraud

Fraud is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person.

Cybercrime is any act dealing with computers and networks. Additionally, cybercrime also includes traditional crimes through the internet.

Fraud can be committed against an individual or businesses.

Check the Action Fraud website for the latest scams and get advice on how to stop this from happening to you.
If you have been a victim of fraud, please report it, there is nothing to be embarrassed about, the scammers are very good at what they do, and you are not alone.

Please find below a couple of recent alerts sent from Humberside Police:

Awareness of parcel thefts during the festive period.

With the festive period in full flow, there is often an increase in online orders that are delivered by several companies across the Humberside area.

With the increase in deliveries, there is always the chance that parcels may be targeted by thieves after they have been left at the delivery address.

Below are some tips to help you keep your deliveries safe -

Track your deliveries, most delivery companies have a tracking option that allows you to monitor your package and obtain an estimated delivery time.

Provide a ā€˜safe space' for your delivery. Most delivery companies allow you to nominate a ā€˜safe space’ for your package, this could be with a neighbour, with a friend or maybe a secure parcel box. Ensure you provide a location if you think you won't be home at the time of delivery. A wheelie bin is not a suitable location, as that is the first-place thieves will normally look.

Consider security measures, such as a doorbell camera or CCTV to deter thieves and record any suspicious behaviour.

If you witness any suspicious behaviour in your area, please report it on 101, or 999 if it is a crime in progress.

Make it a resolution to keep your bike safe

Bikes have often been favoured as gifts during the festive period – whether it’s your first bike or the latest top of the range racer! No matter what you spend on them, they are still a valued gift.

Being such a popular gift, it’s important to ensure they are kept safe and secure.

Unfortunately, cycle theft remains high in our force area, and we are encouraging cycle owners to ensure they register their bike, whether it is new old, on Bike Register: https://www.bikeregister.com/ or Immobilise: http://www.immobilise.com

A lot of cycle theft is undertaken by opportunist thieves who notice an unlocked and unattended cycle as a perfect target for their crime.

It’s important to remember to be careful when sharing details about bikes on social media, as some use it to target high value cycles and identify possible cycles to steal.

If you are looking to buy a bike, always make sure you are buying from a reputable source.

NHW Crime Shop

The Neighbourhood Network is working hard to help communities protect themselves from crime. As part of their services, they offer a low-cost crime reduction equipment shop. Products on offer include Cycle Locks, Personal Alarms, Shed and Window Alarms, CCTV signs and stickers plus lots more.

If there is a product you are seeking and it’s not listed on their website, please email [email protected]. They are always looking to expand their product range based on the needs of the community.

For all residents who would like to take advantage of purchasing low-cost products, please visit their website www.nnetwork.org.uk/shop

New Technologies

We appreciate that things like the internet and social media isn’t for everyone but also know some NHW groups endorse and take pride in developing this. It’s really where you are on the subject matter. One thing that strikes us as a possibility is for those people that are confident in the subject to potentially share their experience with other that might not quite be at a similar stage but want to learn more - for everyday issues, NHW or both.

This is a first step to see if there are people in NHW in the East Riding that might be interested. Wherever you are on the knowledge line, let us know and maybe it’s something we can help develop or possibly make a funding bid for.

Safe and Sound Grant

You can now have video doorbells fitted through the Safe & Sound Grant. The grant is open to anyone that:

• Is aged sixty (or over) or disabled
• Is not a tenant of East Riding of Yorkshire Council (though if you are a tenant of ERYC then you can apply to a separate fund through your Housing Officer)
• Does not have combined household savings of more than Ā£23,250
• Has not successfully applied for the Safe & Sound grant in the previous two years

How to apply
For the Safe & Sound grant you can request an application form by sending an email to [email protected] or by calling 01482 396380.

Due to the addition of video doorbells, we are pleased to tell you that the Safe & Sound grant has been more popular than ever this year but please don’t forget to tell others about it.

Humberwatch Updates
