#9 — Kagome (Basket Weave)

A symbol of protection. An evil-repellent. Keeping harm at bay.

Kagome takes its name from the woven openings in bamboo baskets. Traditionally, its many “eyes” were believed to watch over the wearer and protect them from misfortune.

As I stitched this pattern, I found myself thinking about the importance of protecting your boundaries.

The confidence to say no to opportunities that pull you away from your purpose.

Protecting your time and energy.

Creating space to make, rest, and grow.

Like a woven basket, boundaries become stronger when reinforced over time.

#8 — Hamaguri no Kai (Clam Shell)

A symbol of the right fit. A supportive marriage. An unbreakable bond.

The Hamaguri pattern is inspired by the Japanese clam shell. Each shell has a unique matching half, and only those two pieces fit perfectly together.

Because of this, the motif became a symbol of lasting relationships, harmonious partnerships, and finding your perfect match.

As I stitched this pattern, I found myself thinking about my own marriage.

Building a business can be a lonely and uncertain thing. Having someone who believes in you, encourages you, and helps you keep going makes all the difference.

The Fabric Folk wouldn’t exist without my husband’s support. Long before there was a CIC, a fabric sale, or a workshop, there was someone telling me I could do it.

#7 — Shippo (Seven Treasures)

A symbol of human connection. Enduring relationships. Interconnectedness.

The Shippo pattern is formed from interlocking circles that expand endlessly across the cloth. Inspired by the Buddhist “seven treasures,” it represents the idea that human connection is among life’s greatest treasures.

As I stitched this pattern, I found myself thinking about all the people woven into The Fabric Folk.

The makers who give rescued materials a second life.

The companies and individuals who donate fabric, attend workshops, and commission projects.

The kind strangers who share skills, lend a hand, or simply cheer me on.

Like the circles in this pattern, our lives overlap and expand one another in new directions.

It’s also true that The Fabric Folk wouldn’t exist in its current form without you ❤️

Our amazing volunteers help us keep hundreds of kilograms of textiles in circulation.

They also help keep me from going mad.

A massive shout out to Vicky, Aaron, Fanja, Libby, Marina , Alison, Becky, Betty Shirley, Miranda, Milly and Elle for your support over the past six months.

If you’d like to join us as a volunteer — sorting fabric, supporting workshops/public pop-ups, or contributing your professional skills — comment below or send us a DM.
