Last Monday, Beavers and Cubs of 1st Hertford Heath had a 'space race' evening.

Beavers made Paper rockets and then fired them from foot-powered air pumps.
Some worked like - well - rockets, others were a bit slow off the mark.
After a bit of tweaking, we managed to get them 'firing on all cylinders' and we ended-up with a competition to see who's went the highest and furthest.
Several of the rockets got taken home, the rest have been 'recycled'. With all the squeals and shouting, I'm sure our neighbours were wandering what was happening.

Our Cubs went bigger!
We made rocket bodies out of soda bottles and blunted pencil legs.
We then went over the local playing field and split into 2 groups, One used water-filled rockets and bike pumps to power their machines. The others used Vinegar and a delayed fuse made from Bicarbonate of Soda and paper tissue, so we could get a safe distance! We then swapped around, so all did both activities.

Again, the noise when the rockets went off was louder than the rockets themselves. A great evening, and sorry for the parents for keeping you waiting, we were a few minutes late back!

A massive thanks to those parents who signed-up to the rota and helped-us out - We CANT do these activities without your help,

A few weeks ago a strong contingent of our Beavers and Cubs took part in the Annual Hertford District Scouts St. Georges Day parade.

We met at Hartham Common, then formed into Parade order with flags fluttering. We set-off, marching behind our friendly dragon, along The Folly, through to the town centre and into the Castle Grounds.

It was great to see so many people coming out of their houses to wave and cheer us all.

On arriving at The castle Grounds, all our flags were put on display and we had some entertainment, followed by the renewals of our promise.

A great thanks to all those who took part, especially our flag bearers, who did a sterling job.

If you know of anyone who would like to join our pack, please reach out to us. We are always interested to hear from potential new members, adult helpers, Trustee committee helpers, School Duke of Edinburgh volunteers or even prospective Leaders. Please message us and we would love to hear from you!

1st Hertford Heath Beavers and Cubs finished this term with an ‘Eggstravaganza ‘ of a meeting!

Beavers started their meeting with a scavenger hunt around the Hut. Images with an Easter theme were hidden and each had a letter on the back. Once they found them all, they found it spelt ‘Chocolate Egg’.
They then had a craft activity, where they made an Easter Bunny! Sticky fingers all round :-)
The evening ended-up with saying goodbye to several Beavers with them ‘swimming-up’ to Cubs next term.

Cubs started with a game while everyone arrived.
We then decorated Hard-boiled eggs, straight out of the hot water! They were placed onto card tubes and held with tissues to protect hands, then Wax crayons were used to melt patterns onto the surface of the eggs.
While these cooled, we went outside for an Egg hunt, with hollow plastic eggs filled with battery tea-lights!
Finally, we used some spare eggs to do a ‘rolling’ relay race – eggs were rolled along a variety of lengths of pipe / card along the length of the car-park – most survived, but, some shared the same fate of Humpty Dumpty!

For each section, we said goodbye and all went home with a cream egg or suitable milk / nut / egg-free alternative (despite how they sound, surprisingly yummy)!

If you know anyone who would like to join-us in the Scouting Adventure, young people or Adults too, we would love to hear from you. We always need people to assist us, whether as Leaders, occasional helpers or Trustees to help us maintain the Hut and grounds. Send us a message and we can let you know more

1st Hertford Heath Beavers finished this half term with a Winter Olympic themed evening.

We started the evening with a brief discussion into what the games were and why they are only held every 4 years.

We then split into groups and did some Winter Olympic games, including Curling (Coloured ice blocks slid on a white base to get to the target), Ice Hockey (trays of ice, pipe-cleaner goals with lolly-sticks to hit a Lego puck) and my favorite - Bobsleigh (Lego figures frozen into icecubes and raced down a Hotwheels track).

After this, we came back together to make and 'fly' Down-hill Skiers!

All in all, a great way to finish the half-term!

1st Hertford Heath Beavers and Cubs made the most of a gap in the weather last Monday to do some backwoods style cooking over fires outside.

Beavers mixed and cooked Dampers - a simple flour, sugar and water bread recipe. Unfortunately, they took so long to mix and make, there wasn't enough time to completely cook them, so they had to be taken home to be finished-off in the oven! We are looking forward to hearing how they tasted, once finished baking and then smothered in jam - how could they not be gorgeous.

Cubs was a bit different, they were cooking 'pitta pockets'. Lots of vegetables and other fillings were prepared by them.

We then split them into groups and while 1 group made their Pitta pockets and stuffed with fillings of their choice,. They were then wrapped in foil and placed on griddle-plates over a fire to cook.

The other group made Fire-starter tubes, from loo rolls filled with paper, twigs, straw and cotton wool with a dab of Vaseline.
They then went outside to practice lighting fires using sparks from 'flint and steel's' (well, technically Ferrite rods and steel, but hey, lets not be too picky).

The groups than swapped to ensure everyone got to make and cook their 'pitta pockets', then eat them (the best bit!).

A few had charred bits on the bottom, but the insides were great!

Everyone enjoyed the evening, with the only downside being Monday turned-out to be a 2 shower day! I had my normal shower in the morning, but having been around fires all night, I stunk and had to go straight into the shower again when I got home! The joys of Scouting :-)

Three of 1st Hertford Heath's Cubs were tasked, as part of their Team Leader Challenge, to come up with a pack meeting from scratch. It was their own choice what they were going to do and they took it very seriously.
They based their meeting around 'Animal Carers' badge and over the weeks leading up to Christmas they planned, met-up to discuss, practice and then finally run it past the Leaders to show it was suitable.

We didn't need to make any changes to the program, so, last Monday they collectively ran the meeting including the starting ceremony.

It started with an animal quiz to warm us all up. This was followed by an activity to find key facts about the Sloth - why Sloth . . . .why not!

The final part of this section of the meeting was to design a poster about Sloth's.

The evening ended-up with a close encounter with a trio of Guinea pigs from one of their schools.
Those running the evening got everyone to wash their hands and sit in a circle. They ensured everyone got a turn to hold and stroke them.
It quickly became apparent that each Guinea pig had different personalities. One in particular was greedy and ate so many green beans that, when he was picked-up, he 'did what animals do best' and produced a plethora of poo!
I can honestly say I have never seen Guinea pig poo before. Thankfully, much easier to clean-up than most other animals.
Those running the evening then got everyone to wash their hands because of handling animals!

After they ran the closing ceremony and dismissed the other Cubs, we had a short de-brief and then we pointed-out to them that they hadn't quite finished yet - they still had to clear away the pencils and paper from the activities - dohh!

Thanks to the 3 Cubs and their parents for supporting them in the planning of the meeting. Especially for 'borrowing' the Schools Guinea pigs, they were a great hit.

A slightly belated post, but in the weeks leading up to the end of term, we asked our Beavers and Cubs if they wanted to make Christmas Cakes this year (we tend to do offer it every other year).

The majority said yes, so we dug-out our Nut-free / Alcohol free cake recipe from previous years and we set-to it, stockpiling the ingredients like mad.

The first week they worked in small teams to mix together all the ingredients into a bowl. We took them home and the following day decanted the mix into 1lb card cake tins and cooked them - ohh, the house did smell Christmassy!

The following week, they were marzipan and decorated - it is amazing how many different colours you can make from a few coloured icing blocks - even if you didn't want to!

At the end of the evening, the cakes were wrapped and taken home - some to be eaten straight away, others to be kept for the big day!

Great thanks goes to those parents who popped-in and helped with the mixing and decorating - it made it much easier and more successful!

1st Hertford Heath Scout Group ended their term with a Hawaiian Luau Beach Party - something suggested by Cubs at a recent pack Forum.

All entered the main Hall via an impressive Beachball arch and were presented with a flower Lei.
Once in the room they were confronted by 3 Zones, a Beach Zone for making sandcastles, a Games Zone, with Flamingo ring toss, a Limbo competition and Houla-hoop spinning and the last - my personal favourite - was the Mocktail zone, a table-top beach-hut where there were 3 different Mocktails to choose from and make - Sunrise, Passion fruit Martini and a Blue Lagoon!

After all of the activities were completed, the Beavers ended their party with a light snack of tropical fruits and crisps.

The Cubs had a few additional activities. They started the party with our spin on Beach Volleyball, using a beachball. They then did the 3 Zones , but they still had an activity to do before they could have their snack - a Hawaiian Houla Dancing lesson!
Most gave it a good go, with various results (the worst being some of the Leaders! - me included)

I must give a big shout-out to those parents who helped us, the Leaders - without their assistance, we wouldn't have been able to do all of the activities we had planned. Thanks very much!

This has ended a really busy few months. Hopefully, I will be able to do some catch-up posts.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining us - young people or Adults - we would love to hear from you.

On Monday 17th November, after a very wet few days, we took advantage of the dry night to run most of our meeting outside.
It was a bitterly cold and clear night, so, wrapped-up warm, we went outside to do a range of Glow-stick related activities.

There was a Corn-hole board with an illuminated hole and lights around it, glow-stick noughts and crosses on a glow-stick board and bowling with , yes, you guessed it, glowsticks in plastic bottles.

After all had taken turns with these activities, we then had foam LED glow-wands and used them to make shapes (and in some cases, write words) in the air.

The Cubs meeting was rounded-off with an investiture to remember - a flag lined with glow-sticks and the Promise made by torch-light!

Beavers, Cubs and Leaders from 1st Hertford Heath Scout Group were proud to be asked to attended the village Remembrance Service again this year.

We performed a guard of honour for those entering the church before the service, then marched our flags down the aisle, where they were placed either side of the Alter for the duration of the service, along with our wreath.
At the end of the service, we paraded our Section Colours down to the War Memorial, where several others who couldn't make the church service also joined us for the Act of Remembrance at 11am.

A great thanks to all those who attended - we are extremely proud to play an active part in this, and many other village events. If you know of a young person who would like to join us, or an Adult who wants to help (as Leader, Committee member, occasional helper or just have a hobby or skill they would like to pass-on to us), please reach out to us, we would love to hear from you.
