People United Arts charity using creativity to explore radical kindness. Currently collectively imagining new ways of caring

08/10/2026

Mandy and Becky spent their time practicing care and creativity at Hut 38...

During their residency, they were exploring self-care. That meant reflecting, sea gazing and experimenting; a playful practice, which lead to cyanotype prints, collaging with sublimination inks and cups of tea.

Our Hut 38 residency is open until 28 October. We have a few spots still available. So apply now and use this space and time to explore your creativity, care or a community-focused idea.

Thank you to Mandy Quy-verlander and Becky Vincer

Meet SJ!

SJ is an American artist and illustrator who found home in Margate. They create through a lived experience lens of q***rness and disability. When not creating, they’re face first in the sea, cuddling their elderly cat or hanging out with their wife.

⭐️ Zine Maker Spotlight ⭐️

Meet Elmer!

Elmer Dove Gleeson is a non-binary le***an creative, self-desribed as an ”illustrator and poetic dyke”. They currently reside on the Isle of Sheppey, and make the majority of their art digitally.

As part of Q***r Coastal Zines, their zine explores their early childhood:

“I was raised by a single mother on the poverty line, so most of our ‘days out’ as such were spent by the beach!

It was free to spend hours sprinting over stones and screaming over seaweed, and I feel it definitely had an impact on how I see the world now regarding my love of nature above pretty much all else.

Part of the zine is focused on how it felt to have to leave those carefree days behind and enter the school system, which is known to be inherently traumatic for autistic children. This combined with the homophobic and transphobic atmosphere that was the 2000’s/early 2010’s made for a very isolating and degrading time for young q***r me. However, in the great words of Leslie Feinberg - ‘Nature held me close and seemed to find no fault with me’.

The sea was a great comfort and still is now. Nature, specifically the beach and ocean, has potential to be one of the greatest gender neutral spaces of our society and I think we should all spend more time there.”

Hut 38 is officially finished!

We’ve added the last finishing touches on it. It took a whole team of us to get the last shelf up, coat of paint on and nail in the wall. A huge thank you to everyone who helped us set it up.

Thank you to for your expert carpentry. Thank you to for the beautiful mural highlighting our local nature. Thank you to our core residents, , for the adding life to the space. Thank you to for supplying our delicious paint.

We’re celebrating 20 years of People United. We’ve seen a lot of changes but this year, we revisit one of our very earliest projects - our beach hut along Herne Bay. Formerly Hut 136. Now Hut 38.

As we reboot the project that rooted us in Herne Bay all those years ago, we look forward to welcoming more of you to enjoy the space this Summer.

You can still apply to be a Hut 38 resident this Summer/Autumn. If you want to be resident in August, apply by 12:00 Monday 20 July. Link in bio!
