"But someone will say, ' If we once recognize that we are all equally wrong, all political action will instantly be paralyzed. We can only act when we assume that we are in the right.' On the contrary, I believe that the basis for valid political action can only be the recognition that the true solution to our problems is not accessible to any one isolated party or nation but that all must arrive at it by working together."

-Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation, pp. 116-17

Dear Friends,

June at the Metta Center is dedicated to the study of ‘constructive program,’ a feature of nonviolence that emphasizes solutions building as part of the larger strategy for a nonviolent future. We are happy to invite you to join us for an event this Thursday with our friend Rivera Sun. See all the info for joining below, and see you there!

Nonviolent Solutions & Constructive Programs: Building the Future Together

THURSDAY JUNE 18, 2026

10 AM PACIFIC TIME

Nonviolent solutions and constructive programs are "means that are ends in the making". There are hundreds of ways to stop, prevent, and end violence and systemic harm. From interrupting street fights to ending wars, these nonviolent solutions are everywhere. They include restorative justice, community safety initiatives, conflict resolution in schools, living wages, universal basic income, affordable housing, debt abolition, reparations, renewable energy, nonviolent struggle, civilian-based defense, and so much more.

While some require large institutions to take action, many are accessible by people in their daily lives. Active bystander trainings teach people to intervene in harassment and bullying. Conflict resolution skills give everyone the ability to resolve disputes without violence. Economic solutions like mutual aid, savings circles, swap networks, little free fridges, and tool libraries put the power to transform poverty into our hands. Ecological efforts like native plants, rewilding, vegetarianism, local and small scale solar, composting, ride shares, and more offer ways for people to protect the earth. Each of these, practices by thousands or millions of people, becomes a form of Gandhian constructive program that can help social movements succeed at challenging the violence, harm, and destruction in our world.

Rivera Sun will introduce nonviolent solutions and facilitate a discussion on the connections between these efforts and constructive program. Rivera is the program coordinator for Pace e Bene, a 37-year-old nonviolence organization that has dubbed 2026 "The Year of Nonviolent Solutions.”

Just a reminder. We don't need a world with trillionaires.

We need a world where everyone has enough.

A world where children don't go hungry.
Where everyone has a safe place to call home.
Where people can access healthcare, education, and opportunity.
Where prosperity is measured not by the wealth of a few, but by the well-being of all.

A compassionate future that works for everyone.

The group will have a presence on Hylo - here's the link~https://www.hylo.com/groups/action-for-happiness

What is Hylo you ask~ Hylo is created for peer-to-peer, networked collaboration.
The transition to a world that works for all will require unprecedented collaboration—and powerful tools designed specifically to support that work. For-profit, venture capital-backed platforms are not up to the task, as they:

Are profit driven—not relationship driven. The big social platforms are designed to extract your attention and data, turning you into the product for sale.

Are built for individual companies and brands—not for peer-to-peer collaboration. These platforms have no ability to create conversations that unite multiple groups in a shared context.

Are increasingly adversarial. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are constantly tweaking their algorithms to keep us hooked with ever more outrageous content, while censoring activists working for positive change. It's not just distracting, it's unhealthy and overstimulating. Trying to organize for impact on platforms like that is counterproductive and just doesn't feel good.
