Henlow & Villages Community First Responders

Henlow & Villages Community First Responders We are the Community First Responders for Stotfold, Arlesey, Henlow, Shillington, Stondon, Clifton, Shefford and Meppershall and surrounding areas.

Serving Stotfold, Arlesey, Henlow, Clifton, Shefford, Shillington and surrounding areas. Thank you for looking at our page for the Henlow Community First Responders group. Community First Responders are professional volunteers across the East of England who attend life threatening 999 calls in their local area. They are often first on scene prior to the ambulances arrival and able to prov

ide vital life-saving care until the ambulance crews arrive. We have created this page to raise vital donations from generous people like you. Not only do our remarkable volunteers give up their free time to attend life threatening 999 calls, but they also dedicate time to their community to arrange CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) awareness training, hold recruitment events, community education talks and fundraising endeavours – all to continuously raise scheme awareness and to keep the group active in providing vital emergency support in the local community. As the East of England Ambulance Service Charity, we rely heavily on donations to support volunteers, staff, patients, and the local communities within the East of England in ways above and beyond that which NHS funding can ordinarily provide. Together, we make a difference to support those who help us most in our time of medical need. Today we would like to tell you how you can help your local community by donating to your community first responders (CFR). These incredible volunteers give up their time to support others 24/7 365 days a year and here’s why your donation today could really make a difference.

• Your support may help fund CFR enhanced training and additional medical support equipment for the volunteers including more kit bags, specialised NMA phones (used to allocate, give information to, and map the volunteers to 999 calls) and additional volunteer uniform.

• Funding could help us to recruit more volunteers through awareness days and at events which in turn will help provide more local cover for 999 medical emergency calls within your area.

• Donations may enable us to deliver free public awareness training to their communities through the EEAST Heart scheme, which teaches the public essential life-saving skills (CPR and AED usage) so we can respond quickly and appropriately in an emergency.

• Funds may provide realistic training aids to prepare the professional volunteers for real life-scenarios, our volunteers are given as much information as the person who calls 999 can provide, but they never really know what emergency situation they are walking into until they are on scene. Practicing for lots of different scenarios helps make our amazing volunteers the professional community responder volunteers that support your area today. Your donation will make a real difference to our NHS heroes, without support like yours these initiatives would not be possible. We already have 3 more events scheduled and are in the planning phase for several more. If you would like us to come to your community group please get in touch.

The first 4 months of 2026 have been very busy for the 4 volunteers of the CFR team.

From January to the end of April, Paul, Laura, John and Andrew attended over 120 incidents in our villages at the request of the Ambulance control room. And because we live in the community and respond from home we arrived before the ambulance on over 100 of those calls, providing medical assistance and reassurance in the vital first few minutes of an emergency.

The map shows our most common call out locations but when requested we have also attended calls as far out as Biggleswade, Letchworth, Hitchin and Luton.

Its been another busy month for the volunteers from Henlow and villages community first responders.

Through March we were dispatched to 30 emergency incidents in our villages by the Ambulance control room. 13 of these were the most serious Category 1 calls where life is at immediate risk. This month these included 2 Cardiac arrests as well as calls involving strokes, allergic reactions and collapses.

Because we respond from home, in our own cars and have excellent local knowledge of the area, we normally get to the scene well before an ambulance. This allows us to start providing emergency care where needed and provide reassurance to both the patient and the family until the arrival of an ambulance.

This month we were first trained resource to arrive on scene at over 90 % of incidents we were dispatched to.

We currently have 4 members of the team - Paul in Stotfold, Laura in Arlesey, Andrew in Meppershall and John in Shillington and we are expecting to add a couple of new members to the team later this year. However the Ambulance service only provide us with 1 fully funded response kit which limits the amount of hours we can provide on call. We are currently borrowing a response kit from an neighbouring group to boost our coverage and are actively fundraising to purchase another kit.

To help us help you please consider donating via the link below. All funds raised go directly to the East of England Ambulance Service Charity before being directed to your local group.

Please consider sharing our posts to any local groups you may follow and give us a like ❤️

We hope you don't need us, but if you do call 999 for an ambulance, it could be us who gets to you first.

Could you do something amazing and potentially save a life?

Are you willing to help with a charitable donation?

Then look no further!

Henlow and villages Community First Responders rely on charitable donations to continue to offer a service to the local community given by our amazing volunteers.

We respond from home in our own vehicles to medical emergencies in all the villages along the A507 corridor from Stotfold to Clophill.

We are limited to the amount of hours and coverage we can provide because, whilst the ambulance service provide one entire kit, the rest we have to purchase and maintain through fundraising and donations.

Along with the kits that we require to respond with, there is the cost of training equipment for public CPR awareness sessions and other equipment that we could massively benefit from.

So please if you are looking to support a really worth while cause then follow the link below or alternatively contact us via messenger.

The team of community first responders had a busy February, attending more than 30 emergency calls across our villages, from Stotfold to Shillington, from Arlesey to Meppershall

10 of these were the highest priority Cat 1 calls where life is at immediate risk, including cardiac arrests, seizures and allergic reactions.

Paul, Laura, Andrew and John all responded to requests for help from the ambulance control room in their own time, in their own cars from home. Due to living within the community, they arrived first on scene at almost every incident, providing critical care and reassurance to patients and family prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

We are a registered charity and in order to expand the hours we can cover we rely on donations. If you would like to know more and possibly help us to help you follow the link below.

Did you know that the survival rate for out of hospital cardiac arrests in the UK is less than 10%?

But if a person with the knowledge and confidence to perform early CPR and use a defibrillator is nearby, this survival rate can be as high as 40%!

Yesterday, John and Andrew from the Henlow and villages community first responder group delivered an awareness session at the Henlow social and activities club giving 16 local residents just that knowledge and confidence on how to deal with a cardiac arrest.

That’s 16 more local people who might just save a life in your community.

We already have more sessions planned for local groups in Meppershall, Stotfold and Shillington.

If you would like one of our team to come to
your group and show you how to save a life, please get in touch.
