🐰 Big News for Rabbit Welfare! 🐰

We’re thrilled to announce that RSPCA (England & Wales) is officially supporting our campaign - calling for an end to “pat-a-pet” sessions & better living conditions at farm parks.

Dr Samantha Gaines, Head of Companion Animals at the RSPCA, says:

“We at the RSPCA love that people want to spend time around animals, look after them and learn more about them. But we are concerned about the ways in which rabbits and other animals are handled in some farm park environments by members of the public.

Repeated handling in noisy environments can be stressful for rabbits and other animals as being regularly picked up and restrained can be very threatening. And while we know those involved in these sessions have the very best of intentions, we feel The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund’s call for “pat-a-pet” sessions to stop is the best way forward for animal welfare; with efforts instead being made to facilitate farm park visitors to watch and enjoy animals from a respectful distance, while learning more about what makes bunnies such unique and fascinating animals.”

Together with the RSPCA, we’re urging farm parks to find kinder, more educational ways for visitors to appreciate these sensitive animals - without handling or distress.

The Reality of Rescue 💔

Rescue isn’t just a passion — it’s a calling. It’s something deep in your soul that refuses to let you look away, even when it breaks you a little more each time.

There are incredible highs — the moment a scared animal learns to trust again, the flop of a rabbit that once trembled in fear, the first binky from a bun who had forgotten what safety and space felt like. Those moments remind us why we do this. They’re our bright light in the darkness.

But there are also crushing lows. The ones that keep you awake at night. The heartbreak of not being able to save them all, of watching the ones you tried so hard for slip away. The ones that never got their chance at a happily ever after. The frustration of seeing so few hands helping, so little support, while the need and pressure just keeps growing.

It takes resilience to keep showing up. To open your heart over and over, knowing it might break again. To balance compassion with boundaries, empathy with strength. To carry on when it feels like no one sees the effort, the tears, or the sacrifices behind the scenes.

To our fellow rescuers, we see you, we feel you, we support you.

Rescue isn’t easy. It’s raw, emotional, and sometimes thankless. But for those of us who do it, it’s more than work — it’s purpose, an innate calling. A feeling that small things can add up and make a difference. It’s knowing that even if we can’t save them all, we can change everything for the ones we do.

And that’s what keeps us going. 🩷

Please don’t put your rabbits on their back 🚫

We’ve seen a rise in photos and videos showing rabbits lying on their backs with captions like “they love this!” - but the truth is, they don’t.

This position is called tonic immobility or “trancing.” It’s not cute or relaxing, it’s a fear response. If your rabbits choose to flop like that themselves, then that’s absolutely fine but when forced onto their back, rabbits may appear calm, but they’re actually frozen in panic, waiting for danger to pass.

🚫 Trancing is not safe. It causes high stress and spikes in heart rate.

🚫 It's not a natural or harmless way to calm your rabbit.

🚫 Repeated trancing can damage the bond of trust between you and your bunny.

Please be kind. Learn more and help us spread awareness: https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/trancing/
