Today, we’ve got our to raise awareness for the need for children’s palliative care all around world.

All over the world, there are children who rely upon vital lifelines that Children's Palliative Care provide, and at Helen & Douglas House in Oxford, it is no different. Whether it's you're a parent, sibling, grandparent or carer of a child with a life-limiting condition, having a local lifeline to rely upon for support and guidance makes the difference everyday, and in so many ways.

Last year, we received over £1.2 million in gifts from the estates of generous supporters who had remembered Helen & Douglas House in their Wills.

Every penny of this goes towards our shared goal – to provide a warm, homely place for children living with life-limiting and terminal conditions and their families, for years to come.

🧡 It's (5-11 October) and an opportunity to shine a spotlight on our hospice. This year's theme is: Don't leave hospice care to chance. With your support, we can be here for children, young people and families now and in the future.

As part of Hospice Care Week, we're sharing our film again, A Place You Didn't Expect: Helen & Douglas House. The film shows how Helen & Douglas House is so much more than people might expect. It's a place filled with play, friendship, specialist care, family support, laughter and precious everyday moments together.

In the film, Families who have received support from Helen & Douglas House speak honestly about their experiences and what finding our hospice meant to them. The film was made possible with thanks to the families we currently support and those who have previously used our services.

Whatever your reason for following or supporting us, we hope this film helps you better understand what the hospice means to the families we care for. If you know a family who may benefit from watching the film, please share it with them. We're here to support children, young people and families through some of life's most challenging times 🧡

Last month, our Medical Director, Dr Emily Harrop, and Kalie Griffiths, Specialist Palliative Care Midwife, travelled to Japan to share expertise and collaborate with colleagues delivering children's palliative care. The visit was made possible through former Helen & Douglas House volunteer and clinical fellow, Dr Kanako Takeda, whose ongoing connection with the hospice helped create this unique opportunity.

Dr Emily said "This trip was truly transformational. Like us, our Japanese colleagues are working tirelessly to improve care for children who need palliative support and for their families. A special thank you to Kanako for bringing this opportunity to life. I look forward to continuing these friendships and professional connections for years to come"

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of childhood cancer.

We know that many families are unsure about when hospice support is available, or whether it's right for them. In fact, it’s one of the most common questions we hear.

At Helen & Douglas House, support for children with cancer can begin much earlier than many people realise. Our specialist care is available alongside active treatment, providing practical, emotional and therapeutic support for children, young people and their families.

That's why we've created a brand-new Children with Cancer webpage, designed to help families understand the support available and answer some of the questions we're asked most.

By leaving a gift in your Will, you’ll be helping to fund vital care for children like Beatrice who passed away at the hospice in 2012.

For Beatrice’s mother Joanna, Helen & Douglas House was a vital lifeline at a turbulent time. Beatrice suffered catastrophic brain damage after an asthma attack and with her health getting worse, the hospice offered her family a safe haven at the hospice until she died.

Joanna has since chosen to leave a gift in her Will to the hospice, saying: “I have chosen to leave a gift in my Will for the inordinate care and caring, and the vital physical and emotional respite which Helen & Douglas House gave to Beatrice and our family for almost seven years.”

Our shop is temporarily closed as we undergo an exciting refit. We can't wait to reopen our doors and welcome our wonderful customers, donors and volunteers back into an even better space.

The Henley Regatta is underway and the competitors, their families et all are out on the town and they are popping into the shop to top up their wardrobe for the week.

The atmosphere is starting to buzz and the sun looks good to shine all the way through, so that revellers can enjoy balmy nights in their summer frocks and shirt sleeves.

All of this followed by the Henley festival commencing on tbe 8th July.

We have fabulous dresses and accessories in the shop, curtesy of very generous donors with great taste! Come and see!
