A woof and some oinks! These endearing photos are from a resident's recently donated 1930s family photo album.

Although they were taken in Cornwall, not Sussex, they deserve a showing and capture a nice slice of rural life!

Good evening from Henfield Museum. Tonight, I bring you a collection of 3 garments from a Henfield family of some repute. A family that was very influential in the early years of the Boy Scout movement. More on https://henfieldscouts.co.uk/history-of-1st-henfield/ The clothes (gingham jacket and trousers and velvet breeches) were worn by the child who would grow up to be Major A G Wade MC (1881 – 1967). They are a mixture of hand and machine stitch and skilfully made. The breeches are lined in cotton. There are some smart buttons on the cuffs of both trousers and a matching style of button is used to fasten the jacket.

Reminder! Coming up this Sat from 11-4PM, a grand total of 27(!) London mudlarks will be displaying the assorted treasures they've found in the mud of the Thames foreshore. This will be a rare chance to view - and in some cases handle - many centuries of history, discover some of the secrets and tales of the objects, as well as chat to the mudlarks themselves.

On the more local side, we'll be displaying for the first time an intriguing collection of recently metal-detected finds from the site of the old Pokerlee (aka Pockerlee) Farm, kindly donated to the museum by their finder. This old farm site - likely dating to the 13th or 14th century - was truncated by the arrival of the railway in the 1860s and went out of use by the early 20th century.

A few photos here from our previous mudlark event in 2024. The event is being hosted by the Friends of Henfield Museum and our thanks also go to all of the mudlarks making their way down from London!

Good evening from Henfield museum. Tonight, a look at the new costume display at the museum. It’s a bringing together of Smocks worn for agricultural work and some of the tools that were used for the jobs.
One smock is a fine exhibition piece. Beautifully decorated with the Staffordshire & Shropshire Gardener pattern. Never been worn for work.
There are two smocks from one family. One worn by Allen Davey c1832-1905, farm bailiff in Henfield and the smaller one in front of it was the property of his granddaughter.
Add in a black oiled garment, a lady’s work smock and a farm bonnet with smock like patterns and you have a great deal to examine. The tools are large, pointed and sharp, amongst them a pitchfork, a scythe and two-handed rip saws. All show how hard agricultural labour was.

Don't miss this rare chance to get 'hands on'!

The London Mudlarks are coming to Henfield with some of their best finds! If you missed their first visit in 2024 or are interested to see some of their new finds since then, please drop by.

Hosted by the Friends of Henfield Museum, this 'Hands on History' day will be at Henfield Hall on Saturday 2nd May from 11AM-4PM. The Mudlarks will be showing and talking about a staggering number of finds from the River Thames in the City of London.

With every find the following questions are attached: who, why, when and where - and it’s because of the huge amount of knowledge that the Mudlarks have attained, that they are able to provide answers to some of these questions - rarely can they answer all. We also hope to showcase some finds from local metal detectorists on the day, so keep an eye out for local finds too!

Any proceeds post-expenses will go to support the Friends of Henfield Museum.
